Do you guys ever wake up in the middle of the night because it feels like a knife was driven into your calve? Well this happened to me like 5-6 times in the same leg. I could barely walk for the rest of the day it hurt so bad. I guess it's a muscle spasm or something, please help me jedi PD'ers or even you hemos. THANKS!

I hate those....  I only got calf cramps a few times... mine were in the big thigh muscle....  and seems like it would last for 10 min.....  I dont miss those....  I use to get those when I went in center and then at night....  I believe it was because I was too dehydrated....   When I use to take lasix  ( water pill ) I would get them nightly ....  I learned to lay completely straight and never   never been my knees...   I dont get cramps any more..  now that I am doing my own dialysis I am carefull not to take too much off.... no point in having those or low BP....  I have not had a cramp in well about two years now....  maybe try not to take too much water off... and keep those legs straight....LOL

Oh yes, veeeeeery painful! They don't happen as much now that I'm on dialysis but just recently I had one after dialysis and it came on super suddenly, OMG, they hurt so bad! It literally felt like someone was twisting my leg!

I sometimes get them during the night following hemodialysis (I'm on twilight). It happens when they take too much fluid off so I'm down below my "dry" weight.

(I've got my dry weight set to the level which just avoids cramps).

I also tend to cramp during dialysis if I have more than 3.3 liters to take off. It rather depends on the profile. The profile that suits me best is one that fluctuates up & down, with an overall trend down to the end of the session.

Buy a liter of Tonic Water at the Grocery store.  It is about 88 cents.  It contains Quinine which is a muscle relaxer.  Just drink a cup every night and see if that helps.  It does me. It does not taste very good, but who cares if it works for you.

They use to give dialysis people Quinine Tablets but they won't give them to us anymore.  They never said why, just that the FDA said it was only for malaria.
