But I am addicted to Ice Breakers sugar free mints. I chew on them constantly. My hubby is worried that they have something in them that would be bad for me, like phosphorus, but so far I haven't heard my nurse or dietitian say that I can't have them. That still doesn't satisfy the hubby. Does anyone know anything about them? My mom said my addiction to them might have to do with dry mouth.

I once went through such a phase, I always had a dry mouth and was eating mints.
I was later diagnosed with Sicca Syndrome & Sjoegren's Syndrome, which makes the eyes and mouth very dry.
When my mouth stopped being so dry, I stopped eating the mints and that was that.
Having said this I must say that I never have been on dialysis and when I had this dry-mouth-phase I was not in ESRF either.
As a suggestion you could contact the manufacturers and tell them your medical condition and ask them what they would advise.
This tactic has been helpful to me on another matter.
Good luck from Kristina.

The only thing that I would caution about is that most artificial sweeteners are not renal friendly.
Check to see which sweetener is used and do research on it.
Best wishes,

I never liked mint candy until I started dialysis. I now will buy those 6# bags of Starlights from Walmart and chomp on about 10-20 of them an hour! Do you also love crunching ice? I think it is related to what they call Pica that us pt's get.

I started sucking on tic tacs. But for me it was because my cath was really sensitive and I could taste the saline flushes and citrate. The tic tacs were actually one of my nurses ideas as something small that packs a punch. I can't see the ice breaker mints being that much different.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I like the Ice Breaker mints that are "sour". That will make your mouth water and stay hydrated for a while!

I have really bad dry mouth. I think it is from the Colondine I take. I was heavy on Altoids Cinnamon mints. I ate them so much I developed an allergeric reaction to cinnamon. NO more mints for me.
No I am addicted to ice.

I agree with Aleta....artificial sweeteners can be very bad for you. Do not rely on the company who makes the product to give you information on why they are bad for you. A little research on the internet will yield lots of info. Look on the label to see the contents and research it.
