I Miss My

I miss my catheater.  It was a fast and painless connect and disconnect. Relatively maintenance free.  I could use both hands during treatment. My fistula, on the other hand required a surgery, then 4 more to try to fix problems associated with it, and the button holes are ugly, looking like infected bug bites.

Admittedly my Cath did eventually get infected and land me in the hospital where they had to remove, but by that time my fistula was ready to use.

I miss playing so much music. I used to practice play piano for hours everyday and practice percussion every weekday. Can't do that now. I am just happy that my lifes biggest passion wasn't sport or something. I still enjoy my music a lot, just not as much as I would like.

Sorry to hear JennyGiggle, that you can't play as much music as you would like.
May I please ask, if you don't mind, what concerns you most, is it that you feel a lack of strengths to practice,
or do you find it difficult to concentrate on reading the score like you used to,
and how does this work with playing from memory as supposed to playing from the score?
I would be very interested and grateful if you could let me know.
I am not on dialysis yet but in ESRF with a kidney function of 10%
and I find I haven't got the strength that I used to have and therefore my concentration
wavers a bit after a while and I agree, it is very frustrating.

Well kinda a mix off all that you mentioned plus a bit more.

I'm a music student, so its really taken an impact on my studies so much so that I hav dropped the practical and just doing academic now. Time is a big issue, I get really quite sore and achy quite quick when I practice. Concentration is a big problem, I got myself really upset a few weeks back when I couldn't learn a new piece, until my tutor reminded me that it probably wasn't my ability that was holding me back but my loss of focus. I've never really been able to play from memory, always relied on page-turners. I still enjoy it as much, music has always been my liberator, there is nothing better than getting lost in some music.

What do you play. I am a 1st study percussionist and I play a bit of Piano.

I am so sorry, Jenny, I do hope your concentration comes back soon.
I am afraid I don't have any answers.
I play a little piano, but I am only learning and I try to study the scores
but I have the same difficulty as yourself keeping the concentration,
I find reading scores extremely taxing sometimes and it requires all my attention.
I play a little on the recorder and harmonica, and like yourself
I loose myself in music and love to listen to all kinds of musical works
not only instrumental but also singing as well,

Sorry about the fistula problems. From what I've read, it will get better after a while. At least I hope it does for you.

Hope the fistula gets better for you soon, maybe you could cover up the buttonholes with a loose fitting sweatband like thing? There must be something available for that. I don't have a fistula yet but I'll have to look into it. I still use a chest wall catheter. So how long did you have the catheter before it became infected?

Yeah, I missed my PD catheter also when I had to go on hemo for 6 months.  It took me two weeks to stop automatically sliding my hand down my leg to move the catheter when I sat down to "go."  What I miss most of all is just plain walking.  I have arthritis in my lower back and both knees, and just plain walking is a real challenge.  I've started looking longingly at scooters!  I will, however, never give up until I am crawling over broken glass in order to keep mobile without accompaniment!!!!!  Never give up; never surrender.

        I missing being able to go backpacking and camping.  Sleeping outside in a tent for the weekend or a few days.

yeah tell me about it,i see patients with a swollen fistula{like really swollen fistula}and it freaks me out.i used to draw at my treatment and since i had surgery at my left arm they couldnt use it for the fistula so they put it on my right arm.i had to learn how to draw with my left arm which now it's almost natural.but pray to God and have faith.
