Over here it is cheaper to follow a renal diet rather than a normal healthy diet. Now Im not on the renal diet we are spending alot more on food. I also eat a hell of alot more now too.
How so? Mac & Cheese and cans of Pork n Beans is a lot cheaper than yolk-free noodles and DairyDeliciousŪ in my opinion..

Could it be the fact that your eating more, as to why our food bill is higher?  Seems like a pretty uncanny coincidence to me.  :P  j/k

But seriously, I would think that specialized foods would cost more then every day generic foods

You dont need to buy "special" foods on the renal diet. You are just limited in what you can buy. Fruit and vegetables are expensive here, which I didnt buy much of when I was on the renal diet because of my potassium levels. Now I can eat normally I buy lots of fruit and veges, well what I can afford. I agree there is a difference now Im eating alot more. When I was on the RD, I would do the shopping and buy pretty much nothing for myself, most of it was for OH (my other half). I was pretty much too scared to eat, so I just didnt buy much for myself. I ate mostly sandwhiches and toast when I felt up to it. Not very healthy I know.

I remember when I had to strictly follow the feingold diet for the first 16 years of my life and I had to read every label of every food product for specific ingredients.  Amazingly similar to what Angie does now while shopping for food, only she is looking for different ingredients.  In most cases, the foods I had to buy, cost more then what a generic equivalent would cost.

I have found with the foods I like .. that it is cheaper to not be on the renal diet but I guess it all depends on what your tastes are.

Are you getting your 1.2 grams of protein per kg of weight per day?

Dialysis patients have a high incidence of malnutrition, with decreased nutrient intake as the main cause.

Here is an interesting article from the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP):

I keep track of everything I eat with a program on my computer.  Gives me exactly how much protein, sodium, phosphorus, and potassium plus several other things I take in each day.

Fitday.com has something similar online that can be used for free.

Supposedly they can send a FREE CD to CANADA (not just the States) but I have learned it can ONLY be sent to the States simply cuz the webmaster made a mistake and only has states as an option and no provinces :(

So I am getting my free CD sent to Sandman and he can just bring it to me   ::)

**okay I emailed the owner and they are fixing that so that Canadians can order as well ;) :2thumbsup;
