Title: People liking your arm?
Post by: SpeedFleX on August 19, 2007, 11:06:47 AM
Yes I just wanted to know what people think when they touch your arm, for example this lady at work accendtliy touched it jumped a little and asked wtf is that? I explained it and she seems to like it for some odd reason! She says and cool and the viberations are soothing. have any of you had such experiences

I have let people touch my arm...it freaks most people out. Some will think it's cool and want to touch it again, and if they are lucky I will let them listen to it! I call it my "party trick"!

I love touching Rolando's access. It is the neatest feeling, kind of like a turbulent river and very strong. I'm not sure why I like it, perhaps it is the reassurance.

I let friends touch it...usually they jump back, but a few want to know more about it.
I usually wear polos and they have short leaves and show off the access very well.  About 2 weeks ago I was at Walmart checking out.  The checker was some young guy...he saw my access and said..."I'm not a doctor but that looks like it hurts", I just said no it doesnt and walked off.
I do love to show it off....i like to see peoples reactions.....LOL..

Of my kids, the four year old loves it, the two year old is terrified of it.

I have fun telling my nieces and nephews various things such as a tropical worm crawled into my arm and made a home there, a shark bit me, or I have a group of bees living in my arm. (I have a VERY big fistula with very strong flows. My wife used to say it kept her awake at night if I rested my arm on the pillows)

Responses vary from outright horror, to awe with the response "That's so coooool!"   :clap;

I've been using the shark bite answer when people ask what I did to it.  I tell them I got bit by a freshwater shark in Lake Michigan.

My cat still loves my purring arm, though!

I've been using the shark bite excuse for quite a while.  It especially works well with women I'm interested in flirting with.  I usually wear short sleeve shirts and don't mind showing off my red badge of courage.  The tech's use a lot of tape for the gauze pads they fold, so you can't help but notice it.  I used to consider it a liability when dating because I used to think the last thing women wanted was damaged goods.

haha love the thread...

Yeah I've had the mixture of "cool!" to revulsion... most people jumping back and freaking out... which is kind of fun when you KNOW they have no idea what they're up against lol....

Perhaps the most BIZARRE response I ever got.. and folks, just like that Dave bloke says.. I am not making this up.... "So do you have trouble going through airport security?" and I was like "HUH?? what the...?" "Well you know.. from those batteries you have in there. Are they painful to replace?"

I just nearly died from laughter....

I haven't had any funny reactions over my arm, but I did have an amusing reaction to my catheter when I was still using it. I was in NxStage training, and my training nurse's 6 yr old grand daughter had come to visit. She came into the training room to show grandma a drawing she did right as I was changing the dressing on the catheter. She didn't notice what I was doing until my nurse said "honey if you're going to come in here you have to put on a mask." She then looked up to see me rubbing this gooey brown stuff (batadine) on a tube sticking out of my chest with my own blood flowing through it. Her mouth opened wide and she ran out of the room yelling "Ew, Ew, Ew!" My nurse and I both burst out laughing, and for a few minutes her grand daughter was afraid to come back in until we assured her that my catheter was all covered back up. And the funny thing is, the little girl wants to be a nurse just like grandma.

I only just saw this thread and found it really amusing.  My grandson (4) loves to listen to my graft.  My nurse told me that is a good thing, because he would be quick to realize if anything was going wrong.
Some of my students as school asked me about it and I let them have a listen.  They were all thrilled out of their skins.  It is a good party trick! ;D

I guess that's why they call it a "thrill" :D

oh my cat sometimes likes to rest her little head on it.. I think she thinks I am purring at her like her mother or something. It's so sweet :)

 :urcrazy; For some reason i have had a problem my whole life with people thinking i am a drug addict. I think it has allot to do with the way i look. With my fistula my family loved to touch it. I have a few nephews that thought it was cool. But for the most part people think of it as tracks from a junkie. I can tell form the look on their faces what they are thinking. Sometimes i like to put on a pair of shades and just nod at them :beer1;
