Title: Organ awareness ride?
Post by: lola on April 05, 2007, 12:28:00 PM
OK so i'm thinking of ways to bring attention to the need of organ donor's and i came up with an idea i wanted to share and see what you think! My husband Otto is 36 and loves to be out on his klr 650 and ride with other people, soooo i thought hey what about putting together a" ride for awarness" i'd put up fliers everywhere and contact local media to get as much publisitie as possible. Everybody could wear something Green, and help spread the word. Like i said it's an idea that i wanted feedback on. (sluff) hope you'd join so i finally get to meet you. Like i said when i joined this form finding a kidney for not just my husband but everybody here has become a mission for me and i have the big mouth to get it done!!!! thanks and keep on :)  Amy

Would it be possible to have members make their own groups in their own states and parts of the world?   :P

I will call Trina and see if we can get special IHD t-shirts made up for any member or spouse who would take part in this. The Harley logo IHD Donor shirt would be perfect only maybe change the color? Any Input?  Just an idea.

I need to think about this idea a bit more but I thought it might be possible to arrange a benefit/awareness day at Virginia International Raceway.  Riders could be sponsored and collect donations for number of laps completed in which the money could be used for any number of things.  It might draw some productive attention being that VIR is widely know in the racing world.  Anyway, it's just a thought for now.  I will continue to brainstorm in the meantime.

I was thinking of having tshirts made for me and my husband in green. It would be soooooo cool to get other states involved and all ride on the same day since many are unable to come to Minnesota i'm hoping to do it end of June or in  July and have a rain date set too. Like i said b-4 i want to ge news coverage and get the message out. :)

So i talked to one of my husband's bosses who is a harley man and he wants to put fliers up at all his biker hangout's he said they love to support good causes, so it's looking like we could have quite a few bikes. Now i just need to set up the route, we're looking at June 29th for the ride date but that's not 100% yet.

How about a poker run?  It's a good way to get sponsors.  If the bikers have to stop to pick up a card at a business, you can usually get the business to chip in some cash towards organizing the event.  There are a couple of charity runs up here in the winter that do that - only on snowmobile, of course!

I wasn't really looking to raise money because sometimes people think it's to much work to get out and raise it, i was thinking of just a day out in the sun on the road with the bike and having a ton of people out there with me to get the word out about the need for organ donor's and being a "living donor". Maybe if this goes well it could become something to do every year and raise money to donate to a cause related to organ donations??? I don't know like i said this was something i just thought of and now our family and friends think it'll be a cool way to spread the word. I've started leaving messages at media outlet's to see about following our family's journey and doing this ride to make people aware. :thx;

I gottcha (guess I was a bit over ambitious at the time).  Please allow me to start over.

I would love to do something like that.  Anything to bring a greater awareness :2thumbsup;.  Is this something you want to do nationwide?

I personally think it would be sooooooo cool to know that on the same day other people in other state's are doing the same thing and then we could all talk about it here!!! Knowing i helped put an Idea in others heads about organ awareness would make me feel like like I'm finally putting my big mouth to some good use!!!! :grouphug;

I'm trying to get my house sold and moving, but if I get through the move, I might be able to help organize a ride. I won't know that many people, but my friend owns a cycle shop, and maybe we can put it together.

Most taverns will pay $25 to $35 to have your group stop at there bar.  I have arranged many parties and many poker runs through the years, in fact I'm working on 1 now for July 21st here and June 10th in 2008.

Have to start small so the general business population gets used to seeing the bikes every year then wham you start asking for donations through sponsorship and eventually it can become a Nationwide event.

There have been organ donatioin awareness campaigns for decades, and yet the rate of organ donation has remained constant, even though the need for donated organs is increasing.  I surveyed the nurses at my dialysis center, all of whom, I assume, are aware of the need for kidney donation, and I found that the majority had not signed their donor cards.  The most common reason they gave me for not doing so?  They "had never thought of it"!!  If dialysis nurses never think of it, what good will it do if the average citizen sees an organ donation poster at a parade?  The problem is not awareness, but the simple fact that people do not care about other people.

Government policies when it comes to organ transplants are also nothing short of insane.  Why is it against the law for me to burn leaves on my lawn in the fall because this will harm my neighbors by polluting the air, but perfectly legal for me to have my organs buried in the cemetery to feed the worms when I die rather than being used to save human lives?

There have been organ donatioin awareness campaigns for decades, and yet the rate of organ donation has remained constant, even though the need for donated organs is increasing.

What do you think the trend would be if nobody participated in organ donor awareness?

The problem is not awareness, but the simple fact that people do not care about other people.

Not unless there is something in it for them.  We should allow some compensation/credit for donors.

Because the government is quick to say what one can not do and not so fast to say what one has to do.  It seems to me, although we have to wear seatbelts (in the U.S.) and pay taxes and such, there are many more things we "can't" do then there are things we "must" do.

It's free this year and yes there will be potty and bev breaks we will only be gone a couple hours but then hoping to go ride longer on another route just for fun with whoever. Otto's boss wants to hit bars but since we may have TV crews following we decided to wait till later for that. Sluff i wish my house was bigger I'd say just stay here but you'd have to lay with the dog sorry. Next year I'm looking at getting sponsors so it can be a bigger event but i have to start somewhere. I have said since joining I have to do something and I try to keep my word :beer1;

I'll talk to some people and try to see if there's potential for next year. Way to go, Lola!!! I was having problems getting Cub to give me a $25 gift card to help out with expenses. She will set everything up and take down she has people who wanted to help!!!!! I'm still in shock over how people have been so great. Now I don't need to be so stressed about how much I spend on food and not having the money for bills and of course VEGAS. :yahoo; :yahoo;

Just heard from the PR director for clear channel ( they run 7 diffrent radio stations in MN) they have the more popular stations. Well on Sunday mornings they run ads and talk about diffrent organizations trying to do diffrent things in the state and there's a charge, but because I'm doing this all on my own and expenses are coming out of my own pocket they are going to talk about the ride for FREE and next year wants to have at least a months notice so they can talk about it every Sunday :yahoo; :yahoo; now if only I would here from Oprah hehehe

Even in the rain it sounds like it was fun.  So how did you get this all started, in case some of us want to do something similar?  Maybe a walk or a car drive.

Glad you still had a turnout even with the rain.  It was for a good cause and those that still participated even with the rain should be congratulated.

I got back home around 3pm today.

The ride was very well organized and more than 25 people arrived to help support the cause. I have put a lot of rides together and for the first one the support was outstanding.

We had a fantastic time in Minnesota despite the weather. We left home around one in the afternoon on Friday and arrived about two hours west of Lola's around 10pm visiting one of my Brothers in Richmond MN. The next morning we woke up early to head back for the ride, arriving in Coon Rapids around 9:30 am. I had to follow my nose until I smelled all the crispy cremes. Guess what? I found them. First person to meet me was Otto asking if I was Sluff. We parked our bikes under the overhang and before we were even off the bikes it started to rain cats and dogs. All of a sudden this lady wearing a green T shirt walked over to me with this little bag with a Raspberry filled Crispe creme. What a treat that was. We visited the rest of the day, after the event we helped cleanup, earning a Steak dinner at Texas Roadhouse later that evening, another fantastic treat. Rather than head back to Wisconsin at 11pm we were invited to stay at Lola's mothers house so we accepted, what a beautiful home and they are all beautiful people. The hospitality was awesome, the new found friendships priceless.
