I know thirst and dry mouths are a common thing but last night i had major problems. I have noticed my mouth being extra dry lately and mentioned it to my doc , she gave me a 'saliva substitute' spray to try but didnt say why it was happening. The spray is rubbish , it works for all of 2 mins and then nothing. Anyway last night my mouth was so badly dry (no saliva at all ) that it kept me awake all night as i had to keep rinsing my mouth with water , just to wet it and stop my tongue from getting sore. Ive never had such a dry mouth that i cant swallow ..any ideas ?

When I get that way, I'll chew on a piece of gum (something minty is best, I've found) and just fall asleep with it in my mouth. I've never had it fall out of my mouth while I'm asleep (except as a child!), but if you have long hair, you could always put it up when you go to bed. It works pretty well.

sometimes I use a spray bottle but lately I've been taking the cap off and drinking the whole thing

Drink a pint of water, then vomit it straight back up.
