Title: Exercising/working out
Post by: rayray73 on March 14, 2014, 03:18:37 PM
Do any of you keep up with regular exercises or go to the gym?

I used to go to the gym often several times a week, but now the classes that involves using mainly your strength or all around fitness classes...is way too exhausting for me. I regret going to a class that tested your entire fitness levels today. I'm anemic as well, so it didn't make it any better. I stopped several times throughout the workout to catch my breath. I'm just going to stick to cardio based workouts from now on, or just ride my skateboard.

Hi rayray73,

By the way, welcome to our community!
:beer1;

A number of us do exercise, with of course our nephrologist's approval.
It may take a little while to build up the strength and endurance.

Many factors including length of dialysis treatment (more is better),
diet (enough calories and protein) and hemoglobin level can affect
you ability to exercise regularly.

Here are some previous IHD discussion threads about exercise:

I worked out almost every week day when I was doing dialysis. I did cardio and moderate resistance for my routine. I helped me stay in shape and I think it really helped me with my recovery from surgery.

Walking is always good exercise. You can pick your own pace and it won't hurt your fistula or other access. Then as you get stronger you can try other things.
