Pd Problem - hospital cost me $3000

So my tube twisted and was facing north.  Which means i couldn't drain.  So for three days i did no dialysis.  Finally went to hospital for operation to move tube into better placement.  I was prepped and given twilight drugs.  Next thing i know they say ok your done??  I was like wow great drugs i didn't even realize i was out.  (i wasn't out).  It seems the doc came in to move my tube into position.  But when he hit the xray the tube had fixed itself.  Great fine and dandy.  Doc steps out and the nurses asst's take off there masks.  We are all talking about how weird that was.  Then one of the nurses says Oppsie i forgot to put your patient connector on.  In short my tube had been left open while the nurses were chatting with me.  So they put a new adapter on still without wearing a mask. And they sent me down to recovery.  Ok stuff happens no big deal.

I get home that night im on the machine happy all is back to normal.  About 3AM Karen wakes me up saying she is soaking wet.  In a half sleep i asked her is she wet the bed jokingly.  She hits me and says she is serious the bed is soaking wet.  Then i feel it and wonder if i wet the bed??  I sit up in a PUDDLE  Well my patient connection was laying next to me not attached to anything.  It seems the nurse didn't screw it on tight enough and it unscrewed somehow.  This is/was a brand new temperpedic bed that cost $3000.  It is now ruined.

Lesson i learned.  Every now and again give my patient access a twist to make sure it is on tight.  Live and learn.....

Can you suck the fluid out of the bed? Is it ruined?

Yes we dried the bed out with fans and sucking up the fluid with towels.  But it doesn't hold up like it should.  it sags badly where all the fluid had been.  The one warranty issues that comes with the temperpedic beds states liquid damage will void the warranty.  And there was 2500ML of liquid spilled out.

That and its kinda gross cause the liquid that drained out had been in me...

Bummer! I had heard you can absorb the liquid and the mattress could be saved, but obviously in your case that's not going to work - so sorry!

So sorry to hear this. I can see your point about it being contaminated. Perhaps you can mention this to the hospital they may just not want any hint of a law suit for their employee mistake. ( Or have a lawyer call them)

Your case proves that a lot of cleaning steps are unnecessary for PD? The doctor and nurses should pay you at least $3000 to cover your new bed.

Aw man that totally blows. What did you do after you realized your bed was soaked? I mean since it was open like that you could get an infection.

I'm not going to take the time and or money needed to try and get money for the bed.  I'm sure it would turn into me against them and i don't have time for that junk.

it is as life is a live and learn experience for me.  Now i check the twist on part of the patient extension where it connects to the tube coming out of me.  I make sure it is twisted on tight.

As for infection i waited until the next day to call my PD nurse.  I figured if i called her at 3 in the morning she would send me to the ER.  Where i would sit and wait until she got there.  So i went in at 8AM when my clinic opens and they gave me +/- antibiotics just to be safe.  All cultures have come back clean. 

As for the cleaning process we go through i agree Jie it makes you wonder.  it is not like our fingers ever touch the connecting points.

Could you call your insurance agent and see if this is a claim that you could file?  Wouldn't hurt to ask.

I would have been well piss*d off, pardon the pun. My husband  wraps micro tape around the connection to stop this sort of thing happening. It came off once, but as luck had it he was in for a change of the end bit any way. he gets a change every 6 months and even the nurses put micro tape on it. Hope you get things sorted.

Do they make those rubber sheets for adults?  It wouldn't hurt to get one for your next bed!
