Thousands of kidney patients’ lives numbered
17:11' 09/05/2008 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City has nearly 1,000 patients suffering from kidney failure who need kidney transplants but only 2% of them will be able to have the operation. The remaining patients must prolong their lives through kidney dialysis.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Sinh of Cho Ray Hospital said the hospital has nearly 500 kidney patients who are on dialysis. Around 30% of them need kidney transplants but only 1% of them have suitable kidneys donated by relatives.
At Gia Dinh Hospital, only four kidney patients were given new kidneys between 2000-2003. Since then the hospital has had no operation because there has been no kidney donor.
At People’s Hospital 115, only 8 of 30 patients who need new kidneys are scheduled to receive operations.
Besides lack of donated kidneys, HCM City hospitals also don’t have enough dialysis machines to serve their patients. Each hospital has from 10-40 only, while the number of patients in need is around one thousand.
