Title: It's me needlephobic I'm back
Post by: needlephobic on October 19, 2014, 03:22:12 PM
Finally back on here for days was trying to remember my password grrrrrrrrrrrr. Anyway I'm still kicking got the best D center and the best Neph anyone could hope for. Yes still afraid of them darn needles and still going to counseling on that fear. I even have a signed contract saying they can't stick me until I am ready and only under my condition or councilor. It is so good to be in charge of my treatment and have my Neph backing me up.  :clap; :clap; :bandance;  :bandance;

Great to hear from you, needlephobic! Glad to hear you have a good center and a Neph that will work with you on your phobia. Being in control makes it all a little easier to take - at least it does for me.

I was wondering about you. Someone talked about a fear of needles and I wondered if you had conquered it. It sounds like you're doing ok. Good nephs are worth their weight in gold.

Sounds like you are in good hands, needlephobic. Helps to surround yourself with those willing to be supportive. I know it's not the same but, when I was a young dental assistant I was warned by other staff about a patient who gagged terribly while having dental xrays taken. She couldn't help it. I don't know why I thought of it but I ended up demonstrating to her what I needed to do, going so far as putting some dental film inside my own mouth and holding it with a finger. I showed her the angle in which it would need to be held and asked if she thought she could do that. She said she was willing to give it a try. So I scrubbed up, got out some clean film and handed it to her with a mirror. Sure enough, she was able to hold the dental film in place while I snapped the xray  -and she didn't gag. I'm not saying you should learn to cannulate yourself, that's up to you and you only but, my point in telling you this story is that it helps to be with people who try to understand your situation and lend their support. Sounds like your center and neph are doing that and it obviously started by being your own advocate. Seems like it was a very good move on your part. Keep it up and it may just lead to even bigger and better things!

Hello needlephobic,
I was thinking of you recently because I am very much of a needlephobic myself...
All my life I was unable to look at any needles, unable to handle them
and I was unable to watch a nurse with a needle "coming for my blood" etc., it was just simply dreadful for me...
...But then things changed at an instant when I needed urgently my regular weekly Epo-injections... regularly...
and we are going here through a very cold autumn where practically everyone is sniffing and coughing,
especially some of the patients waiting in medical surgeries or hospitals...
That gave me the choice... either to inject my weekly Epo-injection myself at home or wait for the nurse
to inject my Epo at the surgery, whilst waiting there and facing the sniffing and coughing disasters
who are also waiting there to be seen eventually by a nurse or a doctor...
... I then had a very serious talk with myself and convinced myself that it is much saver for my future to face the music
and learn to give myself my weekly Epo-injections at home ... and it works surprisingly well...
... Of course, I have to "brace myself" every time beforehand for a little while, but then I can do it ... every time..
...Fortunately my mental preparation time gets shorter every time...
I wish you good luck because I do understand how very difficult it is !
... I can see, that you are getting there slowly yourself and I am very glad for you!
I send you my best wishes and good luck from Kristina.

P.S. I am not eligible for a transplant before December 2014 because of former cancer-issues
and I am still  pre-dialysis ... just about "hanging on" with my very little natural kidney function left...
... my hope is "to hang on" and remain pre-dialysis until my transplant without needing any dialysis...
... which might be a bit of a "tall order" because of my very little natural kidney function left,
but I give it my very best with my very strict (and boring) vegetarian diet and drinking water ...
