I need to get my broken teeth fixed, before they'll let me have a kidney transplant.  My dentist told me that my teeth are too far gone, and I need either dentures or implants.

Everybody I know says that dentures suck.  I really want implants.

But my oral surgeon refused to do implants with me, saying that implants are contraindicated for ESRD patients because high PTH can weaken the bone structure of the jaw.

Has anyone here gotten implants despite having ESRD?  Or did your dentists and oral surgeons tell you that implants are out?

I did not know that high levels of PTH can effect the bone in regards to inplants.....    I need to look into this....  I have dental inplants  and had them done in 2005........  Be sure to check out your dentist.....  be sure that he knows what he is doing..... cause my dentist   almost killed me......   seriously.......   and  This is why I lost my kidneys..... and why I am on Dialysis today....  after the lawsuit.... I find out that he learned how to put in dental inplants thru a seminar.....   and have only done a few people......  Yet his web page and advertisements were wonderfull and sold me...      I spent  20000.00 fixing  his misstakes.......
I love my inplants now  and the work wonderful....  and I can eat anything...... but  I don't want to loose them and high PTH may do that .... I am looking into that now......   and  I guess while I am at it  I better find out if they are affected my any medications associated with transplants   cause I will probably get one of those too in the future......
Seriously........   check out your dentist.......  He might not know what he is doing........

I was advised not to get implants because of weakened bone structure from years of prednisone.  I saw two dentists, both of whom felt that the chance of implants not being accepted adequately by the bone in my jaw was pretty high.  I have had a plate for my two front teeth since I knocked them out diving into a swimming pool when I was 8.

Both my dentist and my oral surgeon told me the same thing:  Secondary hyperparathyroidism (high PTH) is a contraindication for dental implants.

If my dentist is a jerk, then after practicing 35 years in the same location, he's fooled a whole lot of people in my town.

My PTH is well controlled too.  But my neph said that some of the damage caused to my bones by a couple of years of high PTH is irreversible.
