Title: Anyone done dialysis in Cabo
Post by: melissahumm on August 13, 2008, 12:42:05 PM
We own timeshare in Cabo and My son wants to go.  I have read that they have a new dialysis center at Areomed Hospital.  It is geared towards visitors.  Of course I would love to go,but I am scared out of my mind.  We have done a lot of traveling, but only in the US.  The Doctors and Nurses are not very supportive of this.  I need advice,
Melissa

hey melissahumm, What are the doctors/nurses reasoning for not traveling?

I found these sites.

We have dialyzed in Guatemala.

If you are concerned about standards, book through Holiday Dialysis International (www.hditravel.com). It is affiliated with Fresenius and they only book at units that meet their standards. Their contact person is listed as Chiara Frattini and a phone number is given We spoke to her and she was immensely helpful and personable.

In Guatemala, the "unit" was at a hospital in Guatemala City, the capitol - the ONLY approved location in the country. It too was geared towards visitors (most Guatemalans cannot afford dialysis). Mexico (Cabo San Lucas, right?) as a larger "richer" country probably has many more locations offered by Holiday Dialysis International.

Our experience was excellent, with a nephrologist visiting every day and a dedicated, well trained, very knowledgeable technician taking care of only Rolando. He dialyzed in a bed in his own private room with a Fresenius machine. I was allowed to stay for the entire treatment. Based on our experience we would not hesitate to travel south of our border again.

As you probably know, Medicare does not pay beyond our borders. Each treatment cost roughly $200.00 US, sometimes a little more sometimes a little less (and they take Mastercard, Visa, and American Express!)

Go and have fun!
