I'm on 50 mg of metoprolol a day and my bp is 165/112 tonight. I have a headache. I told my neph the other day my bp is high and he said maybe we need to lower the dry weight. Blech. I don't think I've too much fluid, nothing is swollen like my hands or ankles. I hardly drink any fluid either.

So do you think I need more bp meds or take more fluid off or both? What meds/dosages do those of you on hemo take? When I was on PD my bp was fine with just this bp med but I don't htink it's enough on hemo.

You could try and "challenge" your dry weight.  If your dry weight is at 75.0 then try going down to 74.5 and if you do ok then try 74.0 etc.  Tonic water will help with cramps if you drink some before you go to dialysis.  It has Quinine in it and that is a mussel relaxer.

I'm on Diovan 160mg as needed.  When my bp is high I pop a pill.  I usually don't take any on dialysis days because I dialyze in the morning and so my BP is under control that day.  Some days I take one in the morning and at night.  I can hear it rushing in my ears when it is high.

One thing for sure you can't keep having high BP like you are having.  You need to try something to get that under control.

I'm on 3 meds - 100mg of metoprolol, 100mg of cozaar and 60mg of nifedipine - which is a lot, but it took years to find the right combo that worked for me.  I also had to take minoxodil (the same stuff that is in Rogaine!) for a year or so, but thankfully I was able to stop that!

I would do as the Dr. says first, try lowering the dry weight, if it isn't possible then try new or more medication.  Good luck!

I'm on Verapamil, Cozaar and Clonidine, and like you my BP is higher than it should be.  Interestingly, my doc told me Friday that as long as you are fluid overloaded (and I was that day), your BP meds won't actually work.  How dumb is that?

Getting the heck out of town.

Time to chime in and I so hate to brag (not) but I was taken off 5 bp meds a month after starting dialysis along with Liptor (cholesterol) and zemplar (vitamin D supp).  To the internist next week and expect to have insulin reduced or perhaps ommitted.  Dialysis is costing insurance out the Wazoo but it sure is saving me lots of money here.  Oh yea, I get no meds through the machine (or whatever) either or than the blood thinner and iron 5 times.  See why I'm happy with dialysis?  Now if I could just get buttonholes or a zipper or something.

Hi I am on lisinopril, procardia er, and catpress.  I know what you mean  I was complain ing about headaches, and they kept going for lower wt. I am a nurse (er and icu) for 25 years, I know that my body couldn't handle pressure above 150.  I kept calling the docs. to tell them about the pressure but they would not give me anything like procardia 10 mg to use as needed.   after 2 small strokes they finally listened to me and gave me the procardia. wonderful drug. it will bring down the pressure fast.  now wen I start getting a headache i check the pressure and pop a pill if needed.  don't let the pressure get to high or you might have a stroke. also cut back your salt intake and cut your fluids some.  I am new to the whole dialysis thing but the fluids and salt intake will keep your bp up since your kidney function is down

I take 50 mg hydralazyne 2x/day and 100 mg metoprolol 2x/day. They cut off my lasix & diovan since starting dialysis. Some days I don't need any of them.

I was off BP meds for about 18 months as dialysis took me quite low. Recently though my BP has been raised a bit to like 150/90 levels, so I'm back on Coversyl (Prendupril I think that's the spelling) 2.5mg/day. Yesterday I checked my BP and it was 117/75. Very happy with that :)

I'm on ExForge  10 mg/ 160 mg....which is actually a combination of 10 mg of Norvasc & 160 mg of Diovan in One Pill.    I also take 80 mg of Furosemide.  I do not notice any side affects from my BP meds.
