ABO Transplantation

Hello all,

Yesterday I had a meeting with my doctors to discuss about transplantation. Basically I'm O blood group and both of my parents are B. The doctors suggest that there is a new technology called ABO incompatiable transplant, which is where a person with blood group A or B could donate a kidney to O. This MUST be a living donor and not a dead person. My doctors also said that living donor is more effective than dead as well. 

I would love your opinion and views on this matter because it could give me hope to get a transplant later this summer.



P.s I'm going to Adult dialysis soon i miss children dialysis a lot, the nurses and other patient here are like my family. It has been 3 years since i come from Hong Kong to London for dialysis and long term stay.

Can anyone advice me on adult dialysis since it would be a new environment for me.

Generally live donation is better for the recipient if for no other reason than because the quality of the dnoated kidney can be thoroughly assessed.

For ABO incompatible transplants, the recipient, you, would need to go through preparation beforehand to strip your blood of the antibodies that would cause rejection. This process, plasmapheresis, is becoming more and more commonplace and is similar to a dialysis treatment.

Sorry you have to leave your children's dialysis for adult dialysis. That is one of the down sides of growing up!

Hey Matthew! I went to an adult unit, because I moved. Like I told you on facebook. I think they're actually nicer there, than at the Children's hospital I went to. And since I have my own tv, and there isn't a 2 year old crying all the time, I like it alot better. I hope everything works out for you at your new center! Be sure to tell me how it goes!
