Title: Pushing rice and noodles on us?
Post by: Sara on July 17, 2006, 07:03:26 PM
Seems like every single time Joe goes to dialysis he tells me they tell him, 'eat more rice, eat more pasta.'  He already eats big servings of rice a few times a week - why does he need to eat more?  Is there something important that I'm not aware of?

as far as I know it is because WHITE rice and NO-YOLK noodles are the best for a dialysis patient's limited diet. Basically everything else is bad even if in the least.

Are they concerned about weight loss? I find it weird they are pushing rice and pasta, considering it contains a good bit of fluid!

No he actually needs to lose weight.  That's why I find it so weird.  That and he's diabetic so he doesn't really need to be eating additional carbs.

I would ignore them then!

Sara, you call that dietition and ask her.  They push rice and noodles on me because she says I need to gain weight and rice and noodles will fill me up.  She also pushes Couscous.  I hate rice and noodles (unless in Lasagna)  ;)

LOL Yeah but the only things good with noodles are the 'bad' stuff (tomatoes, cheese, etc.)  I make a mean lasagna!

Yeah, tequila has those little glasses so we will be watching our fluid intake.   :D

I think sometimes they ONLY think about a renal diet and NOT the diabetic one so you should mention that. And in my experience ONLY listen to the DIETICIAN. The nurses don't always know but the dietician will!

He needs to be honest and tell them he got the point the first time around, because seriously it gets really old hearing the same thing week after week  ::)

But I'm not teaching anyone anything here  ;)

What about pasta with a cream based sauce?? Cream has negligable potassium, not sure about phosphate though. I make a nice creamy bacon pasta with pesto. I normally use tomato pesto but it would also be nice with basil pesto which should be fine for Dx diet.

ANY cream based sauce WILL have phosphate.

white unflavoured rice, apples, water (within reason to limits) and eggwhites (NOT the yolks!!) which are good in protein.

Not sure about their logic.  You might ask them the logic behind it.  Even though a person may need to lose weight they actually be malnourshied.

I eat what ever I want, BUT in moderation and I take my binders. Live a little, I LOVE good food.
Title: Re: Pushing rice and noodles on us?

That might be ok for you Epoman, but its not suitable for everyone. I am a very good example of that! When I was on 5hrx3-4 I could barely eat anything or even look at a tomato. Moderation might be safe for some, but not all. I also think one persons idea of moderation, is a lot different to another. Most importantly, learn to know the signs of a high potassium, and if you even slightly think it might be high, seek medical attention. If you can self diagnose this, it makes the ERs people's jobs much easier, and you will be treated quicker if needed.

I eat anything in general and take my phosphate binders BUT I also have taken certain things out of my diet like:

milk, whole wheat bread, cheese (I do eat it very rarely but with binders because frankly I LOVE THAT CHEESE!!!!!), ice cream, pudding, chocolate, bananas, oranges, pears, tomatoes, yogurt, cream sauces (some times I have it with binders cuz I love that too!!)...

and then I take my binders with everything else. Like fries. I love fries. But mind you, I have severely limited that ... as well as limited fast food in general as most of it is high in Phosphate!! Infact, the fast food chicken .. most of it (especially McDonald's) has ADDED PHOSPHATE as well as water in their chicken!! But when I do get fast food I ask for a kiddy size drink (yes a lot of places have it and WILL give it to you) and I skip the fries or get a small size :P

Buyer Beware!!

I used to have awful trouble with cheese. I would have just one slice and my knuckles would swell up and the pain was so severe. It was enough to stop me eating it.
Have you ever tried rice milk angie? Its lower in potassium, and cant see why it would be high in phosphate. I love it, always have.

I posted a thread 'Low Phosphorus Substitutes' and it listed rice milk as a possible low phosphorus substitute for milk.

white rice milk has little to no phosphate in it I believe. But when I tried it I wanted to puke! It tasted like watered rice.... like rice has been sitting in water for a month and you decided to drink it .. yuck!!

LOL thats why I like it, its not as milky as normal milk. I used to water down a glass of milk anyway, so I guess thats why I like it.

 ;D

Same thing I thought.  Only time I use it is when being used as part of a mix in something that has to be cooked, then get no taste of it.

I love rice milk on cocoa pops or just on its own. Cream makes me really bloated so I have to watch that. I do love it though, especially on scones or pikelets.

Piklets are basically like pancakes but are thicker and fluffy like cake and you make them about the size of a cookie. You usually have them as morning or afternoon tea with jam and cream.

Yummy!!! Have you ever heard of Crepes? They are like pancakes but thinner and there is a restaurant in the town next to my small city that serves them as different meals .. like with meat .. and desserts with fruit sauces and ice cream :) Yumm! Real good! My mom took me there for my 32nd birthday!

these are crepes:

http://www.cabinofmemories.com/images/Crepes.jpg

http://www.bunncapitol.com/cookbook/TrendS/parisienne%20chicken%20crepes.gif

But crepes do have milk and whole eggs in them usually so ... unless there is a dialysis-friendly crepe recipe ...

But I did find one that tells you how many carbs and such .. http://users3.ev1.net/~FONTLADY/light_crepes.html
Quote
Makes about 10-12 crepes, 6 inches in diameter
Can be frozen

Note: You could use Carb Countdown milk instead of the cream and water.

Per Crepe: 108 Calories; 9g Fat; 5g Protein; 5g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 2g Net Carbs

You can use the Dairy Delicious milk to make the pasta sauce and it is good in casseroles. Or at least worked for me. I was warned that I fed my son too much rice--after being told how great a choice white (YUK) white rice was for him. They said he was getting extra fluid that way! :-[

In my country we call them 'bakes' (although they are not baked, but fried).  In this country and many other Caribbean islands, they call them 'johnny cakes'

Okay, I'm kind of nervous here. My nurse told me that I wasn't on any diet restrictions. So I've been eating willy nilly! I have gained a few pounds so I am trying to be a little better.

Problem is I'm freakin tired when I get home. I work about 45 minutes away from home so it's no less than a 10 hour day for me. By the time I get home I do not want to cook so I normally get something fast - or a bowl of cereal - with milk!

I've got my test results and the only thing that really looks bad is my calcium. I've been bad about taking my Renegal (sp?) and calcitrol (sp?) so i guess that's why.

I am guessing that everything is okay as long as my dialysis nurse says and my tests are okay?

What are binders?

Hi Deedee,  the Renagel are your binders,  they help your body with the phosphorus, very important to take with meals.

Ya, and as long as your phosphate is good and you are taking your binders then you can keep with how you are eating (including milk) right now. Do what works for you with keeping your bloodwork results in mind. If it is good, then you are doing some thing right ;)

Phosphorus does not dialyze out very well, so we take binders.  It binds the Phosphorus in our intestines and we POOP it out.  The tablets act like little sponges with our food to soak up Phosphorous.  How much does it soak up?   No one can tell me.  Just take them.  Just "do" it.

Ya and because of how much it binds (depending on person to person) sometimes you will have constipation.

I used to take this liquid stuff that tastes like orange but I can't remember the name of it now. It worked well enough though. The Nephrologist prescribed it for me.
