Before Joe went on dialysis and they told him to decrease his protein, we tried to increase carbs like rice and noodles and really increase vegetables. We tried substituting vegetables instead of meat whenever possible. For example, when I made spaghetti, instead of using a whole lot of ground beef, I used just a little for taste and cut up 2 big onions and a big basket of mushrooms and sauteed those. It tasted just as good, or even better, as the regular way. I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing you're looking for or not.
Also if there's a lot of protein in your urine it looks foamy. Sorry if TMI. Hope that helps.

Sara: I have never heard of "seeing" protine in your urine. What is "TMI"
Angel, it sounds like you better start from square one: What are high Protine Foods? And avoid them. Also you could use portion control.
Chicken has a lot of protine, so only have a little bit instead of a whole breast.
Your kidneys are supposed to filter out toxins and fluid and produce urine, and leave protine in your blood stream. If there is protine in your urine then your kidneys are realising it when they are not supposed to. This shows some disfunction of your kidney. This does NOT mean dialysis. My grandmother had protine in her urine her whole life and died at 83 with heart failure.
WORRY and STRESS will increase your blood pressure and that will damage your kidneys worse than eating a little protine. Stop Worrying and go see that urologist.

That is so true all im doing is worrying and raiseing my blood pressure and im borrowing trouble to and i sure dont need that at all.

Well it's not like you are able to see little protein particles (as far as I know) but foamy urine indicates protein. This is what the nephrologist told us.
TMI = Too Much Information.
-
Yes if one has kidney problems foamy urine is a sign of protein being present.
As to lowering protein. Did they tell you how many grams of protein that you can have?
-
Have you not spoken to your dietitian. They can sometime help with information on low protein foods. Plus you should know how many grammes of protein you are allowed in a day.

I just did a search (and I will most likely add to this):
- Low Protein Diet Information (http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/3265/lowp.html)for People with Kidney Disease
- The Nephron Information Center - Low Protein (http://www.nephron.com/lowpro.html)
- News Release (http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/press/1996/AUGUST/19965.HTM) that says LOW-PROTEIN DIET MAY REVERSE KIDNEY DISEASE
- LOW PROTEIN DIET (http://www.healthtouch.com/bin/EContent_HT/cnoteShowLfts.asp?fname=02034&title=LOW+PROTEIN+DIET+&cid=HTHLTH)

Do you have documented proof of this?
How big of a deal is it if you have protein in your urine? What does that mean?
-
Protine is supposed to stay in your blood stream. If it is found in your urine, either your kidney is a little bit disfunctional, or you are an extreme athlete, or you are pregnant. Those are also common. Athletes burn a lot of protine when they work out and I guess their "good" kidney decides when enough is enough and throws some out. Pregnant women often are found to have protine in their urine and once they give birth it goes away.

Reason for my asking is because when I was a teen, I use to have a lot of foam in my urine but I was also very athletic then to. But I haven't seen much of any foam in over 20 years. But every once in a blue, I do get a little. Is that a bad thing?
-
It is probably too much beer; don't worry about it. (JK - I don't know)
-
Documented proof? Well I've seen my husband's pee, and it IS foamy. :o
I personally wouldn't freak out over a little bit of bubbles. This is probably way TMI but his is foamy like dish soap...almost to the top of the bowl sometimes. (And before anyone asks, I don't make a habit out of watching him pee. ::) )
-
Since we are on the subject, your pee (good pee) should be yellow.
I remember teasing my ex-husband because his pee was yellow and mine was clear that I drank only water and "not all that pop."
Not knowing "anything" about renal failure at the time. I also boasted about "finally" sleeping through the night without having to get up and pee. ........man was I shocked when they told me I had renal failure.

FYI, I don't drink any alcoholic beverages. I DO drink quite alot of soda, juice and iced tea though.

Ya, when my transplanted kidney finally stopped all output, I was only peeing out water. They did a test and told me that my kidney was filtering out NOTHING ... basically the water was just passing through the kidney and going into my bladder. .. Well, at least I still could drink a lot at that time with the help of my diretic.

Now in the morning i wake up my urine is yellow then after i drink Lot of water in a few hours i will go to the bathroom it is almost clear cause of all the 9 glasses of water a day i Drink cause my regular dr tells me when i have a UT to drink alot of water to avoid them and also to help them if i have a UT.That i guess is why my urine is almost clear sometimes.

Exactly! Your doc is right! Follow what he says! I just wish I had a way to know if I ever have one since I don't pee. It has been a weird thought of mine. "Do I have one? How would I know??"
-
Ok, since we are on the subject of this......when the urine is clear, does that mean kidney failure......now my husband goes a lot and his labs says yellow but there is a little protein...the nurse, GP, and nephrologist keep asking him if it is foaming and he says no......
Now not to get off topic but because of the type of jobs I had for last so many years, I deliberately don't drink hardly any anything when I am at work so that I don't have to take washroom breaks, is that unhealthy?
