Thanks for sharing this article, Cassandra, there were things in there I never knew, and I hope it leads to better, more balanced eating guidelines in the future.

I raise a toast to a future when it's OK for dialysis patients to eat lots of healthy fruits and veggies.  The "official" diet is one of the least healthy diets ever conceived.

One thing about the article I didn't understand: It suggested that HD patients are routinely told to avoid potassium-rich plant-based foods even if their potassium blood levels are fine. But in my experience, our nephrologist and dietitian only adjust our diet when the monthly bloodwork shows a trend or problem, and they don't say, "avoid bananas", they just give a list of foods that are rich in some nutrient and leave us to choose. Do most HD patients get restricted regardless of their bloodwork?

Restricted to me does not mean to avoid at all costs.  I see it as a guide.  Different strokes and all that jazz.  Personally, I do not think that abstaining totally from a food or drink that I really like is a good idea.  Reason being that a taste or a sip of something I really want is far better than satisfying a craving by going overboard when I just can't stand it anymore.
