« on: May 22, 2010, 08:36:32 PM »

Ok    I think I have a UTI   or at least  some irritation.....   before CKD   I would drink  alot of water and cranberry juice...... but  now I am worried that if I do drink alot of that stuff I will become fluid over load......  I still produce urine but the out put is lower than my input right now...and if I increase   well   you guys know.......  what should I do.......  when people stop urinating can they get UTI......   and if they do how do they handle that......

UTI's are relatively easy to clear.

Just ask your favorite doctor for an antibiotic that is cleared through the kidneys and urinary system.  As it goes through, it will kill the bugs in there.

Of course, such an antibiotic will have to have its dose adjusted since you're an ESRD patient.  So you should get a powerful drug that will work even at a lower dose, like Levaquin or Cipro.

I had a UTI and it took only 2 days' worth of Levaquin to clear it.  Not enough time to build up in my body and cause problems.

If you already have a UTI, then antibiotics are the way to go, but I don't use them lightly. Cipro and Levaquin have black box warnings for tendon rupture (even after short courses) and of course, overuse of antibiotics has created all manner of drug resistant bacteria.

I've never been a big fan of cranberry juice, so I take cranberry tablets (I use Whole Foods organic). You obviously need to drink some water to make them effective, but I have found it's a quick way to prevent UTIs without the huge liquid volume. Cranberry can supposedly increase risk of kidney stones (don't know if that's an issue with you) but either way, best to consult your doctor. Good luck.

My regular Dr. says we get more UTI's than non kidney people because we do not urinate as much. He wants me to take 1/2 cup of cranberry juice a day. I hate cranberry juice, so, good idea, I will get the pills. I am lucky tho, since I have no symptoms at all when I have an UTI. Well, maybe not so lucky, since I only have the analysis done once every 3 months at this point.
