Title: Bone Loss
Post by: Whamo on November 16, 2018, 05:36:13 AM
How do we deal with bone loss if we're on dialysis?  Nutritional formulas include a lot of phosphorus for bone loss.  How does someone handle the harm but effect the good?  I have expect to see my bones start breaking at the slightest touch.  Has anyone dealt with this successfully?

Prolia is a shot every six months.  It is supposed to help stop bone loss.  You will need to see an Endocrinologist to get the shot.  Your Nephrologist may have to refer you.  Your Nephrologist also plays a big part in ordering labs other than monthly labs.  You have to keep your calcium higher than normal and V-D higher than normal.

Right now my Nephrologist is my stumbling block.  She won't order my labs for dialysis to take them.  So I would have to go somewhere every week and get blood out of my hand.  Not sure what I'm going to do.  She ordered them for a year and a half and now "it is not her job"!

Anyway I just had a bone density test and it WAS helping.

You still need phosphorous. They just want to be aware that you cannot be eating tons of food with phosphorous. Then it will build up and harder to get rid of.  You should have been given a calcium pill prescription or buy it over the counter.  Dialysis does lower your calcium.

The patients at my clinic that I've observed with extreme bone issues have been those with uncontrolled high PTH. When the PTH goes uncontrolled the body will scavenge calcium from your bones and eventually there are fracture problems. I chose to have my parathyroid glands removed during my second year of dialysis due to high uncontrollable PTH and the direction I feared that going.

My pTh used to run 1200 until we made adjustments to my Sensipar and two forms of Vit D.  We have had to cut back some on all as my pTh has fallen too low.

Bone density test already show some loss.  I don't know yet how much, or if it is enough to mess with as they haven't called me back and it has been several months, almost a year.

I'm told weight bearing exercise if possible is helpful.  I don't do that.

I stay too busy running, my mouth, jumping, to conclusions.  You know, normal Guy stuff.

I suffered from bone loss around age 18 im 23 now. Phos and pth were out of control. Doctors thought i wasnt eating right turns out it was my overactive parathyroid gland. There were days i couldn't walk, calcium deposits were in my hips so i couldn't sleep on my side. And i felt weak all the time. Had to stay in the hospital for some time until i decided to get a feeding tube. I used it for a year and got my health back on track. I didnt think my bones would affect me that much. It saddens me when i think about even half the stuff i endured.
