Title: First trip via airplane on PD!
Post by: mariannas on April 14, 2008, 11:33:59 AM
Woooooooooo!!!! I did it!!!

Granted, it was only for 36 hours, but it was a good test run.  I flew to San Diego from Seattle on Saturday morning to meet a friend visiting from Australia.  I packed my solution since it wasn't worth it to have Baxter deliver for such a small trip.  I got a plastic container that fit into my suitcase in case something happened and they leaked.  Luckily, all was well and I think I could probably do away with the container next time.  Those bags are pretty strong.  The only "mishap" was that the hotel my friend booked had no microwave.  No worries because it was about 75 on Saturday and 85 on Sunday so I just warmed my bags in the car!  It worked out perfectly.

I'm very excited about this newfound freedom.  Now I know it will not be difficult to travel and next time I can try to go for longer and have Baxter deliver my bags.  YAY!

I have wondered about flying with the bags of solution?
Did they check your bags or ask what you were carrying solution for or anything.
I thought I heard a rule about no fluids on board anymore.

I was actually able to take them on my carry on!  My PD nurse filled out a form that I just showed to the person who looks at the baggage through the x ray machine.  When I was in Seattle they actually did look at the bags, but in San Diego they just let me right on through.  You do have to keep everything in its' original packaging, but you would want to do that anyway.

I flew with Alaska and they were super nice both ways.  Just make sure you have a not from either your doctor or dialysis clinic and you should be fine!

I'm leaving for a second flight on Sunday!  This time I'm taking a trip to Victoria BC via seaplane with my parents.  It's a lot easier since I don't have to go to a real airport, but I still had to make arrangements to get all the solution on the flight.  This will be my longest trip away from home 4 days, 3 nights!
