Bob Dillingham donated a kidney on Tuesday at Christ Hospital to Mendol Eaton. Eaton has been waiting for years for a suitable donor. The two men met for the first time on Thursday.
Dillingham says the procedure was chance to give back. His wife received a kidney five and a half years ago. Dillingham wanted to donate, but wasn't a match. His wife ended up getting a kidney from her brother.
But the donation had a profound effect on Dillingham. After years of debating whether to become a donor for someone else, Dillingham placed himself on the donor list in June.
Eaton is amazed at Dillingham's generosity. "He's such a courageous man to be able to donate a kidney or an organ to anybody he doesn't know and it's helped me out so much."
Dillingham's wife says, "I think he's a hero. It's the greatest thing a person can do. I thought it was a great idea. Never once did I hesitate."
Dillingham told Local 12, "I never had a better feeling in my life. It wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be."
Dillingham hopes others will consider becoming organ donors
