Title: Blessed with good neph
Post by: devon on June 02, 2008, 01:18:58 PM
I really gotta brag on my nephrologist.

Today I got a call from one of my docs (2 in the practice).  She got the labs from my regular doc and called me to make sure I was okay.   My creatinine is 6.7.  She was concerned.  Asked if I was symptomatic, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, drowsey, etc.  I told her "remarkably no except for the lethargy, occasional ammonia breath.

She told me my next appointment is on the 17th and asked if I wanted to come in sooner.  She said I could if needed.  I told her I would be fine until then.  See her on the 17th.  She verified the appointment on the schedule just to make sure.

Jeeze. what a wonderful, caring, considerate doctor I have been blessed with!  It's wonderful to know I'm not just another body with ESRD.  I've heard and experienced many of the horror stories so I'm very thankful to have this doc and the others I have.  I am very very fortunate!

Just wanted to share that with you all.  I know you'll appreciate it too.

Devon,
That is so nice to hear. My neph is awesome too. He called me Friday to see how I was doing. I love UPMC. I have gotten so many calls from the doctors themselves instead of a nurse. I have gotten calls out of the blue checking on me. A big pat on the back for our health care providers! :2thumbsup;

There are some good and loving doctors out there. Luckily, you have one of them.

It is so wonderful to hear something positive about healthcare providers.  Doctors such as the one you have show that at least some of them have not forgotten why they chose the careers that they did.

I've only ever had good experiences with my nephs over the years.  My transplant neph in particular is a gem.  I'm not including however some of the "baby nephs", my name for the residents or other advanced student types in nephrology, some of whom seem to think that they know everything and then some.

We are blessed with one of the best, every month when it is about time for a visit with him he calls us and asks what time I will be putting her on the NxStage, I tell him our plans and he comes to the house to see her on the machine,  Say's it is on his way to the northern clinic, but I know it is quite a bit out of his way, but he knows it is hard on Sharon to ride all the way to his practice and he does us an enormous favor by doing so.........

   My husbands neph is just great- he see him every week, and is also very accessible to phone calls. I do appreciate that so much. We have a GREAT GP too, him and the neph are pals, so they work together well. I promised them both in the beginning I would never abuse the the priviledge of being treated with expediency, (by being a nusance) but that we expected to be taken seriously when we call. Its a comforting understanding, I have confidence that they are there when he(husband) needs them.They are both excellent. I just could not say enough how awesome they are.

  I have to say too, the first of year he pretty much hated everyone at his center. Now that we have calmed down, and gotten more used to the situation, and gained the confidence of an IHD Kidney Education. We get along quite well with most of the people at his center, they are very nice to him, and as his love, I sure appreciate that. And, I, trust them a whole lot more. Which is nice.

For everyone who has said they have
a wonderful neph, you guys are very,
very fortunate.

We do not care (to put it mildly) for
the nephs Les has been seeing -
But his primary Dr is just terrific!!!  DH
is scheduled to see a new neph very soon,
so I am hoping this Dr will be much better
than the others.

To get a return phone call from them is
equal to getting the price of gas  down to where
it is affordable -  That should tell ya how interested
they are in their patients.

Anne, if you are in the area, my doc is in Hurst-Bedford near HEB Hospital off 182/121 between Fort Worth and Dallas.

His name is Meltzer.

I now have a great neph as well. My first one, well he seemed to miss the cancer that was growing inside me so we had to ditch him. My new guy is young, aggressive, communicative, and only concerned with getting me to my 5 years as healthy as I can be. I can't say enough good things about him.

I admit I've got a great Neph,  as well.  Aside from the long waits in his freezing cold office on visit days, he's the best.  I like his staff, too!  He hasn't let me down yet!  He's called me personally once when my labs showed an extremely high potassium.  Other than that, his nurse calls me.

It's wonderful to hear about your neph, Devon, and so many other people with good ones. My first neph totally missed the fact that I had primary hyperparathyroidism -- when I asked him why my calcium levels were high, he said it was nothing. A lab tech diagnosed me! I fired his  :sir ken; and now I have a great one. It makes such a difference.

That is great Devon.  I also, love my neph.  I did change doctors in the same practice. I asked the nurses which doctor was always looking into new solutions or was willing to try different things.  We get along great and spend part of each visit talking about our families.  He will research if I have a question he doesn't have the answer to and call me at home with the answer.   It helps so much to be a real person instead of just a failing kidney!  And I tell him all the time that he is the reason I am doing so well.  :thumbup;
