So I went online and looked up Compazine which my doc prescribed for my nausea due to the Sensipar.. Well I am not sure I feel very safe taking it due to the HUGE amount of side effects that it can cause. I don't like a medicine that can cause permanent facial and body spasms! Why give such an extreme drug for nausea? I wasn't expecting that. Have any of you been given Compazine for nausea? Thx.

But i have noticed that many new drugs have side effcts that are far worse the the effect you are trying to get rid off.  be it a cold or muscle soreness ect ect.
it seems if they put warnings on the medicine bottles that they can sell us arsenic and get away with it.

I hope you fnd something to take that you feel comfortbale with.
Call a pharmacist and see what they may offer you overt the counter.?

Compazine has been around for more then 30 years and used frequently in the critical care setting and also in pediatrics using suppositories for nausea/vomiting. I have never had any issue with administration. I think sometimes we read more into the side effects which can be scary if you dont have the experience to go with it. They are required to put any and all possible side effects for informed consent. Another good medication our Nephrologist uses is Reglan which also has been around for a very long time. Both are very good medications for control of nausea/vomiting with compazine being the stronger of the two. We use Phenegran alot in the clinical setting and it also can be given in an oral form. Talk with your Nephrologist and find which seems to work the best for you as an individual.

I take Reglan/phenergan for my nausea and vomiting, and that's what the hospital (every hospital I've ever been to in fact) has given me. It seems like more drugs nowadays have more side effects because the FDA now requires all possible side effects be disclosed. It didn't use to be like that. In fact, years ago, they didn't have to disclose any of them. And the spasms aren't that an uncommon side effect of a medication. The phenergan can cause restless legs, which is somewhat like mild muscle spasms.

We hae experience with compazine. It is very effective against nausea and vomiting. The only side effect (if you want to call it that) that we experienced was that it kicked Ro's butt - he'd sleep all day after a single dose. He now uses Phenergan.

Thanks everyone for the input I appreciate it! Well I think I am going to at least try the Compazine. I am supposed to take half a pill, so that should be okay I hope. I guess I read a lot into the side effects.

I've only had to take anti-nausea meds short-term, but I had just the opposite experience of Rolando. Phenergan knocked me out, and I couldn't be woken up, but I have not had any problems with Compazine. Just research everything, realize that you won't get all the side effects listed, you may not get any, but you need to be comfortable with the decision made.

Oh, phenergan knocks me out, but if I take half a pill, it takes the edge off the nausea and I can function. Most anti-nausea meds make you drowsy

I was put on compazine about 13 years ago when I had double pneumonia.  I keep getting strange muscle spasms in the face and lower back.  Finally ended up in a full seizure.  I was conscious but every muscle had seized and boy did it hurt and scary to-boot.  I was one of the lucky 1/2 of 1% who ends up w/this complication.  Our hospital now does not use this medication on anyone anymore for this exact reason - there are many others to pick from.  And after I got some anti-seizure medications, my muscles sure were "stiff" (like after a super heavy workout).

BTW, other than the lungs, I was a totally healthy 47 year old - so just a freak thing.

Compazine is very often used in Chemo patients.  Usually a pretty big gun for dialysis patients.  Compazine is used more to stop vomiting once it is occurring, and Phenergan is used more to keep the nausea from turning into full fledged vomiting.  Both will make you drowsy, and both have side effects.  You may or may not get any of the side effects.  Reglan is taken after each meal, and at bedtime, to prevent nuasea and vomiting.  It's a good drug, although not taken just as you may need it, like Phenergan and Compazine are taken PRN.
