Michael Kelly, MD, receives the James W. Haviland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nephrology

RenalWEB (http://www.renalweb.com/) links to a Northwest Kidney Centers press release (http://www.nwkidney.org/aboutUs/news/HavilandPressRelease2008.html) announcing that Dr. Michael Kelly has had bestowed upon him the James W. Haviland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nephrology.

Dr. Kelly is my Nephrologist and I was honored to say a few words the night he officially received the award in front of his family and many of his colleagues. He is a great choice for the award (I had no role in his selection). I'm lucky to have him as my doctor and I have been fortunate to volunteer with him on NKC's governance boards and committees. My idea of a trustee is based on Mike's example.

He's in practice at Minor and James Medical (http://www.minorandjames.com/) in Seattle; the website includes a video profile and introduction (http://www.minorandjames.com/our_physicians/nephrology/kelly.htm) that is very good (after reading the press release, check out the video). When I imagine a healthcare system centered on a doctor/patient relationship (http://www.billpeckham.com/from_the_sharp_end_of_the/2008/07/a-healthcare-un.html) I am thinking of the doctor/patient relationship at the heart of my healthcare system. An engaged patient, coupled with a highly skilled and ethical doctor makes optimal dialysis inevitable.

Mike continues a tradition at NKC that takes ethics very seriously, he practices the Right Ethics. He is a model other doctors should follow. Congratulations Dr. Kelly. It is well deserved.
