Title: The Annual Flu Shot Blues
Post by: PrimeTimer on October 04, 2016, 05:50:38 PM
Hubby was given his annual flu shot at dialysis the other day. As usual, he spent a couple days aching, feeling a little nauseated and tired. We call it the "flu shot blues". He said some patients at his center turned it down but I thought all dialysis patients were to have the flu shot. I guess going thru the flu shot blues is better than ending up hospitalized with the flu, I think that would be much harder on my husband. Glad he lets them give him the shot but feel bad that he suffers the side effects. He wasn't alone with it tho...I had to see my own doc for a checkup the other day and while there, had a terrible asthma attack. They gave me a steroid shot in the tushie and for the next couple days I suffered side effects so hubby and I both went thru "the blues" at the same time. Glad that's over with!  :stressed;

Our flu shots are scheduled for our next round of appointments, but I got the pneumonia shot a week ago and it knocked me out of commission for a weekend. Better than getting the actual illness, though!

I swear, since starting the D I get EVERY non-lifethreatening side effect offered with a new medication. Never used to bother me at all.

I had both shots one fall and about two months later I came down with the flu and pneumonia at the same time.  They told me they were different strains than the shots that I had received.  That it was luck of the draw that the shots did not work.  I still get my shots every year.

I got my flu shot at Monday's monthly Clinic.   I get my shot every year.

There is something like over 11 THOUSAND different strains of colds and flu's.  The annual shot is only a few of the more likely strains the Dr's 'think' may be common this year.   No one knows for sure so it is esily possible for people to still catch a different strain and get sick.

Long ago I read a bookk titled 'The Coffin Cure'.  sort of a humor about a Dr Coffin that created a flu shot that totall eradicated ALL colds and flu's.  Everyone got the cure.   The problem was that since we no longer had any type of 'cold' our sense of smell fully recovered and became so acute that normal everyday smells were so intense were were sickened.  Enough complaints and the good Dr was begged to create a cold to dull our senses.   He did.   The cold ws so bad everyone then wanted a cure.    Repeat the cycle.  It was hilarious.

Moral of the story.   Don't F### with Mother Nature.

I had mine only recently and my arm still hurts a bit...
When starting with my dialysis-treatment, I also started to have flu-jabs in order to protect myself
from the "coughs and sneezes" in the centre and I hope it all helps.  8)

Had my 6 month with my Primary Dr today.  Same O same O, except she sked me when was my last colonoscopy.  I should have lied.  She put me in for another.

To add insult to injury, I was stupid enough to ask about the shingles shot.  Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut.   She gave it to me.

When will I ever learn to shut up?

They are giving them out next week, and if you don't want one ok, but they are insisting that without the flu shot either you must wear a mask or go to the isolation room.  The bans are for the entire flu season.  I get my shot every year.  By the way it's just not to protect the other patients from you the mask protects you from them.

I'll probably ask about it next week.  Last year was the first year we got them for free.  Before that, unless you were over age 65, under age 5, were pregnant, native, or a health care worker, you had to go to a clinic, make an appointment, and pay for it.  Since I don't fit any of that criteria, I had to find a way to a clinic, cuz they were 8am-4pm, and my mom works 7:30am to 4pm, and no weekend clinics.  It was such a pain in the butt, I thought about not getting it.  We'll see what their plan is for this year.

My father figured he was too old for the colonoscopy but got one anyhow.   It saved his life.

They started making the rounds at hemo a couple of weeks ago. Our nurse was sweet about it and apologized profusely for the "large" needles the clinic was using.  They were 27s. She was being sincere.  I laughed and laughed and laughed, and it was a walk in the park compared to my everyday 15s!

Good to be done for the year.  I'm halfway done with the optional hep b shots and those leave a bruise!

They gave us flu shots at the end of September.  One guy refused but he goes to AZ in the winter anyway.

The CDC just recommended a mid to late October shot because the shots produce antibodies that become less effective by the end of flu season.

I got the flu shot on Monday so far just tired, but that is my usual state of being lately.  No real reactions yet.
