Title: Severe pain during drain? (CCPD)
Post by: gothamfan on August 12, 2017, 08:44:20 PM
I always experience severe pain during my drain cycles on home dialysis ? I don't mean discomfort because I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this is so painful that I struggle to breathe.

It is a stabbing pain in my peritoneal cavity and in my lower sternum area. Probably an 8/10 on the pain scale.

The only thing I have issues with elevation is my phosphorus which is at 7.7 right now.

Any ideas?

If you have a fever call your Nurse.  You don't want an infection.

Please go introduce yourself if you haven't already.

Have you tried manually draining into a drain bag?  It sounds like your cycler is pulling too much out.

Is your cycler set to Tidal mode? Tidal leaves a few hundred ml in at the end of each drain except the final drain where it pulls it all back out plus any UF it is able to pull. It helped me tremendously with drain pain when I started PD 4 years ago.

I always had pain near the end of my drains, but it was manageable because it only lasted a few minutes. If you have pain that severe during the entire drain, you need to have a sample tested for infection.  Even if you don't have any symptoms of infection, you could have one.  I had a severe fungal infection that made it impossible for me to do PD anymore, with no fever, chills, cloudy fluid, or any unwell feeling.  All I had was severe pain while draining, to a point where I would let the machine pull 50cc  then take a break for a few minutes. It took over an hour to do what would normally be a 15 minute drain.
