I have found that since I have been on dialysis that the taste of foods has changed a lot. I have a problem with eating enough protein, mainly because I find it hard to eat very much meat. I have always liked chicken, but can hardly get it down anymore. Fish is OK, if it is baked, but most muscle meat is a real struggle. Mostly I manage to get barely enough protein by eating eggs, and tuna salad.
Has anyone else had this problem? What have you done about it?

I noticed that I hate, I mean hate bell peppers since I have been at dialysis. The smell and the taste will put me off and I cannot eat. Also some things have a stranger taste. Meat does not bother me at all. I often crave protein. Somethings are just weird aren't they???

Taste problems associated with kidney disease are normally due to imbalances, high potassium/creatinin/urea and so on.
I was off so many things - couldn't touch milk or other dairy, most soft drinks, beer! (God no!! ::) ) and was
feeling sicker than a pregnant woman (and for longer). But that was _before_ dialysis. It improved gradually
once I went onto P.D., even though that was not working very well for me. A more dramatic improvement
( i.e. "appetite of a horse" now :D ) occurred once I went onto Haemo. IN fact, it's only being semi-good
with the fluid restrictions now keeps me from the beer. Small glasses of wine or whisky and ginger ale has
replaced most of my beer intake. I've never been a heavy drinker, I must say in my defence!
So....I'd suggest getting a look at the bloods (I get mine posted to me anyway), as you may be under-
dialised. If you are on the in-unit 3 x 5 regime, I guess there's not much you can do to improve this though.
But have a word with your neph. anyway.

Thanks for the advice, I dialyze 3 hours x 3 days. I see what comes from the dietition but not the rest of the lab. I will speak to my neph. Thanks again. carole

3 hours 3 days omg thats shocking!! :o
Do you have any kidney function at all???
-
I'm on the machine 3 hours 3 times a week too. I would like to know if I would feel better at maybe 4 days a week. NOT that I want to be on the machine more, but I do feel bad. I have zero kidney function. But, my labs are within tolerance except my phosphors.
