A Little help towards dialysis understanding

NICK CALACOURAS

ICONIC indigenous musician Jimmy Little is starring in a new health campaign to encourage renal patients in communities to use a new "at home" dialysis treatment.

Mr Little, 73, said he was a survivor of kidney disease and wanted to pass on his experiences to other sufferers.

"You can live a long and healthy life," he said.

"Here I am in my mid-seventies."

Health Minister Kon Vatskalis said Mr Little was helpful in convincing patients to take up Peritoneal Dialysis - which can be performed in the community rather than Alice Springs or Darwin.

"He sat down with the indigenous people and told them about his situation, with music that they like and understand, and words that they like and understand," he said.

Mr Vatskalis said a lot of patients did not understand Peritoneal Dialysis and chose not to seek treatment.

"They don't understand it. They think it is invasive. But it's not. It gives you the freedom to move around," he said.

"What is important is people can be with their community."
