Title: Do your doctors allow enough time to ask question or want to ?
Post by: st789 on May 20, 2007, 07:57:59 AM
My doctor always in a hurry to move on.  The most I can get out of him is 2 questions.  I learn more from this site more than anywhere else.  Thus, I am very thankful to discover this site!

EDITED:  Moved post to proper thread - Goofynina/Admin.

I'm fortunate that my doctors and PD nurse are very available to me, during working hours.  They'll spend as much time as I need, during working hours.   I can also email them, which is awesome.

Getting questions answered and help after hours, which is usually when it hits the fan for me, is a much different story though.

My nephrologist has become my main doctor. I've seen him more than any other doctor in my entire life, over the past two years. Even before that I didn't have a family doctor, ever. But now, I do, but I rarely, if ever, see him.
My neph is one busy guy, that's for sure, and is mostly inacessable to me, unless I have some kind of emergency. Even then I have to phone his office or the hospital, where he is on call several days a week, and wait for him to call me back. Luckily, that hasn't happened too often.
As for appointments, I usually wtite down the questions I have for him, long before the appointment, because it's hard for me to remember what I want to ask when I'm in his office.
This site is a gold mine of information, I must say, and it is a valuable resource for ideas and concepts that help me form my questions more reasonably.
The P/D clinic has an open line that I can call 5 days a week, too, and that is more useful to me at this point, than my neph.

love

It depends ..on which doctor i get ! Mine seems to rotate each visit. Having said that i dont give my doctor a choice , if i have questions to ask or things i want to talk about , i jolly well sit there till i get the answers!  Stand your ground and say you want to discuss something and dont be afraid to say if you dont understand. I had one 'clever' doctor, who in answer to my questions just quoted medical terms for everything , so i said would you mind putting it into plain english please, never had that problem with him again !

My dialysis center doctor is a complete waste of time to talk to. If I have questions I will call my trusted Kaiser nephrologist.

My Neph comes in to the clinic twice a week but does not spend too much time with each patient. My regular doctor I see 3 times a year for about 1 hour and is pretty through.

haha Thanks sluff..... I'm going to get Susie back for being a smarty pants all the time and forward this link....  :P

But it is true... my doctor wins the award for best doctor! .... he spends a good quality of time with us, and fits us in anytime we need it.... If it was not for him i wouldn't be in such good health that i am at now. He goes out of his way to help his patient and give them everything they require. I never worry about anything to do with my bloodwork, or having a transplant because i know how hard he will work to make sure everything goes good for his patients!! His the greatest.  :clap;

Hubby's neph is very busy - only one in town right now.  I still have found him accessible at the clinic.  He also has a PA who is very available  to answer questions and take care of prescription needs.  My biggest problem is getting hubby's other doctors to work with neph.  I also try to be informed about medications and his treatment and maintain control over the whole situation.

Otto's Dr's are great, but our daughters Neph is like talking to a brick wall  :banghead; so her Peds Dr always is the one who has to explain everything from the nephs appt!!!

My Neph sees me once ever 3 or 4 months. Getting an apointment in between those times is impossible.
Seems they are always too busy. When my 15 or 20 minutes is up, the Neph says " I'll be right back"
but he doesn't, instead a nurse comes in to finish up and escort me to the front desk .
