Title: Hungry during/after dialysis
Post by: lmden on April 03, 2014, 02:27:33 AM
I'm new to this dialysis stuff, im on hemodialysis 3 times a week for 4 hours. Im not sure if its just me but after about 3 hours i am absolutely starving and feel like i am going to pass out? Luckily my unit feed me my dinner but then once i am off and i get home, i eat another full meal?

Is this a side effect of the dialysis and a lot of people get this or is it just me?

It seems to be very individual. Some are starving. I was always nauseated. I see no problem with eating if you're hungry after. Just don't undo all the work you just did at dialysis. Don't make your meal too high in potassium or phosphorus.

I would say it is failry common.

dialysis sucks protein and other things out of the system, so often the body craves to replace specially protein.. hence you can be hungry.

it is variable though. Some feel too drained to have an appetite for example.

I eat during dialysis, usually an apple or energy bar and a small pack of hummus from Costco.  Additionally when I get home I have to eat.  Normally I can skip meals w little hunger  but not after dialysis.

When I first started dialysis I rarely felt hungry during my treatments. Now a year and a half later I feel starving after about 3 hours even if I eat before I go in.

Aloha, yes I get hungry during my sessions, but I do 6 days at 3 hours so I can wait till it's over to go home to ear.  I carry some hard candy in my bag and if I get hungry I find sucking on the candy doesn't make me as hungry.  While I was on vacation back home in Hawaii and going to the clinic there, they allowed people to bring in snacks, I seen people bring in starbucks coffee, popcorn and cookies.
