I had a problem with constipation and my kidney doctor gave me a prescription for Lactulose. Worked very well.

Personally I tend to ear a lot of fruit, I dislike most vegetables and since the rule is 5 fruit or vegetable a day I will eat seasonal fruits currently pears.
The fruits generally keep everything moving. Occasionally minor backups but some stool softener and fruit and the trains start running again.

... I eat every evening a tiny little portion of cooked brown lentils, which are washed and then soaked the night before in plenty of water & during next day and then - in the evening - washed thoroughly again and cooked for about 40 minutes in plenty of water to "leak out" as much potassium as possible ... This has worked well for me and has avoided any problems in that direction, plus it has allowed me to avoid taking any chemicals for it etc.
Good luck !

For the most part, Dulcolax seems to be the preferred laxative among doctors, mostly because it is stimulant-free where most others aren't. Even senna laxatives are stimulants. Dulcolax works well for me on the few times I need it. My GI tract generally has problems in the opposite way.....
Now, if you are REALLY constipated, ask your doctor about Magnesium Citrate, but use it with caution. Also, plan to stay around the house for the next 6-8 hours if you use it, and make sure there is a clear path to the bathroom!
