Title: Talker's find on what doctors prefer, when faced with crisis!
Post by: talker on July 27, 2015, 09:40:05 AM
Found this article quite interesting.

We turn to doctors to save our lives -- to heal us, repair us, and keep us healthy.
But when it comes to the critical question of what to do when death is at hand, there seems to be a gap between what we want doctors to do for us, and what doctors want done for themselves.

The question was asked of Doctors, If YOU were the patient with an irreversible brain injury without otherwise terminal illness, would you elect life sustaining treatment?

Sadly, I have to agree with the Dr's on this one.

This may be considered a no-brainer (pun not intended) but seriously, I would like this small study greatly expanded to include many different illnesses and injuries, so to get a far better understanding of how the Dr's opinions may be, whether the same or different from mine.

When this was published in 2013 on other sites it was more clear that the survey relates to very close to end of life decisions.  So by saying they would skip dialysis its only in cases where they are basically on life support already.  Its not a Dr saying as a soon to be stable patient they would skip dialysis...  That's shown on the caption of the chart: Preferences of physician-participants for treatment given a scenario of irreversible brain injury without terminal illness.

The irreversible brain injury issue presents an interesting theological question - if you lose your memory and faculties due to brain injury or disease, will he reach out with his noodly appendage and restore them from backup in your afterlife?
