I read a few years ago that it was healthier to eat a Cos lettuce
rather than an Iceberg lettuce.
The article stated that an Iceberg lettuce has the ability of absorbing
many undesirable elements that can be found in the soil.

Apparently the Cos lettuce does not absorb such undesirable elements.
Also, because of the Iceberg’s hardiness it can grow almost anywhere.

Stated also, was the fact, that many people in districts
where the Iceberg lettuce is growing do not eat it for these reasons.

Now, I do not know whether this is true or not,
or if it was part of a campaign by the Cos-lettuce-growers?

I would therefore appreciate very much if anyone has heard such a story and is it true?

I have to say that the Iceberg lettuce is extremely popular
as Supermarket seem to stock it in large quantities & at a reasonable price
but  find I can’t find the Cos lettuce so easily.

Thank you, Kristina.

Another name for Cos lettuce is, I believe, Romaine lettuce which is what we eat.

The Iceberg lettuce I am referring to is like a ball tightly wrapped.

If anyone has any information about which lettuce is best to eat in ESRF I would be very grateful.

Thanks, Kristina.

According to my nifty neato AAKP nutrition counter, one cup of iceberg lettuce has 87 mg of potassium whereas cos has 162.  Iceberg=11mg phosphorus, cos 26.  In my mind, iceberg lettuce has no nutritional value whatsoever; I'm not sure why anyone bothered to invent it.  Surely it never grew naturally!  I'm going to stick with cos as long as it doesn't put me over my daily K and Phos limits.

Iceberg became popular because of it's remarkably long shelf life, and it's ease in growing.  Romaine has a much higher nutritional value, although some people prefer the taste of iceberg, which is considerably blander.  However, if the choice is serving iceberg because that is what your kids will eat, or serving no salad at all, then by all means, have iceberg! A low-nutrient veggie for dinner is better than no veggie at all. . .
