Following ER: Becoming an Organ Donor

by Shenikwa Stratford
February 15, 2007

(Toledo, OH) --- Could you donate an organ to a complete stranger?

Dusty Tyukody did.

Tyukody is not only a donor, she is also on the board of directors for the Alliance of Paired Donations, an organization that has a data base of healthy donors who are willing to provide organs to strangers. It's an organization hoping others will provide an organ for their sick loved one.

She says giving up an organ can be very safe. Tyukody lives a perfectly normal life with just one kidney. If you are still afraid to donate while you're living, you can sign up to be a donor after you die.

Your organs can save as many as eight people after you've passed, and the need is great. Upwards of 95,000 people are currently on the list for donations. Sixty people a day die waiting on the list.

It's easy to sign up. You can join Life Connection of Ohio and NBC24 at Westfield Franklin Park Mall this weekend, Feb. 17-18, during business hours to sign up to be an organ donor.
