Title: Installing your own IV / Doing own blood exam
Post by: jdat on July 22, 2006, 11:27:54 AM
Does anyone here know how to install an IV on yourself?

What about drawing your own blood for labs?

Sorry if I am not using the most precise words for doing these things but's a very serious question.

I haven't discussed it with my own doctor at this stage but that is something I may consider doing overtime ( while travelling ) by drawing my own blood and fedexing it back to the lab and such.

I really don't see why there would be any reasons I couldn't do it .... well the blood drawing ... IV seems a little trickier.

Ps: please don't call me crazy  ;D >:D

It might depend on your unit as some might rather not let you take the risk. Others might suggest you have a personal nurse for these things. I don't know.

Never tried putting one in.

Here they take blood from the needles for lab before connecting them to the machines.

Look, there has GOT to be a lab closer then a hour and a half away.  Ask where a closer one is and they can ship it out.

Just a suggestion.

Well I am thinking a bit ahead of myself to be honest.

I might be going to the US in a couple months and I have no desire of being charged 5-600$ for blood labs ( that's what I've had to pay for them over there in the past ).

and btw BigSky I am not on dialysis anymore ( just got a transplant ). Yes I realize this is the section dedicated to that but I still thought I might get more responses here.

And Rerun going to a lab and having them ship out was something that crossed my mind. I should look into that and potential costs.
