Aloha everyone on this sad day --
I had been considering forming a team for our local National Kidney Foundation: Triangle Kidney Walk for a bit. Last night, when Mom and I recieved the phone call from Kitkatz about our dear Susie, I knew I had to. So last night I created our team.
Team Walking for Nana and Nina. Nana, the name Paris' (my mother's) grandchildren call her and of course Nina for the Damn Dame herself, our beloved Susie. We are walking and raising money in honor of Paris and in memory of Goofynina.
We began recieving donations only 12 hours ago and already we are above $500. If you are interested in making a donation in memory of Susie please follow the link below or you can PM me.
Just know, that on March 29th we are all joined together in spirit as those fighting or those effected by Kidney Disease and on that day we are all together, honoring Goofynina.
We all loved Susie so much, her silliness and kindness and huge smile. This is my way of honoring her memory. I love you Susie.
Aloha,
Beth

***Below is the email I sent out to friends and family this morning telling about the walk and why we are raising money***
Happy Valentine's,

> Hello! All of you know me and some, in turn, know my wonderful mother. My Mother has been living with Kidney Failure for several years now. It is a silent, but I assure you, deadly disease. I watch the pain my mother goes through both physical and emotional. She has been lucky so far, avoiding dialysis (life support) in hope of receiving a kidney transplant. I, along with several others were tested, she is at the top of the list, but unfortunately, she has a extremely rare condition, in simple terms, her body will always reject every kidney. This means a transplant is close to impossible without more research. She will begin Dialysis soon. For those who do not know, Dialysis is a process that replaces your kidney. 3 times a week my mother will sit in a room with other patients, and have every ounce of her blood taken out of her body, filtered and put back in. If she does not have this done, she will not live. It is, in the truest since of the word, Life Support. She will do this for the rest of her life.
>
> Kidney Disease is widespread, we need research to better the lives of those living on dialysis and those waiting for a transplant.
>
> Through this process with my mother I have had the opportunity to meet many others living with kidney failure. One was an amazing woman, Susie. Susie is a moderator on a forum for those living with kidney disease. Several members of the forum met in Las Vegas in October and my mother and I had the honor of going! While there we met Susie, when we first spotted her walking through the casino she was wearing a tiara, boa and sash that said "Drama Queen" GoofyNina, as she is known on the forum was such an incredible spirit on that trip, always smiling, always laughing. Susie lost her battle with Kidney Disease yesterday. She was 40.
>
> I have formed this team in honor of my mother, Nana and in memory of Susie, Nina. On March 28th my team will walk in Raleigh in the Triangle Kidney Walk 2008. I need your help. The team's goal is to raise $2000. You can help in two ways. Follow the link to make a donation straight on our Team's site, or to join our team, walk with us on March 29, help us get to our goal!
>
> Thank you so much for all of your help!

Hey there everyone -- thanks for your kind words and support! It is such a wondeful tribute to our sweet Susie.
Just to update everyone - as of a couple minutes ago we are at $840! Mind you, we started asking for donations yesterday morning. Most of these come from friends and co-workers of my siblings - people who have never met my mom or heard of Goofynina but were so touched by there stories that they felt compelled to give. Amazing - the compassion and support people are showing! Thank you so much to those of you here who have already donated and those who might not be able to but who are keeping us in their thoughts!

I don't even know how to post this, how to write this to everyone.
Our team is at $3,440.00. In three days we have raised $3,440.00.
A friend of both my brothers just donated $2500.
I can't believe this. It's completely beyond my expectations. Our goal was $2000. We are the number 1 team, by a lot.
I think Susie is smiling on us all somewhere, guiding people to open their hearts to this cause.

Great job, AlohaBeth! Give me some more info on this event. We're a little over two hours from Raleigh. If my Marvin is better by then, we want to come up. Where will it be held? Dates and times? If my Marvin felt like walking a few steps in this, would he be allowed? Will Paris be there? We must meet her. Let me know.
-
What a wonderful thing you are doing AlohaBeth. :2thumbsup; And in the honour of two precious ladies! Keep on doing what you are doing, girl! You're doing well!
-
Beth...you are doing something amazing! Congratulations and thanks for walking for the cause. I wish I could have donated more, but I'm happy to help a little!

I am going to attempt to post this, not sure how well it will work. This is the newsletter for the NKF Triangle Kidney Walk that went out today.
There is a piece on our team and Mom and Susie's story -- the interviewer kind of took liberties on some
things but I think it was a really great piece all in all - and it gave great advertisement for IHD!

So many nice people. You are great for what you do and who you are.
I just heard from Okarol on another friend site I belong to about Goofynina. I feel so bad for not visiting back here and checking in on my people! Since my transplant, I almost feel as If I'm not sick anymore.. almost.. These things are reality checks. Every moment is precious.
Goofynina and others afflicted with renal problems will be greatly missed.
Lots of love, from me and mine to you and yours. :cuddle;

IHD family, I received a PM from Susie's sister, Terrie this morning. She was asking for information on the Walk because she is thinking of flying out for it! Wouldn't that be incredible? If she comes, I hope anyone in driving distance could come to meet her. She said that some days she is in denial about losing Susie. She appreciates everyone at IHD. I will keep you updated.

Happy World Kidney Day!
Are you an organ donor?
Today is World Kidney Day. One simple act from you may save lives of those waiting for a kidney transplant. Please take a moment to sign a donor card and make your wishes known to your family. Also, if you ever feel that you could be a living donor, there is great information at www.donatelife.com. Another good source of information for living donors is www.livingdonors.com.
There are so many waiting for a second chance. Heaven doesn't want your organs---but there are many people on earth that do! Please consider giving the gift of life when you make your final plans.
You could save 8 lives with your organs. Think of that, 8 people. Mothers and Fathers, Children, Grandchildren... All have a second chance because of your kindness to do this simple act of signing a piece of paper.
If you are interested in making a donation in honor of World Kidney Day, please follow this link to my donation page for the Triangle Kidney Walk on March 29th. Our team is amazingly only $45 from our $5,000 goal! Help us get there!

Hey guys, thanks for the sweet words!
The walk went amazing! It was freezing and raining - but we had a blast! we had 27 walkers on our team!
Todd (my brother) was the top fundraiser and was awarded a plaque and our team was the top team - we won the traveling ENORMOUS trophy that will sit proud in our house until next year (unless we win it again!)
I will post pictures a bit later -- but for now here is a link to the story - there is a video too!
http://news14.com/content/top_stories/594336/1st-annual-triangle-kidney-walk-held/Default.aspx

Well done Beth & Paris!
Of course the video got me crying again.
Susie's purple boa has turned into an amazing reminder of living and loving life.

Purple boa will travel. Nice job...Boxman
-
Well done , made me cry too watching the video
-
:clap; I am so proud of you Paris & Beth (and all your team of walkers). The video made me laugh and cry - whatever the viewers must have thought when you (Paris) said you first met Susie walking through a casino in a purple boa and tiara :rofl; :rofl;. We all know why but they must had thought who the hell was she?? Susie is laughing too, I just know it. She would be so proud. Well done all of you :grouphug;
-
I know I shouldn't have done it. I am working at the Tourist Board's Information booth at the airport. I went to the Hertz booth next door to use their internet. I am sitting here with all the visitors passing, and I am weeping uncontrollably. What a wonderful job you guys did!!! :2thumbsup; :clap; I am so proud of you! Thank you for honouring my girlfriend's memory so wonderfully. I just love my IHD family!
-
Thank you Paris and Beth for all your hard work. The success of your walk proves your dedication to the cause and although noone else may know Nina. it doesn't matter because we do. Susie left a huge impact on the lives of many and I know she had a hand in your success. Friends forever and that is just the way it is, period.
-
AWSOME job guys :big hug: :big hug:

AlohaBeth has many pictures, but has jury duty tomorrow, so it will be tomorrow night before she posts them. I have some big emotions right now and want to write my thoughts about the Walk, my daughter and Susie. In the written article, the reporter explained that Nina was a friend who lost her battle against kidney failure on Valentine's Day. We were the talk of the event and hundreds of people knew the tiaras and boas were in honor of Nina's memory. It looked like a flock of purple chickens were plucked by the time we left the event -purple feathers everywhere!! My little guys wore hats that said "Nana's Boys" with an Eiffel Tower. They were all so excited about walking but 5 K. is a long way for their little legs. At the beginning of the video, a little girl is riding in a red wagon. That is one of mine---Emma Rebecca, 5. I can't wait to share all the pictures. Wait till you see the trophy! Oh my goodness! Everyone asks where will I put it? Right in the middle of everything - I want everyone to see it. I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of Beth. I have incredible children with huge, compassionate hearts. Beth sees me daily, and knows first hand how this disease has changed me. I can put on a front when I am out, but she is the one who hears me up during the night sick, or not sleeping, or too tired to move. And then when she heard about Susie, she knew she had to do something positive to honor her. The director of the Triangle Kidney Foundation is in love with my family. She talked to them all during the fundraising and was very impressed with their money raising efforts. She is the one who told the news team to talk to us, that we had a good story. She has also been on IHD several times since Beth told her about the site. She is now telling others that this is a great place for support. She loves the site. She said we are a caring and supportive group willing to help each other. :thumbup; and she will recommend IHD to everyone looking for support or more information. At the beginning of the Walk, everyone was excited and geared up. Beth and I looked at each other, and the tears just started flowing. We hugged and kept saying "this is for Susie". And we will be back next year and again, it will be for Susie. And once more, let me say that Beth is amazing. She did it all - the organizing, the shirts, contacting people - everything. I am grateful to have her in my life and proud of the woman she is. On Friday night, she was registering voters, Saturday the Walk and Monday has jury duty. And works 40 hours a week. And moves to California in 3 weeks (but that is another post!). At the end of the video, I am hugging a boy, my grandson, Ezekiel (Zeke). When the walk was over and we were heading for our cars, he looked up at me and asked "Do you have your new kidney now, Nana?". More tears! Life is simple when you are 6, Kidney Walk = new kidney. Thank all of you for supporting Beth during this time. It has helped the grieving process to have something to focus on. Thank you for accepting her into this family and giving her a place as the daughter of a kidney patient. Beth is a hero; always stepping up to help. I love her, can you tell? :cuddle;
-
Paris, you always make me cry!
Love to you and Beth and your family!
-
Wow! Nothing more can be said! :grouphug;
-
Thank you Paris & Beth for letting us all be part of this. We all love you very much. :grouphug; (But I do wish you'd stop making us cry ;))
-
Thank you so much.. You all are amazing..
And.. it's ok to cry...I am.
-
What a beautiful way to remember an amazing person. :grouphug;
