Title: A great substitute for Coke/Pepsi
Post by: sickofbeingsick on August 07, 2008, 12:08:51 AM
I just discovered Blue Sky Cola at the Whole Foods Store. It's all natural cola with no artificial color, flavor, or preservatives. Sounds yucky right? Wrong. This stuff tastes just like Coke!! I couldn't believe it--I was a Coke junkie before my ESRD--that was the hardest thing to give up. And the best part is....NO PHOSPHORUS!! I brought it to my dietician and she okayed it, and I even e-mailed the company and they said "We do not add phosphoric acid to our products." I purposely drank 2 or 3 over the weekend because they draw labs every Monday and I wanted to be sure...My phosphorus stayed within the limits. I hope this helps those of you who hate rootbeer and Sprite (like I do). Try it and let me know if you like it!

Sounds interesting SOBS... just wish I could get it down here....

(shhh don't tell my dietician I had a vanilla coke the other day... I reckon I'm entitled though since my phosphate is low woohoo!)

great find and a good tip for everyone!

Never heard of Blue Sky before - where are you located?  I'm in Michigan.   I'm also a big Pepsi lover - and pretty much gave it up.  However, the dietician called me the other day and said my Phosphorous was a little low.  I said - "Are you telling me I can drink a Diet Pepsi?".  She sighed, but conceded that it would be OK.  Woohoo!

my doctor just screams when you mention coke/pepsi. i never really figured out why. a 12 oz can of pepsi according to all the charts has about 85 mg of phos. thats less than the 3 oz of chicken i'm supposed to eat. i finally figured that when i eat the chicken i'm eating a meal and taking my binders. when most people drink a soda it's not with a meal and they wouldn't think to take binders. anyway i've done away with the coke/pepsi, i like rootbeer. but you still have to be careful there some rootbeer has phos.

Blue Sky Cola can usually also be found at stores that sell natural type foods.

There's a whole foods in Sugarland, I think. And I've seen Blue Sky colas at HEB I think.. Somewhere.. I've seen them before.

Why didn't anyone tell me about this when I was on dialysis! Argh!

I've been avoiding cola drinks for a long time now, not just because of kidney health but because of the potentially adverse effect on bone health even in perfectly healthy women.  There used to be some thought that all carbonated drinks were detrimental but a 2006 study seemed to find that it was just the colas.  I also avoid soda drinks because of the high sugar contents and aspartame is something I'm not sure I want to take in a lot of either.  Were I diabetic I might have to but since I'm not I like to keep things in the realm of non-chemical wherever possible.
