OK so i'm thinking of ways to bring attention to the need of organ donor's and i came up with an idea i wanted to share and see what you think! My husband Otto is 36 and loves to be out on his klr 650 and ride with other people, soooo i thought hey what about putting together a" ride for awarness" i'd put up fliers everywhere and contact local media to get as much publisitie as possible. Everybody could wear something Green, and help spread the word. Like i said it's an idea that i wanted feedback on. (sluff) hope you'd join so i finally get to meet you. Like i said when i joined this form finding a kidney for not just my husband but everybody here has become a mission for me and i have the big mouth to get it done!!!! thanks and keep on :) Amy

That would be Awesome Amy, Damn, i wish i had the courage to ride a bike, i mean they are sweet to look at and admire but i am scared to death to actually ride on one :-\ I know we have some Motorcycle Enthusiast up in here, hopefully they will join in, right SLUFF?? :P :P Good Luck with this and please do keep us posted. :2thumbsup;
-
Iwould love to join you , but i'm in the UK , so it's a bit far to come !!! , but great idea :2thumbsup;
-
I would be a part of it if circumstances allow me to. It's a great thought for sure! Good for you. 8)
-
Would it be possible to have members make their own groups in their own states and parts of the world? :P

Now thats thinking BIG! Just let me know what I could do. I really am not sure about being an organizer but you never know, I might be able to be persuaded.
-
Count me in depending when where. :thumbup;
-
I will call Trina and see if we can get special IHD t-shirts made up for any member or spouse who would take part in this. The Harley logo IHD Donor shirt would be perfect only maybe change the color? Any Input? Just an idea.
-
I need to think about this idea a bit more but I thought it might be possible to arrange a benefit/awareness day at Virginia International Raceway. Riders could be sponsored and collect donations for number of laps completed in which the money could be used for any number of things. It might draw some productive attention being that VIR is widely know in the racing world. Anyway, it's just a thought for now. I will continue to brainstorm in the meantime.
-
I was thinking of having tshirts made for me and my husband in green. It would be soooooo cool to get other states involved and all ride on the same day since many are unable to come to Minnesota i'm hoping to do it end of June or in July and have a rain date set too. Like i said b-4 i want to ge news coverage and get the message out. :)
-
Lola, this is an awesome idea and from the looks of it, and hopefully from just what i've read here, it just might be a huge success. Good Job :2thumbsup; :clap;

Here's one group that did a ride, you could get some tips on organizing from them http://www.med.umich.edu/opm/newspage/2005/motorcycle.htm

So i talked to one of my husband's bosses who is a harley man and he wants to put fliers up at all his biker hangout's he said they love to support good causes, so it's looking like we could have quite a few bikes. Now i just need to set up the route, we're looking at June 29th for the ride date but that's not 100% yet.
-
How about a poker run? It's a good way to get sponsors. If the bikers have to stop to pick up a card at a business, you can usually get the business to chip in some cash towards organizing the event. There are a couple of charity runs up here in the winter that do that - only on snowmobile, of course!
-
I wasn't really looking to raise money because sometimes people think it's to much work to get out and raise it, i was thinking of just a day out in the sun on the road with the bike and having a ton of people out there with me to get the word out about the need for organ donor's and being a "living donor". Maybe if this goes well it could become something to do every year and raise money to donate to a cause related to organ donations??? I don't know like i said this was something i just thought of and now our family and friends think it'll be a cool way to spread the word. I've started leaving messages at media outlet's to see about following our family's journey and doing this ride to make people aware. :thx;
-
I gottcha (guess I was a bit over ambitious at the time). Please allow me to start over.
I would love to do something like that. Anything to bring a greater awareness :2thumbsup;. Is this something you want to do nationwide?
-
I personally think it would be sooooooo cool to know that on the same day other people in other state's are doing the same thing and then we could all talk about it here!!! Knowing i helped put an Idea in others heads about organ awareness would make me feel like like I'm finally putting my big mouth to some good use!!!! :grouphug;

I'm trying to get my house sold and moving, but if I get through the move, I might be able to help organize a ride. I won't know that many people, but my friend owns a cycle shop, and maybe we can put it together.
-
Most taverns will pay $25 to $35 to have your group stop at there bar. I have arranged many parties and many poker runs through the years, in fact I'm working on 1 now for July 21st here and June 10th in 2008.
Have to start small so the general business population gets used to seeing the bikes every year then wham you start asking for donations through sponsorship and eventually it can become a Nationwide event.
-
Sheeeit, i'd pay to have all them bikers just drive by my house, man oh man :P :P
-
Sheeeit.......goofynina.......gilr, we don't "drive", we RIDE 8)

I'll try to make that.

There have been organ donatioin awareness campaigns for decades, and yet the rate of organ donation has remained constant, even though the need for donated organs is increasing. I surveyed the nurses at my dialysis center, all of whom, I assume, are aware of the need for kidney donation, and I found that the majority had not signed their donor cards. The most common reason they gave me for not doing so? They "had never thought of it"!! If dialysis nurses never think of it, what good will it do if the average citizen sees an organ donation poster at a parade? The problem is not awareness, but the simple fact that people do not care about other people.
Government policies when it comes to organ transplants are also nothing short of insane. Why is it against the law for me to burn leaves on my lawn in the fall because this will harm my neighbors by polluting the air, but perfectly legal for me to have my organs buried in the cemetery to feed the worms when I die rather than being used to save human lives?
-
Just got off the phone with NKF and they are sending me info to hand out to people who turn out for this ride, they said they are going to look into putting it on there site(no promises) but they will try!!! Sluff i really hope you can make it!!!

What do you think the trend would be if nobody participated in organ donor awareness?

Not unless there is something in it for them. We should allow some compensation/credit for donors.

Because the government is quick to say what one can not do and not so fast to say what one has to do. It seems to me, although we have to wear seatbelts (in the U.S.) and pay taxes and such, there are many more things we "can't" do then there are things we "must" do.

Amy,
Do you have more info, or perhaps a flyer? I am happy to help promote your ride - just let me know the details.
Thanks,
Karol
-
Me and Christy will be there. I need more information too. Where are we meeting? I will be headed your direction on Friday night and staying in a motel on the Wisconsin side near LaCrosse. Then Saturday heading into Minnesota early to make the ride but then I need to be home Saturday night.
-
Sluff can't wait to See ya :2thumbsup; I just got a packet from the NKF with organ donor cards so hopefully we'll get some people to sign up.
-
I ordered two tshirts to wear that Epoman designed.
-
:2thumbsup;
-
What is the cost? Are there some stops along the way? Just curious.
-
It's free this year and yes there will be potty and bev breaks we will only be gone a couple hours but then hoping to go ride longer on another route just for fun with whoever. Otto's boss wants to hit bars but since we may have TV crews following we decided to wait till later for that. Sluff i wish my house was bigger I'd say just stay here but you'd have to lay with the dog sorry. Next year I'm looking at getting sponsors so it can be a bigger event but i have to start somewhere. I have said since joining I have to do something and I try to keep my word :beer1;

I have accommodations if I need them, I have a Brother who will probably go on the ride with us lives 75 miles west of you. I need to be back Saturday evening because I have to pick up someone Sunday Morning Up in northern Wisconsin. I appreciate your intentions, don't feel bad.
-
Darn, I just found this thread today. If I had more time, I would see about trying to get something going in this area (north metro Atlanta). I'll talk to some people and try to see if there's potential for next year. Way to go, Lola!!! Thank you from every one of us currently waiting for a kidney (or any other organ) for doing this! :clap;
-
:yahoo; Fingers crossed everyone, just got off the phone with Fox 9 news they are pitching a story idea on our family and the Organ Donation Awareness Ride in the AM with producers if they say yes they'll be here tommorrow to interview us and promote the ride, the guy also said they'll film the ride. He's 99.9% sure they will go for the the Idea since we've had 7 transplant's betwen 4 siblings and my husband will make they 8th. :bandance; :bandance; :bandance;

You'll have to try and get ihatedialysis.com included somehow if you can.
-
I've already thought of that since it got me to meet some amazing friends and this ride is not just about my (machado)family but my IHD family to. I'm waiting to hear if they'll be here today, will let you know.
-
The story is a go :yahoo; they can't film today since there was a shooting and a gangbanger was shot WTF like that's new? So they will call either Wends or Thurs afternoon to come and do the story.

Hey Lola,
Great coverage! I noticed they have the Hitching Post's website address shown in the video - it would be a good idea if they added your event to their calendar, if they are willing. http://hponline.com/event_calendar.asp?sid=07891809X7K19K2007J4I14I54JPMQ571R0&date=8%2F19%2F2007

Just got off the phone with the most amazing person, her husband is Otto's boss and when she found out we were going to have food before and after the ride she got on the phone and found people to donate EVERYTHING :bow; :bow;. I was having problems getting Cub to give me a $25 gift card to help out with expenses. She will set everything up and take down she has people who wanted to help!!!!! I'm still in shock over how people have been so great. Now I don't need to be so stressed about how much I spend on food and not having the money for bills and of course VEGAS. :yahoo; :yahoo;
-
Things have their way of working out don't they?
-
That is just great!
-
Some people just come out of the woodwork for a good cause! Hurray.
-
Just heard from the PR director for clear channel ( they run 7 diffrent radio stations in MN) they have the more popular stations. Well on Sunday mornings they run ads and talk about diffrent organizations trying to do diffrent things in the state and there's a charge, but because I'm doing this all on my own and expenses are coming out of my own pocket they are going to talk about the ride for FREE and next year wants to have at least a months notice so they can talk about it every Sunday :yahoo; :yahoo; now if only I would here from Oprah hehehe

:thumbup; :thumbup; Great job, lola!! Thanks for all your hard work!
-
Even in the rain it sounds like it was fun. So how did you get this all started, in case some of us want to do something similar? Maybe a walk or a car drive.
-
Glad you still had a turnout even with the rain. It was for a good cause and those that still participated even with the rain should be congratulated.
-
I got back home around 3pm today.
The ride was very well organized and more than 25 people arrived to help support the cause. I have put a lot of rides together and for the first one the support was outstanding.
We had a fantastic time in Minnesota despite the weather. We left home around one in the afternoon on Friday and arrived about two hours west of Lola's around 10pm visiting one of my Brothers in Richmond MN. The next morning we woke up early to head back for the ride, arriving in Coon Rapids around 9:30 am. I had to follow my nose until I smelled all the crispy cremes. Guess what? I found them. First person to meet me was Otto asking if I was Sluff. We parked our bikes under the overhang and before we were even off the bikes it started to rain cats and dogs. All of a sudden this lady wearing a green T shirt walked over to me with this little bag with a Raspberry filled Crispe creme. What a treat that was. We visited the rest of the day, after the event we helped cleanup, earning a Steak dinner at Texas Roadhouse later that evening, another fantastic treat. Rather than head back to Wisconsin at 11pm we were invited to stay at Lola's mothers house so we accepted, what a beautiful home and they are all beautiful people. The hospitality was awesome, the new found friendships priceless.
-
So glad to hear it all went well and you had a safe trip. :yahoo; And you didnt mention WHO this lady was who brought you over that Raspberry doughnut, i am hoping it was Lola, lol, (your not supposed to take stuff from strangers ya know) :P ;)
-
:oops; it was Lola. She has the pictures too.
-
job well done lola great you could support it sluff :2thumbsup;
