Handicapped Entrances

Okay I need to Rant!  I always drop my husband off in bad weather at the Handicapped Accessible Dialysis Entrance.  Invariably there is someone parked across the entrance blocking the ramp.  Today it was blocked by a bus and two cars.  Apparently if you don't have a handicapped or dialysis parking pass it is acceptable to block the entrance rather than walk from a parking space.  Today I had to back out of the lot and use the emergency entrance!  Needless to say I had words with security about this and they did take care of it.  Are people just getting more thoughtless or just clueless about other people's needs.  Sorry I had to rant but now I feel better!

I believe you are correct. Everybody thinks they are more important. I have a Handicap Parking Pass but I only use it when needed if I'm having a bad day, otherwise I leave those spaces available for someone who needs it.

I have been in a wheelchair for several years, and I have some stories I could tell you that would get your blood boiling. Some people are just very inconsiderate or do not think.

If I find one more shopping cart in the handicapped space in a parking lot I am going to boil over.  My hubby cannot get in and out of the car if a cart is in it! Or I cannot park in the space.  Please remember just because there are blue stripes on the pavement and a car is not going to park there, do not put the shopping cart in the area.

Also the people who use relatives handicapped parking passes because they're only "running" into the store. It makes it impossible for me to find another spot to get my husband's electric wheelchair out without the wider spot.

The thing that bothers me is I have a Handicapp Parking Pass (2, one for when I ride in my dad's truck one for when I ride in my mom's truck) and because i'm 28 (look 17) and have had the pass since I was 18, elder people always give me a mean look, and some will even go as far as to make comments, mean comments. They just assume I don't have the right to park there, without knowing my situation. At least ask if your wondering, don't just burst out mean things. My ankles are both fused together (from prednisone deteriorating my bones) and I can only walk so far without being in pain, and add on osteo-arthritis now and you get pain regardless if your walking or not.

Handicap parking spots are just that, for people with a handicap, doesn't mean they are reserved for the ELDERS.

I am to the point of confronting people who park in front of ramps and in spots without passes.  This will of course just flip my husband out.  I just too combative some days for him.  I don't know about the rest of you but I get tired of fighting for everything.

How about the people who see that large gap between handicap spaces - you know, the one where the wheelchair is supposed to travel - and they park in it!!! grrrr...

And whatever happened to common courtesy??? We can and do get through doors unassisted every day, but how about holding the door for the person behind you, particularly if they are in a wheelchair or otherwise inconvenienced. Rolando and I always travel together so it's less of an issue but it must be really difficult for those on their own.

Maybe it is because we live in small town USA but people are always offering us assistance with doors, getting out of cars, etc.  At the hospital where the dialysis unit is located staff and some visitors are always asking if I need help.  Sometimes these are the same people who park where they shouldn't.  Figure that one out.

Angela515, I agree with you. The older people around here anyway, seem to think that these spots are reserved for them. People have seen me dragging out the ramps to get the chair out and have actually made rude comments! My husband is 47 years and I guess in their eyes that doesn't qualify him to be able to use the spots.My hubby hasn't heard the comments and if he has, he's never, ever let on that he had.  I've never said anything back, I'm not a fighter but if something was ever said directly to my husband's face, that would be an entirely different story.

I've never said anything to anybody parked in a spot, what I did mean were the people that would pull into the spot then really and truly run into the store. I've never confronted anybody because I don't know their situation.  I just find a different place to go. I firmly believe that what goes around comes around. For those who don't really need the spots, they'll be faced with their own difficulties someday.

If a person has a handicap permit then it should not be questioned. Yuu are right you never know what is really the reason.     When someone parks in these spots and has no permit even if it is only one minute it is just not acceptable.

I get people that give me dirty looks and say things under their breath all the time when I am by myself, but when I have my husband who is blind they never say anything. The funny thing is he is super healthy he just can't see, and I am very sick but look normal.

I pulled up to a handicapped spot today with a car and two people sitting there talking and apparently waiting for a kid to come out of school so I pulled up behind them on an angle from the road and blew my horn..they moved quickly with a look of embarrassment with my big blue oval about even with there rear window. I love intimidating people with my Bronco hehe.

I have handicap plates, and more than once, I have gotten so frustrated that I parked my car at an angle behind a non-handicap car that was in a handicap space (being careful not to impede other traffic, of course).  Each time, I have come back to my car to find the illegal parkers stewing like crazy because they couldn't get out of "their spot" because of me.  I always suggest calling the police, but somehow, they never do.  I take my good old time getting underway.  (Note, I live in the Washington, DC metro area, and try to gauge carefully how far to push this - I don't have a death wish!  But sometimes, dammit, I've just had enough!)

my sis is soooooo nice she parks us in a non-handicapped spot if someone non-deserving is parked in the handicapped spot....that boils my blood i wish i had laser vision so that i can blow up their cars or better yet blow them up into smithereens...grrrrr!!!!!!!!  IS THIS BAD??? what do you think?

I have been in a wheelchair for several years, and I have some stories I could tell you that would get your blood boiling. Some people are just very inconsiderate or do not think.

I think more than just I would be interested in hearing the stories here.



Anyway, about Handicapped Entrances, my apartment building has a LOT of elderly and disabled people in itand the front doors do NOT have one of those handicapped push buttons to automatically open the door like my dialysis unit does. I was telling the apartment manager who is in charge of getting things for the building that she should get one as I have seen people in wheelchairs trying to open this heavy door which opens toward them and only after swiping a white card at the doors lock. How the heck does someone in a wheelchair open one of those doors toward themselves and get their chair through the door?? The apt manager said it was too expensive. I felt like yelling "BULL SHIT! My dialysis center put one in! It is relatively cheap and you could easily get the government to pay for it since this is a government subsidized building!" But she only gets what benefits her. It pisses me off because I know she has the resources to get that automatic door button system put in. I think it should be MANDITORY for all buildings where they claim to be there for the elderly and disabled. We have so many of those "Handi-Transit" busses always pulling up and dropping off people in wheelchairs and canes that live in the building.

people in general are clueless when it comes to handicapped accessibility. I have a 22 year old severely developmental son who is in a wheelchair. I've been dealing with this issue for 22 years. At one point we had the police sitting in our driveway watching for drivers who passed Kevin's school bus when pulled to the curb with the stop signs out. The then would follow the bus to school, it was so bad.

don't rely on center security, call the police, if they aren't on an emergency they will come., the fine is not only large there are points on your drivers license. One ticket and you won't have more problems

Here is a good one. In front of my son's school there is only one handicapped parking curbside spot. Usually I take it because i get there earlier than most people because i may have to go into the building periodically. So here we go..The handicapped spot is just behind the crosswalk and then there is a firelane from the crosswalk to the next crosswalk on the otherside of the street.( T intersection). Where do you think they park because now I take up the legal handi cap spot? They have enough room to fit in the firelane with 2 cars bumper to bumper blocking the two crosswalks and then to make it worse the double park half in to the road traffic lane. I have to back out of my stall to pull around them to leave. On top of this they leave the vehicle running and run into the school like that. Unbelievable.
