Sisters Under-go Christmas Kidney Transplant
posted 10:58 pm Tue December 25, 2007 - District Heights, Md.
Two local sisters have an extra special reason to celebrate this Christmas because one of them just donated a life-saving kidney to the other.
Since 2001, Betsy Calloway has been living with a failing kidney Finally in October, it got so bad she had to start dialysis. It was a temporary solution, because what she really needed was transplant. "Everybody was like, 'what are you doing for christmas?' I was like, 'I'm having a kidney transplant!' I'll be in the hospital. I thought that's where I'd be spending my Christmas."
The transplant went so well, Betsy got released on Christmas Eve. "Just to have a guardian angel like my sister Erin who unselfishly gave a piece of her to me." Erin said, "I'm having her at dialysis three times a week for three hours, just the possibility of her not being with me, for me it was just unimaginable."
ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? Both girls are still healing from the surgeries and the prognosis, they say, is very good. "Its been wonderful. I feel great. I feel like I have so much energy and a renewed sense of life."
"It was our christmas present to each other and the best one we've had to date."
