Title: A few questions I have, please help me.
Post by: TynyOne on June 30, 2007, 01:45:18 PM
I was encouraged to move this post into the General Discussion board with the intent of hopefully receiving answers to the following questions:  (I copied & pasted my last post with the questions; therefore, some of same my post is included below:  I thank you all in advance for your help in answering my questions.   Have a happy little Saturday afternoon!

I am overwhelmed and deeply touched by such a warm welcome I have received from everyone here!  Thank You!   Thank You!   Thank You!  So, I'd like to begin asking my first two questions.    LOL   My first question is, is anyone on the medication sodium bicarb and if you are, could you please explain exactly what it is for?  Yes, I did ask the doctor that prescribed it to me but he is not my doctor, he was just the doctor on call as well as the "head honcho" over the group of doctors that my doctor is in with and he is also a smart a**; therefore, because he was such a smart a**, I kind of tuned him out when he "tried" to tell me what it is for and also he did not tell me in "booger town" terms,   he told me in his "medical field" terms!    DOH!!!      Also, my second question for today is, does anyone know why they weigh us in kilos instead of pounds?   OK, those are my 2 questions for today.    There will definitely be more to come, I am sure.   Again, thanks for the warm welcome.   Have a happy little evening!

I don't know about the first question ( sodium bicarbonate) but someone gave a great answer to the question concerning using kilos.  My country (not the one in which I presently live) has gone metric more than 10 years ago, and I liked the idea that they used kilos for dialysis.  As the person said, it is easier to understand how much liquid you are taking off, since 1 kilo = 1 litre

But tell me, you guys, isn't the metric system a much neater system?  You don't have to remember all those varying equivalents - 12 inchs, 3 feet, 1 yard, etc.  Just centimeter, meter, etc. everything in tens and hundreds.... I love it!

Sodium bicarbonate is used to help correct acidosis that is a result of kidney failure.  Most patients tend to run a low pH.

Kilos are most likely used as most of the medical field uses the metric system already as it is simpler.

I'm on Cytra- 2. It's for acidosis. Awful tasting stuff but if it keeps me going that's all that matters. Welcome.

Yes, most drs. talk to us like they are absolutely Gods send that no matter what their words we must and should follow.  I just went to see my hematologist dr. and he was like "do not listen to your friends or any sources from internet so just follow his treatments and I will be fine.  WTF.....I just dropped $90 for my co-pay to listen to this crap.

As for Starbuck, I never could remember the actual size of the cup like Tall, Grande, Latte...........WTF.....what happened to the good old days like small, medium and large.

"life is already hard as it is why make it more difficult than it is"

Sodium bicarbonate is to correct the metabolic acidosis which comes with kidney failure.  Look at your blood work, look for CO2.  We try to keep Mike's around 24.  He takes 500 mg twice a day.

As far as docs advising to disregard friends and the internet -- BULLSH*T!!!  :boxing; :boxing;  If not for the internet and sites like this my husband would probably be dead by now.

My nurses ask me for the best download sites so they couldn't really then turn around and tell me not to read IHD or other boards! LOL :D

I was briefly on Sodium Bicard (yellow capsules?) after awhile the doc said I didn't need to bother with them anymore (yay! one less med)
