Title: Protein Blues
Post by: LightLizard on June 11, 2007, 12:49:02 PM
Because of the nature of my condition, the doctors and dieticians I deal with have advised me that I should be eating 8 servings of protien a day.(!) Each serving, they say, should be about the size of a deck of cards. (Playing cards, not tarot cards!)
I find it almost impossible to do, really. It's very expensive, for one thing. And for another thing, my equipment is not capable of dealing with all that protein waste, afterwards, if ya get my drift. ;)
They do supply me with whey powder protein supplement, but it's still a problem for me because it's not always convenient (or tasty) to use, every day.
I have to do something to get my muscle mass back to snuff. I went for a walk the other evening, after having dinner at my daughter's, and that night and all day the next day my feet and lower legs cramped and froze like never before!
ow.

Yup, I'm banging my head against my fridge on a regular basis over the protein problem, too.  I just can't eat that much meat without gagging.  I'm supposed to be eating 80 grams of it a day.  I was talking about the protein requirements the other day while fixing dinner on the grill for a friend, and the question of how much that really was came up.  I checked the label on the burger patties I was stacking, and then emptied the rest of the container on the plate - 7 patties total- held it up and said "That much!"  Bleah - no way I could stomach that.  I don't like the taste of the powders or the bars, and I refuse to add more fluid to my diet with the supplement drinks.  I keep looking for that Muscle Milk stuff, but no one around here seems to carry it.

Help!!  My albumin is low and has been for a very long time.  The nephrologist is always telling me to eat more meat and eggs.  I tell him I do everything I can do.  What I would like to know is there anything out there that tastes good and will help me to raise my albumin?  I have been having trouble with being naseaus and having very high blood sugar lately.  I know protein is not supposed to affect blood glucose levels but my oh my is this really bothering me.

i was mostly vegetarian before this all came down for me, so it's real fun eatin steak, now.  ::)

i've found that fish is a very reasonable choice, and certain cuts of pork chops, (the less fat the better) is good, apparently. one low fat chop is worth two servings of protien, I've been told, so that helps a bit with excess volume...

i eat eggs almost every day, now. and when i eat cereal (cornflakes, usually) i don't use milk. i hate milk. i use 'rice dream' and i stir in a couple of heaping scoops of protein powder, before i add the cereal. i've found the powder is also not bad in a glass of root beer.

as for blood sugar problems, i am really lost on that one. i'm not diabetic, so I haven't had occasion to learn about it.

love

I've always considered meat to be a side dish or flavoring for my carbs.   ;D

I've never been a meat eater.  I really don't like it.   Like LightLizard it messes with my equipment.
Don't like eggs either.

If it weren't for my Muscle Milk/frozen berry shakes, I'd be up the creek.  You can order it online from the Vitamin Shoppe and it's only $5 for shipping, which is great for liquids.

Those of you who need extra protein, is there a GNC near you......if so, talk to those gals over there and they do know what they are doing and will get you the shakes and they don't always cost much....now if you want to go to a gym to buy a shake and those places have the nice flavored ones, but they are a little pricey......I don't really drink those since I do have acid reflux sometimes....
