Hi all, I have been on dialysis now for 2 months and am feeling pretty good so far.
I had my appointment with my coordinator last week, and she told me that I should be doing some exercise.
I would like to know if there is anyone in here that would like to join me in this.
We can post when we do our exercises , and what we did.
I think that this would make me more apt to continue.
So I will start.
kimcanada - sunday march12 - walked 2 miles (walking video)
EDITED: Thread moved to proper section: "Dialysis: Diet & Recipes" - Bajanne Moderator
-
I rode to work today, it's 12 miles. I still need to ride home. :banghead;
Many people live and maintain an active life on dialysis. I encourage everyone to do some form of exercise. Start slow and increase the intensity.
-
12 miles! :yahoo;
wow thats alot, is it hilly?
-
I will try to join you every day.
-
Awesome idea, I think other people joining in helps make me more prone to sticking with it as I dont want to let anyone down. I been cleaning the whole house today, so far, been up and down the stairs who knows how many times, chasing my kids all over, doing laundry, vaccuming... thats exercise... lol. I dont know what it is in miles but lemme just say im tired and im only half way done. :P
-
Excellent Kitkat and Angela
I will post after I do my walk tonight and can't wait to see how you two are doing!
Kim
-
:clap; Great idea Kimcanada,
Last week I went to my first Tap dance lesson (I can hear you laughing :rofl; :rofl;) It is all mums so I didn't feel too out of place.
There was even an 81 yrold lady and boy was she good. It was a great work out even though I felt as if I had two left feet!
Luckily I am able to laugh at myself :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :yahoo;
-
now that the weather is getting nicer i'll start walking again. at one point i was up to 10 miles. don't know if i'll get that way again, but we'll see. in june the denver botanical gardens is going to be doing tai chi lessons. for free i can get up at 6:30 and drive over there. should be nice.
-
Great idea.
I took my dog for a mile walk today. The weather in Northern Indiana is finally starting to break. In the high 40's today.
-
kimcanada - Monday March12 - walked 2 miles (walking video) with sister.
(I am going do do this till I feel comfortable to move to something more intense) :)
-
30 minutes on my glider today. 20 yesterday (I started coughing and gave up!). But tomorrow it's back to dialysis, and I can't find the energy to much of anything when I come home from that. I need to get my time up to an hour to account for the 3 days a week I'm NOT exercising.
-
Lets not and say we did. :thumbup;
-
jbeany
I am just doing this on the days I am not in dialsys also, I am a T,T,S
Thats why its better if we do this in here, everyone else I know is 5 days or 6 days a week exercising, and I feel like I am not doing enough, but really we are doing enough for what we do on the other days RIGHT :)
Kim
-
Well, shoot. Yesterday I did not exercise. Early dialysis wiped me out right into a nap. Geez I hate how I feel sometimes after dialysis.
Today I am prepping for colonoscopy so we shall see what happens after that one!
-
Hi all, well finally spring is coming to Nova Scotia,
Sister and I walked for 3 miles tonight after dialysis, this was rather amazing usually my guts feel very tingly.
Kitkatz i hope that all went well, let us know :)
Kim
-
Took the dog for a mile walk. The weather was absolutely beautiful today....high 60's .... :clap;
Joanna
-
went walking today too, just not that far
-
Okay, okay - I'm getting off the computer and going right now! Really!
-
Well, I DID walk around a little bit today, we'll start with that! Man, it's been hard this year,
but now that spring is FINALLY here, that'll help!
-
This is a good idea ... mind if I join you guys? I have been trying to walk 30 minutes on the treadmill. Maybe not every day, but 5 days a week. My best time is in the morning after breakfast. I plug in my iPod and watch the Today show. And sometimes my kittycat watches me from her cat tower, like, "You idiot, why are you working so hard when you should be petting ME?"
-
My cat doesn't like my exercise machine, either. She runs when I set it up, then creeps back in the room and yowls while I'm on it. It must squeak in a frequency that bugs her.
35 minutes today - now I'm going to clean house. That counts, too, right?
-
Welcome Lee Anne......I checked out your recipe site....very nice. I'm pre-dialysis, but I'm trying to limit my protein and just eat healthy. Would love to lose about 70 lbs. :banghead;
Today I took my dog for a mile walk. I tried to sped up my pace at little to get my heart a goin'.
I should clean my house, but I think I might just take a nap instead. :lol;
Joanna
-
Well I did my 2 mile video today, I think that we all are doing good, I think I need a dog to walk.
Kim
-
I did my video again, I was so tired today, Fridays i usually am.
So who else did something, don't lose steam on me now!
Kim
-
This thread has got me motivated. I rode a stationary bike today for 20 minutes, did some arms with 5lb weights, and even tried some sit ups on my exercise ball.........well alright, I only did 5. but its a start ;D
kelli
-
and even tried some sit ups on my exercise ball.........well alright, I only did 5. but its a start
:rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;
Well I have to tell ya that made me LOL!!!
-
I did 20 minutes today - then had to get off and run to town before the post office and pharmacy closed. I also did 3 loads of laundry, the dishes, packaged and mailed a couple of presents, and decluttered the living room. It may not be exercise, but it sure feels like it!
-
I was busy today......so only took the dog for a 20 minute walk. I did go shopping and did a lot of walking around ...does that count for anything besides spending money. :lol;
Joanna
-
Good on you people who exercise, keep up the good work and I'll keep up reading about it. Thats enough exercise for me. >:D
-
Why dont ya like exercise sluff?
-
Even though the Doctors disagree, after working on ladders all day and being on my feet, the last thing I'm going to do is exercise. It takes me until the next morning to get over the soreness from the day before, sometimes I can't even work the next day.
-
Ahhh... totally understandable. Have you tried any medicines for pain? Like over the counter meds.
-
Yes I take Naproxyn, which the Doctor is not happy about either. Tylenol doesn't work. Naproxyn doesn't work half of the time either.
-
Sounds like you need a Hot Tub Sluff.
-
Did you say a Hottie and a tub? ;) >:D Really I wish I had a hot tub.
-
Some friend of mine have one, and it really makes me feel better, relaxed. And a hottie and tub can be good for ya too I suppose.
-
Did you say a Hottie and a tub? ;) >:D Really I wish I had a hot tub.
My hubby is a "Hottie" is that good enough :P ;)
-
:rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

you guys make me tired! weather here in colorado still isn't warm enough most days that i want to get out and walk. i did manage 1.7 miles on thursday, not terribly consistant yet, but some is better than nothing. i am so ready for spring. my sister in oregon already has blooming trees, tulips and daffodils...i hate her ;D i've managed to loose 14 lbs since january, so i guess i'm doing something right.
-
Good for you Grammalady, keep up the great work and keep us posted as you continue to lose, it's an inspiration to know that it is possible and hopefully the weather will be warming up for you soon. :2thumbsup;
-

14lbs since January!! That's excellent! You inspire us all. :2thumbsup;
-
Exercise is so important. You folks are great!
I hope you all can inspire more IHD members to start. ;)
-
We walked to lunch and back today!
-
worked on taxes, and the stress of it made me eat 1/2 of a cold pizza! *sigh* will try my best to get on the bike tomorrow!
-
We walked to lunch and back today!
gotta have some insentive :) :) :)
-
I have been walking around the hospital. We have things like McDonald's and Starbuck's in here... great destinations. ;)
-
Finally I have something to post, I did a different walking video today with my sister and a friend.
It is a 3 mile fast video, I never did this walking video before but man o man I like it. I missed dialysis yesterday because all of Nova Scotia was under a freezing rain storm (I have pictures but can't find my usb wire) so I was abit concerned about exercising but it made me feel great. I love the fact that other people in here are joining me in this :2thumbsup;
I can tell you if I miss a day that I can't post what I have done I feel kinda bad! Just what I need MOTIVATION! ;D
Kim

Go to the pawn shop and get youself a cheap bike.
You can ride a mile out and a mile back and coast a lot if need be. ;)
Of course at first it wont be your feet getting sore but your rear. ;D :beer1;
-
35 minutes exercise took to me Egypt and back. I taped "Digging for the Truth" on the DVR so I'd have something to entertain me while I worked out. ;D
-
Now that is an idea JBeany, watching a favorite program while moving. I will have to try it. Maybe exercise while watching MIke Rowe and Dirty Jobs.
-
I did my 3 mile walking video with a friend, it was a great workout.
Kim :'( (thats sweat)
-
Good for you Kim, keep it up girlfriend, you can do this :2thumbsup;
-
Only about 20 minutes today before my sugar crashed and I had to break for food. Probably should have got back on, but it's hard enough to make myself start once a day, let alone twice!
-
Hangs head in shame!
-
40 minutes and a trip to ancient Rome to learn about the Antikythera mechanism. I love the history channel!
Come on, kit - find a good show and join us!
-
I think I will start walking on the treadmill tomorrow. I love the idea of finding a show and watching it while your exercising... makes the time fly by and keeps your mind off of the actual workout. I shall join in tomorrow... your turn kit!!! :P
-
People, people I am on vacation! Can't I just laze around awhile? I am going to get guilted into exercising, I just know you all can do it!
-
Guilt. Guilt. Guilt. It's good for you. ;)
-
Well I did the treadmill this morning while watching Live with Regis and Kelly... so an hour, wow, yay.. of course I wasn't running, just walking on a slow speed sometimes raising it like during the commercials.. :clap;
-
Excellent Angala
I did a 2 mile video, I am moving up to the beach bodies video tomorrow I think
Kim
-
Up on my feet shopping all day. Does this count?
-
Good work KitKatz, apparently, for every hour and a half you spend window shopping you burn 325 calories. :clap;
Imagine how many you could burn if you actually bought something! ;) :D :2thumbsup;
-
Oh, Dude! I spent seven hours shopping yesterday and did I buy stuff. I bought two movies on DVD Hitch and Eragon and the set of Dinosaurs episodes. I bought my niece and nephew toys for the niece's birthday in April. And bought some stuff for school prizes. Then we had chocolate cake for lunch! Then I topped the day off with forty books from the Goodwill! 18 of hwich I am shipping to my oldest daughter. THe others are Star Trek books which I like to read. Hoo whee was it fun!!!
-
Way to go Kitkatz! :thumbup;
-
Well, i got winded just reading all the shopping you did, does that count? ;) I remember when i used to be able to walk for hours, now, i cant even walk inside a freaken grocery store with out my back and legs hurting like hell :'(
-
Whew - sounds like too much shopping for me!
35 minutes, the last 10 at double my usual pace. Sweaty, sweaty, sweaty! Anyone else get itchy from the toxics coming out of your skin with the sweat? I have to run for the shower right after I finish or I would scratch myself to death.
-
I still have my chest cath in and sweat under my dressing, not a good scene, but I do run to the tub also, is anyone at the point that you look forward to it yet? ::)
Kim

A hot shower, followed by a cold shower, is always good and invigorating.
Great going, JB!!
-
I don't look forward to it, but it is becoming routine. That's good enough for me. I'm automatically planning my non-dialysis days so that there is time to exercise before I get dressed.
-
just found this thread. sounds like everyone is doing a great job. :2thumbsup;
i worked out for about 45 mins yesterday. i have a "Power 90" dvd that i use at home when i dont want to go to the gym.
today i ran around the deli for 4 hrs like a chicken with its head cut off. Very Busy today. that was my work out for the day. so bad on my back. hot tub...need a hot tub.... ;) ooooorrrrrrr.............massage........anyone :D :lol;
-
Work starts on Monday...
-
no walking today :( it's cold and raining. YEA! no snow. must be spring. i'm thinking of joining a fitness center, exercycles, treadmills, oh my.
-
I went shopping all morning, now i'm going to walk on the treadmill... wooo.
-
40 minutes again, right on schedule. Ya know, I really think I'm getting used to this.
-
:thumbup;
I have kinda lost track , but tonight is the night
Kim
-
30 minutes on the treadmill yesterday, i'll post later what I do today. :thumbup;
-
40 minutes on the stationary bike last night. Today it's about 40 minutes of weight resistant exercises.
-
Heph & I walked about 4 miles today.
-
:thumbup; HLL, way to go. I walked 30 minutes again today on treadmill.
-
Another 40 minutes today.
Keep it up, everyone!
-
Water Aerobics and more Water Aerobics I Love My Water Aerobics ! ;D
-
I went to work today and was on my feet all day long. My feet were screaming by the time I left school and went to dialysis. That does count??
-
45 min arobics today, its finally spring here (I think)
-
30 minutes on treadmill again, 1 mile :thumbup;
-
Swimming in a pile of paperwork. *Sigh* Drowning in a pool of 6th graders.
-
All day on the allotment yesterday, about 6 hours of gardening! It was a beautiful day here too, nice and warm. Lots of digging and moving stuff, also a bit of woodwork. Exhausting but fun. ;)
-
Double-dutch today! 40 minutes on the stationary bike and 20 minutes of weight resistant exercises.
:beer1;
-
We are going to be the most in shape Kidney people ever!!!! :yahoo; :yahoo;
-
Blah - only 15 minutes today before I got too dizzy to keep going. I took off more fluid than usual yesterday, trying to figure out if I've actually lost any weight. I left .7 k under my supposed dry weight. I made thru the dialysis without having any problems, but my blood pressure has been a little low since last night. How is it that my blood pressure can be too low when my fingers and ankles are still water logged? *sighhhhhhhh*
Double-dutch today! 40 minutes on the stationary bike and 20 minutes of weight resistant exercises.
:beer1;
Hey, e-mail me some of that ambition, Zach. You seem to have some to spare!
-
Ran 3 miles on the treadmill and lifted weights for 45 minutes.
-
I am a failure at this exercise thing here. I am sorry folks.
-
Allrighty folks, this is it, i HAVE to start doing something. I went to Mervyn's today and caught a glance at myself in those full size mirrors and OH MY HEAVENS!!! :o Why hasnt anyone told me what i look like, i wanted to break down and cry right there in the men's boxer section :P (but i was too busy oogling over the men on the packages) :P ;) and i dont know if it was just my imagination but i could've sworn those damn mirrors were following me, every where i turned BAM, there i was, AAAACK, so i am going to attempt the treadmill tonight, i will let you all know how i do, k, Cant thank you enough for being here for me. Love to you all :grouphug;
-
I am a failure at this exercise thing here. I am sorry folks.
You can do it Kit!! We all know you can.
:beer1;
-
Kit & Goffynina,
YOU CAN DO IT!
We are all here supporting you guys.
Love n Hugs
H-L-L ;)
-
35 minutes today - feeling better, so back on track! I'm down just over half a kilogram in dry weight. Not much, but it's a start. Everyone keeps telling me I look like I've lost weight. Not sure how that is possible - surely less than 2 pounds wouldn't make a visible difference. Maybe, if I'm lucky, that means I'm replacing some of the fat with muscle, and that's what they are seeing. Or maybe they are just being kind and lying to make me feel better!
-
Maybe, if I'm lucky, that means I'm replacing some of the fat with muscle, and that's what they are seeing
You're right, since muscle weighs more than fat. Great going JB!!
Later tonight I'll be doing 40 minutes on the stationary bike.
:beer1;
-
I notice nobody has said they're doing yoga. That's a great exercise - helps tone your muscles, burns calories, works up a sweat, stretches you limbs and back....very good. The "Y" in my town has classes for $6, and you can go whenever you want.
Also, for the ladies, what about the "Carmen Electra learn to strip" DVD? Exercise doesn't have to be boring!!!
Best way to increase your metabolism? Increase the number of meals you have - eat every 3 hours. Just make sure your portions are smaller and balanced. This combined with exercise is pretty much guaranteed weightloss!
I also work as a waitress and walk about 8-10 miles/shift. Plus I carry those heavy piggy-portion plates, so I get my resistant training in as well. Plus the dog, and the horse, and all the stairs in my house. Damn, I look good for 40!!!!

-
I go to Yoga at least once a week.
-
Sprained the toe on Saturday night, so now I have an excuse. Hehehe! >:D
-
Excuses, excuses!
35 minutes on the glider, and 5 or so beating the stuffing out of the punching bag.
-
But it hurts!!!
-
Why is it, everytime i come to this thread i hear the theme from "Rocky" ;) :popcorn;
-
Running up the steps in Philadelphia, music playing in the background, standing on the top shadow boxing...that Rocky music or is it the Eye of the Tiger??
-
Ran 3 miles on treadmill and lifted weights for 45 minutes.
-
I haven't done any walking on the treadmill since last Friday, I been out of town and blah blah, I shall start again tomorrow, and adding my ab lounge xl into the mix. Great job everyone. :thumbup;
-
Another 40 minutes today. I want to bump that up, but haven't managed it yet. I'm still far too ready to quit at 40minutes!
-
you all are doing so much better than i am. it's been so windy here i haven't wanted to walk. spring may be here, but we had snow last week.
-
30 minutes on the treadmill yesterday and today.
-
Walking around on the sore toe counts, right?
-
I am sure ANY walking would do Kit, ;) :2thumbsup;
-
Double Dutch: 40 minutes on the stationary bike, then 35 minutes of weight resistance exercises. Then dialysis!
So when are you two ladies going to join us???
-
Zach, that makes me tierd just reading your post. :P
-
Zach, that makes me tierd just reading your post. :P
That's because it's past midnight!!!
;)
-
Not here.
-
So when are you two ladies going to join us???
Yes ladies, as much as you will hate to hear it, it will make you feel better.
-
I agree with BigSky, you will feel better. I started walking on the treadmill and getting out of breath after 5 minutes, and wanting to quit after 7... I now can walk for 30 minutes without having to catch my breath, or lower my speed, I can maintain the same speed the whole time. I feel more energy throughout the day and no longer have to have naps... exercising makes a huge difference.
-
I walked up the stairs at school and back down them. Ouchie!
-
Walked 1 mile warmup
Ran 2.5 miles
lifted weights for 50 minutes
-
Geez, Bigsky, you're making me feel like I'm slacking off!
40 minutes for me today on my little exercise machine.
-
Up to 45 mins on the treadmill now, yay... still cant run a mile but hey, whatever.. :P
-
I got up out of the bed this morning!
-
I got up out of the bed this morning!
Right on Kit, you burned 6 calories, more than i have all day :P it is 8:30 pm and i am still in my p.j.'s :o ::) :P

-
Ohhh meee too, and by the looks of it, tomorrow is going to be p.j. day too, LOVIN' IT :2thumbsup; (fresh p.j.'s though) ;) But on Monday i plan to start some type of exercise regimen for sure, (i hope) :P
-
Go, goofy, go! Even if you only manage 10 minutes of walking to start with, it will get easier, and you will feel better!
-
10 MINUTES?? I HAVE TO START OFF WITH 10 MINUTES :o How 'bout i start off with 3 and do kegel's for the other 7? :P :P
-
LOL, goofy - aim higher, girlfriend!

Thank you all, i have enjoyed reading this thread just to get motivated, and i have been motivated just havent got off my lazy keester and did a damn thing about it, soooo, after Easter, i plan to start, wish me luck my friends, (again) :P ;) :2thumbsup;
-
All my love and support!!!

-
Geez, Bigsky, you're making me feel like I'm slacking off!
40 minutes for me today on my little exercise machine.
Nope each person is different. The more you do it the more you can eventually do. :2thumbsup;
-
I got up out of the bed this morning!
Umm that naked dancing counts as exercise also. ;) :thumbup;
-
50 minutes for me today.
-
50 minutes for me today.
Good for you Jbeany, even on Easter, you go girl, :2thumbsup;

Another 50 minutes - two days in a row!
Keep it up! :thumbup;
Today I ran 1.5 miles and walked 1.75 miles then weights again.
-
I walked on the treadmill for 60 minutes today, 2% incline, and 2.0 mph. :thumbup;
I then walked on the treadmill in the afternoon, for 30 minutes, on 2.5% incline, and 2.3 mph. Slowly increasing little by little.. im getting there. :P

-
I exercised today during the TV commercials for an hour long TV show!
:rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; Kitkatz you make me feel so much better about myself.... Thank you :-*
-
Seriously, i did exercise during the commercials. My atonement for my TV watching times. I have decided to exercise during commercials, even if it is for five minutes at a time. It is short bursts of exercise but it was fun. The dog thought I had cracked up last night, when I walked in circles in the livingroom.

Maybe you did crack up. >:D
-

Great Kitkatz! Keep it going. ;)
-
OK, this is what i did, Hubby and I went to Costco and i walked around the store really fast for 30 minutes, up and down the isles with maybe a 2 minute break half way through (stopped for a sample of chunky chocolate chip cookie, which i gave to my hubby thank you very much ;) ) damn i wish Costco was closer, i wish i could walk like that on my treadmill, :P
YO ADRIANNE, I DID IT!!!!! (Rocky impression) :P
-
Put it in front of the tv, goofy, and find a show you really like. It's done wonders for me.
I didn't do so well this week - between surgery and this nagging cough, head cold, body ache thing I've got going (I'm a walking Nyquil commercial.), I only managed about 30 minutes on Wednesday and probably less than that today. But at least I did a little bit.
-
I walked in circles in the livingroom.
Every little bit helps...
Young Melbourne wife and mother, Karen Gatt was once so overweight she could barely walk to the letterbox. She tried every diet, but none of them worked, until she decided to take matters into her how hands. She devised an easy-to-follow, highly effective system for healthy eating and began powerwalking around the clothesline! She lost 67kg in 13 months.
-
I was sick for the last couple of days, so I did not exercise.
But tonight I got back on the stationary bike and did my usual 40 minutes. Had my protein drink and now I'm about to do my push ups: 10 reps x 3 sets.
EDITED AT 11:40PM I actually did 4 sets. Cool!
-
Walked to the grotto spa and sat in the spa for an hour or so. I also did some leg and arm toning exercises while in the spa.
-
My usual workout: 30 minutes on the treadmill, at 3.3 mph. I gradually increase the incline to 2 percent. I'd like to eventually up either the speed or the incline a bit. Right now I get this in maybe 4 times a week. My intentions were good yesterday morning, but my body wanted more sleep.
-
Last night- walked 3 miles down on the trail
Today ran 3.5 miles on the treadmill, 30 minutes of weightlifting
-
I'm curious about this exercise thing. The Doctor asks me if I exercise, I always say yes because My work is physical. last week I cut down a bunch of trees, not real big ones but a lot of them. Cut them up in 2 ft pieces loaded them in my trailer that is 10'w x 16' long and 5 feet high. Then I delivered the wood and unloaded it. Also that week I washed all the windows on a two story home with 30 ft peaks, I had to load my trailer with the ladders unload, use them then reload them and then unload them. I had to run a wheel barrow up hill to haul the wood from a large tree. Wheel barrow ed it approx 250ft and very steep going from the back yard to the trailer at the street. ( Approx 10-12 trips in an hour)
Now the Doctor tells me this is not exercise. Well if this is not exercise then just what the hell is it? Does anyone see what I'm driving at? Where am I supposed to have the energy to exercise? He said start out slow and go for a walk? Duh my feet are very painful all I want is a chair. I've been walking all day!
-
Holy moley, Sluff. I hate to see what your doc think exercise really is, if that is not it!

Holy moley, Sluff. I hate to see what your doc think exercise really is, if that is not it!
Thanks I was hoping it wasn't just me. All this I do plus I can't sleep half the time. Dang I get tired out. LOL
-
Yeah, Sluff, your doctor is full of it. I'd think exercise is anything that burns calories, that elevates your heart rate. And I'd think that work you describe would qualify. I know I couldn't do it.
-
Sluff, you hang in there buddy, you do what YOUR body can do, each of us know what your going through. Your doing good amigo, just imagine if you werent doing anything, you'd be considered lazy like me :P
-
I been walking on the treadmill everyday 45-60 mins, and doing crunches on my Ab Lounge, and sometimes next week my Hip Hop ABS Video should be coming, woohoo... Plus my Dance Dance Revolution game for PS2.. thats a workout all by itself. :)

You've been walking alot lately Angela, what is the grand total lost thus far? Whatever it is, keep it up girlfriend, it will be coming off sooner than you know it :2thumbsup;
-
I'm curious about this exercise thing.
Sorry Sluff, but the hard days work-week you put it is just not enough.
We all need a regular exercise routine to keep our bodies healthy, especially as we get older. If your feet are painful, maybe the stationary bike is better than treadmill. Or maybe some weight lifting. But the key is to do sustained (building up to 60 minutes) and consistant (every day or at least 3 times a week) exercise.
Sorry, but I think it's important for you to know the facts.
-
Good ol' Zach, i knew we could rely on you for the facts, just the facts ma'am ;) 8) (Dragnet) i think? But anyways, i know i dont only speak for myself when i say we appreciate your words of wisdom all mighty one ;) Keep on keepin' on my friend ::)

I respect your honesty Zach.

I did four laps in the lazy river last night at the resort. Swam them. It must have been around a mile. I am a lazy swimmer so it was not a brutal swim. Easy with the current. Very nice.

Unfotunately, I haven't lost even 1 lb yet, but that's my own fault... I was still enjoying being abl to eat whatever, and was doing so.. and was choosing horrible foods.. LOL, But hey, whatever... 3 yrs on a renal diet sucks, and I figured 3 months eating whatever I want was worth it. :p The exercise however helped me *maintain* my weight, so i didn't gain any either. Whew. Now I am slowly working on eating good, and cutting out 1 bad thing a week. :)
It's also help build stamina and some strength!

40 minutes today - the hacking cough finally went away for the most part, so I was able to get back on schedule.

I exercised during the commercials during Terminator 3 tonight. Hurray! I figure if I am going to watch TV at night I am going to pay an exercise price during at least one show.

For the last 3 days I started walking 24 minute miles (2.5mph) on a 2% incline, 2 miles at a time. Well today to mix it up and give my body some suprises I walked 1 mile at 2.5 mph and 2% incline, and the 1 mile at 2.5 mph and 4% incline... lemme just say AFTER i felt awesome, but during I thought I was gonna die.. lol!

I been doing 2 miles on the treadmill everyday with a rest day, and weights 3x a week.. and Hip Hop Abs video.. well, since tonight were leaving to go to Arkansas for a funeral, we won't be home for 4/5 days... I'll only be able to go for walks... Do you think this will throw me off the losing weight track?

Dont they have areas that you can walk either early morning or early evening in Arkansas? you aint gonna get out of it that easy girlfriend ;) I say just watch what you eat and any chance you see to step away, go for a walk, even if it is around a block, go a couple of times, dont let your body slip into the lazy mode so that when you come home your not going to want to start back up again... you can do this girlfriend, good luck and have a safe trip :cuddle;
-
Ran 1.5 miles and walked 1 mile, lifted weights 45 minutes.
-
I'm still holding steady at 40 minutes on off-dialysis days. I've started using little hand weights for a few minutes everytime, too. It seems to help my nerve damaged wrist a little, but I can't do much before it starts to hurt!
-
Well, I did horrible while in Arkansas. I ate everything and anything... I think it was mostly emotional eating. I did NOT do any exercise... I could of walked down lovely hilly roads and got great workouts, but what'd I do? Sat around.. visited with family... but I'm back home, and back on track.. back on the exercise wagon! :)
-
Fell of the wagon big time. Having a hard time getting back on it. Tired all of the time.
-
I'm so proud of myself this morning! Here's what I did, and I feel great!! :)
Treadmill: 3% incline at 3mph for 30 mins
Weights: 5lb dumb bells for 12 minutes doing arms, shoulders and chest
Hip Hop ABS Video, 30 minutes
:clap;
-
I walked by myself for 45 minutes in the arroyo near my house today. It's so beautiful right now. I tried to keep the pace up so I could feel my heart.
I usually walk with a friend but she's been unavailable lately. Being alone was nice for a change!
-

I fall off the excersize wagon but find that getting back on isn't really very hard. If you just go out and do it once or twice your body feels like it hasn't missed a beat.
I recall reading about a young woman who worked for a nutritional supplement company and who was also on dialysis. She mentioned her excersize regimen which included weight training and running.
You can excersize and feel great on dialysis...some people have done it. I wasn't a member of that club but it just shows you that we can feel alot better if we really want to make the effort to do it.
-
Fell off the wagon today - got up and did so many chores and errands I never made time to work out. Now I'm feeling guilty. The question is, am I feeling guilty enough to set my alarm early and get up and do the workout before I go to dialysis tomorrow? Well. . . .maybe!
-
haven't been doing much of anything lately. went to the gym last monday, cant even remember what i did. i got into the gym today. did the cross trainer for 20 mins, weights for 30 mins and back on the cross trainer for an additional 10mins.
now if i could just get back into my old routine i had last yr. at this time. going on off dialysis days. ;)

Thought I was getting in reasonably good shape with my 40 minute work outs. Then I decided to add some crunches to the mix. (It is my stomach I'm trying to flatten to make the transplant surgeon happy, after all.) Owwwwwie! After 20, I'm laying on the floor in a puddled heap, panting. Ah, well, good for me, right?
-
Yay for JB! I on the other hand forget to exercise. Ummm. or is it forgot to exercise or is it excuses, excuses...
-
Yesterday 1 mile on treadmill
Today 1 mile walk
2.5 mile run
Lifted weights 30 minutes.
-
For the past week I have been doing 30 mins on the exercise bike plus 30 mins in the sauna (the amount of fluid that sweats out is sweeeeet... and it's also relaxing, so works on both counts!). I also walk half way to work on the way in, and half way on the way back... about 30-40 mins total. Breaking it up during the day works for me and it feels good to get out and do something AND lose fluid :)
I must say I feel good after the exercise and will perhaps slowly ramp it up on the bike.... slowly anyway.
-
1 mile walk
3 mile run
45 min weights
-
1 mile walk warmup
3.75 mile run
-
30 minutes of exercise and about 8 hours of rearranging and spring cleaning. Phew!

:bandance; :clap; :clap; :bandance;
This little guy is exercising for me today! And a one, two, three, four...
-
1.5 walk warmup
3 mile run
lift weights for 30 minutes

I get 2 walks a day, with my new puppy, Isabella. Totally unexpected!! Just got her Monday afternoon, a rescue pup! I'll be sure to post her picture on the pets page!
-
:clap; OMG, you know how i feel about pets :clap; especially rescue pets, God Bless you MyssAnne, cant wait to hear all about it :bandance;

Walked 2 miles
Ran 2 miles
Will try to lift weights tonight. :P
-
After 13 days of laying in a bed, i'm ready and excited to get back on the treadmill and back to doing my DVD's... slowly but i'll get back to it starting tomorrow! :)
-
Can I join in? I have started walking too, somedays trying to walk some and run some, alternating each until finished. I walk my dog pretty much every day. Today I went out for 30 minutes. She loves it, but I felt stiff. Did 20 quat thrusts yesterday with my daughter!! This is a great thread, I feel much better! :bandance;
-
40 minutes on the stationary Bike tonight.
40 minutes weight training tomorrow.

I have started swimming again at my sisters, does anyone know if i pretend to walk in the water if that is the same as if i am walking for reals? My neph basically told me any movements i do in the water will benefit me, i just want it to work :banghead;
-
I think as long as your pushing yourself while walking in water it will be good for you Susie, cause you have the resistance of the water working for you as well.
Then i looked it up for ya Goofy
Water walking requires no special equipment. You don’t even have to get your hair wet. Brisk water walking is more strenuous than it looks and can provide an excellent aerobic workout, burning 300 to 500 calories per hour.
Here's How:
Find a pool, lake, ocean, or other relatively large body of water. The water temperature should be cool to warm - 78 to 88 degrees F.
If you are just starting an exercise program, begin gradually with five minutes of slow walking, preferably waist deep in an uncrowded body of water. Over several weeks, build up to at least 20 minutes per session, raising your speed, and lengthening by just a few minutes at a time.
Starting Position: Stand with your abdominal muscles firm, tailbone pointed toward the floor, buttocks tucked somewhat to brace your spine in position, shoulders back, and chest lifted (neutral position).
Action: Stride or jog forward eight steps, then back four steps. Maintain the neutral position throughout the exercise. Push relatively straight arms forward and back at your sides as you walk. Turn your hands each time so that the palms press against the water. Use your arms in opposition to your legs: When you step forward with your right leg, bring your left arm forward, and vice versa.Walk as you would on land, placing your heel down first. Keep your back straight and stomach muscles taut. Lifting your knees higher will increase the intensity of the exercise.
Variations 1: Walk forward and backward with short steps, long steps, average steps, or step kicks.
Variations 2: Move in a pattern of a circle or square.
When you are ready to increase intensity, stride by taking very large, controlled steps or bound by pushing off with your back foot to bounce up off the pool floor between strides.
Tips:
When circling, be sure to turn around midway and circle in the other direction to balance the physical demands on your body.
As with any aerobic exercise, start with a mild warm-up and finish with a similar cool-down. Stretching after you are warmed up is easy and soothing in water.

Bleah, didn't do so well on the machine this week, but I did do a lot of walking. I went window shopping Friday in Petoskey. It's all little shops spread out over a couple of hilly miles, so I don't feel to bad about not having time in the morning for my regular workout. I was pretty happy though - it's the first time in ages I've had the energy for that kind of walking in years.
I ran out of time for a workout before I left for work on Sunday. Six straight hours on my feet should count for something, but all I think it did was make my knees sore! I'm going to do an extra long workout today to make up for all the ones I skipped this week.
-
Thank you for the info Tamara, i was doing it all wrong, i was just walking in place :oops; i shall go back and start doing it this way ;) :thx;
-
when i used to do more martial art practice, i would enjoy going to the local pool and practicing some basic moves in chest-deep water. kicking and punching underwater is a great workout, and it keeps them little floaters from the kids away from ya.
;)

Ahhhh, i am going to have to try the "kicking and punching" the kids tend to love climbing on me for some reason, (i think they think i am an island or something) :P ;)
But is it possible to rebuild muscle? :popcorn;
-
i believe it is possible to rebuild muscle. i'm just too damn lazy to try. but, i am getting better at it. ;)
i lost almost 80 percent of my muscle mass when i was bedridden, but it is gradually coming back as i've gotten a little more active and concentrated on eating more protein.
i'm really bummed about my feet and legs though. vasculitis was one of my early symptoms, and it made it impossible for me to play the drum set anymore. walking and tai chi have become a little difficult too, and these are (were) my passions for the past 40 years or so.
the vasculitis isn't too much of a problem, now, but the after-effects of it have ravaged my lower legs and feet, and they still cramp and freeze if i use them too much.
o well.
'the only constant is change'
we say, in tai chi.
love

I ran up and down the school stairs at least six times today during the International Day we had for the 6th graders. I was the one teacher without a class so I helped everyone and did time outs for a few kids. I ran like crazy!

40 minutes on the stationary bike tonight.
And yes, people on hemodialysis can definitely increase muscle mass with regular resistance exercise. Along with building muscle mass, resistance exercise can increase bone density for people on hemodialysis.
Let's take control of what we can.

I need to start working out again....I will start with the stationary bike we have and then we do have some weights and hopefully I can get back into the gym routine since there is nothing like it........

Oh Zach, you always know the right things to say to make me feel, how shall i say this, hmm, umm, ::) ok ok, good all over ;) Now i do believe there is hope, thank you my friend :bow;
-
My regular exercise is having the lovely extra benefit of working up a tremendous amount of sweat, since we're having a heat wave here. I never thought I'd be so happy to be drenched in sweat, but at least I can have more ice water that way.
-
OK, to be honest.. I have not got back to exercising since I been home from my last hospital stay, I'm feeling down about it, cuz I definitely felt energized and more alert and better after exercising... i just cant seem to motivate myself to do it. grrr.
-
Well I have yet to get back in exercise......I know last I posted in this thread is that I would do it but have it to really commit....I am thinking of yoga and the library seems to have many books on it......
-
I am off the exercise wagon, too. Fell off it with a bump.
-
I'm still on my 40 minute workout every non-dialysis day, although I've missed the occasional Sunday when I knew I was going to go to work and wasn't sure I'd have the energy for both. By August, I'm supposed to be on the NxStage at home, so I'm hoping to increase the number of days I work out then. I haven't been posting about it regularly because I'm finally to the point where a daily workout is just part of the routine, like brushing my teeth in the morning. I've kind of slacked off on the all-rabbit food diet lately, so I haven't lost any weight in the last couple of weeks - but at least with the regular exercise, I haven't gained any either!
-
Well, ever since the pain in my right knee and ankle got to be unbearable I stopped exercising... :( I'm now gaining weight... so far in the last months I have gained 6 lbs.. almost 7... sad. I hope to start eating healthy again and doing some upper body exercises with dumb bells until I can do the treadmill and Hip Hop ABS videos again... Keep up the great work everyone :grouphug;
-

Fantastic JB!!
You're in the "zone" and that's the way to do it--regularly!

-
Walked 3 miles, then ran 2 miles, then hit the weights.
-
Whew - got thru my 3 straight weeks of NxStage training, where I didn't really have a lot of time to think about exercising, and now I'm home and back to regular workouts. My goal is 30 minutes every day now. I got off to a good start with the last three days, but with the 3 weeks of slacking and only doing a couple of workouts during that time, my calves are letting me know it!
-
I've been so busy with work that I haven't been able to exercise for the past 6 weeks! ugh.

Not for everyone st789, I have a very hard time even walking to the car somedays, hips hurt, back hurts, but i wouldnt mind being pushed in my wheelchair through a park ;) But there are some days that i feel good to move around a little more, i try to do as much as i can before my hips and back start acting up, but those days are so few lately :banghead;

It's going on a couple of weeks now that i havent swam (is that a word) ??? And i must admit, i can now tell the difference. Now that i am ready and able to get back to the pool, it's freaken cold outside, can you believe it, i think it was 88 today and windy, in August?? WTF? Oh well, i am hoping it starts warming up again cuz I really do need to get in there and bad :)
-
88 = cold? You gotta be kidding me, right? :urcrazy;
Missed this morning's workout again, but made up for it cleaning at my gram's house. She tripped and sliced open her head late last night, and I went this morning to clean up the mess. Nothing like a little arterial spray to make a huge mess. It looked like a crime scene. She fell on the bedroom floor, doused the bathroom all over, then went out to the living room to call 911. I asked her why she didn't just grab the phone in the bedroom. We installed one in every room for a reason after all. . . Gram says, "I didn't want to get blood on the bedsheets." :banghead; Right, because the living room carpet is soooooo much easier to clean. . . Bless her heart! Thankfully she's fine, but I figure I don't need a workout after doing 3 hours worth of scrubbing and running up and down stairs to her washer and dryer.
I had to laugh at the neighbor who called me early this morning to let me know what was going on. She's also elderly, and walks with a cane, so she wasn't capable of cleaning anything. She told me I wouldn't believe how much mess even a small amount of blood makes. Ummmmm.... I didn't laugh - or bother to explain why I knew EXACTLY how much mess it could make!
-
Although 88 is ideal weather it is too cold to go swimming (for me that is) ;) And it has been dropping down to the 60's at night, and i am usually still in the water at night ::)
-
Omg, i havent been to the gym in months. I definately feel it. But tomorrow i will get back. Since it will be a dialysis day i am only going to walk on the tread mill, then thursday i can do the crosstrainer and weights. I need to get my blood pressure under control. Perhaps the only thing that really needs to be done is lowering myh dry weight.
It got up to over 100 today. Sometimes i like to walk around out here in the country but i would probly collapse before i walked around the drive.
-
Well honeybunz, you best get yourself ready for Vegas Baby :bandance; I've got to warn you, there will be LOTS of walking involved (that is if you plan on going to the strip) NOOO, NOT STRIP, i know the way YOU think RobertO ;) I am getting excited, i hope i am there ::)

I'm with you Zach...been working crazy hours; 10 -12 hours a day, some weekends. The good news is that business is up (I'm in sales); the bad news is that all work and no play make Jill cranky!!! The other good news is that I am on a fun business trip in NY right now and I will go home right into vacation until 8/19.
I am determined to get back on the exercise gig while on vacation.
-
It felt like we walked a million miles when in NY, so I feel like I got some exercise. But in the 4 days since I have been home I did very little. Today I had a brisk 45 minute walk - before it got too warm. I hope to do that everyday for awhile, if I can. The gym... I should do that too... maybe in a few more days ;D
-
Walked 4 miles today.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 40 .............Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.
kelli ;)
-
Ha! ;D :lol;
-
I fell of the wagon too. I thought I'd exercise more this summer, but the heat outside made me change my mind. I did better in the winter doing exercise vidoes.
Now that it won't be so warm, anyone want to exercise again? This is a fun thread. :bandance;
-
I feel disgusting since I haven't exercised in months due to my AVN pain... gaining 14 lbs in a few months upsets me and I feel maybe I should just cry thru the exercise just to lose weight... hmmm
-
Everyday I wake up with the intention to at least go on a walk....but then my bed looks so much more inviting. That's probably a bad habit. I think once I go back to work, I'll want to exercise more, or at least that's what I'm telling myself ;)

I started running about three weeks ago with the goal of getting in the best physical condition possible should the day come that I am fortunate enough to receive a transplant. I have been feeling noticeably better physically and even more so emotionally than I had just a month ago. I have also noticed an improved appetite and better sleep too. The mind and body seem to work together so when one is good the other has a better opportunity and if one suffers the other is more likely to suffer as well. I should have been doing this months ago but I guess everyone moves at their own pace.
I have a question, I am wondering how likely it is that someone like myself would gain weight from this type of activity. I am 5'10" (sorry don't know metric) and 69 kilos, not much fat on me but not much muscle either (no oversized biceps). Right now I am running 3.5 miles almost everyday, I miss occasionally on dialysis days. Any thoughts?
-
I have same idea as George. My (living) transplant should be in Oct, so after my vacation I started to exercise regularly to be on the best possible condition for the surgery. I have been now going 2 months. I think it should definitely help on recovery from the surgery.
I am about same size as George and based on my earlier experience you might gain some weight as muscle is heavier than fat
-
The leg muscles are the largest muscle group. And since muscle weighs more than fat, it's entirely possible that you've added some lean muscle mass to your frame.

I did an hour on the gazelle last night. Try to do it again tonight. :bandance;
-
Zach, thanks for the knock on the head. I started walking, only a couple of laps around the football field, but I am walking! I have been taking the stairs at work whenever possible, and am parking as far away as I can at work, and try to walk briskly as well! I have just started the proceedings to be put on the transplant list, and I want to be in as good shape as I can be! :boxing;

:yahoo; Ramona
:yahoo; MyssAnne
Keep rockin it girls :)
-
I've got to get moving. I was at transplant clinic today and I've put on weight.
Good news though. The Doctor said the people with a BMI in the overweight range live longer than people in the ideal or obese range. He said he read it in a new study.
Who's up for double cheese burgers? :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

mmmmmmm :)

I did a bike ride with the kids today. It was sponsored by the Kiawanas Club. It was a treasure hunt with clues. We got "t-shirts". Doesn't take much to excite me. Great day and a nice ride. We did 6 miles. :thumbup;
-
Oh, I've been so bad this week - I've been up and out the door on the run every day. I haven't worked out at all, but then it seems like I'm barely home long enough to do anything except dialysis lately. Bleah. I hope next week is better!
-
I did ten sit-ups last night and I can feel it today. :urcrazy; If that doesn't say I'm outta shape I don't know what does! Well, maybe I'll do 15 tonight! :lol;

YOU GUYS ARE ALL DOING SOOOOO WELL!!!!! I wish I could move that well!!! This damn stroke took away so much of my mobility...but I just started physical therapy and am seeing a private trainer who just ROCKS!!!! I walk about half a mile every other day....well, it takes me 20 minutes to walk it.....and then on days I don't walk, I'm in an ADAPTED water aerobics class..... I'm the most handicapped person in the water....so if I can do it, most other people can too......and that work out is about an hour of WORK on my body....I can't seem to get out of the pool.....and then every other day I do a weight lifting regiment after my walk.... I have to say that this whole exercise thing is the BEST THING I could've EVER started since I've gotten sick. It has given me the energy to get up and get moving....my sleep has improved, my mood has improved, my appetite has improved... I recommend this exercise thing to EVERY PATIENT that I've come into contact with.....

OK well today i did a lot of sleeping today and had a dream i was in an aerobics class and woke up sweaty... does that count? ;D
-
Hi All it has been awhile but life is hectic , I have started an aqua fit class 3 times a week, an hour each class. It is the most wonderful thing I have done.
I have as to date lost 40 lbs since dialysis, I am feeling pretty good and looking forward to the day I have lots of energy!!!!
Kim :canadaflag;

I am on a Mon, Wed, Fri, fitness schedule doing 40 min of cardio (approx 3.5 miles running with some good shoes) and weight training (as listed a few post back). I am doing one additional day of cardio on Sundays. Considering working in a beginner class of yoga to help with breathing and flexability maybe also on Sundays.
It's odd that as I am facing the worst health status of my life with renal failure that I would be feeling like I am getting into the the best shape of my life. The benefit of the exercise has made it very easy for me to justify the time involved. My advice to anyone considering being more active is to start small with one thing and work it into your life until it becomes routine, then just build from there.
-
I miss exercising, and I wish I could do it. Hopefully I will get through this ankle crap fast and I'll be back to exercising soon... I had more energy when I was doing some form of cardio everyday.. now I just sleep. I have also gained weight. I weigh'd 135 in June, and now it's Oct and I weigh 148-150, it's very sad... :banghead;
Keep up the exercising everyone.. b/c if you CAN do it, you should... b/c when and if there comes a time you can't, you wish you would of.

Way to go goofynina!! Make it a part of your day, something you do, a routine like feeding the kitty. Know that it is good for you and enjoy the fact that you are doing something good for yourself. Sooner or later you will begin to feel the benefits and will not want to give it up. You might feel like this guy....... :yahoo;
-
Increased my distance tonight (running) to 3.5 miles for a total of about 4 miles (2 tenths warm-up and 2 tenths cool-down).
Also did the weight training (M, W, F).
-
Well Doen Susie. :cuddle;
George Your kicking our butts with your exercise routine i better hurry up and catch up! ;D
-
40 minutes on the stationary bike plus 10 push ups x 3 sets.
Gotta burn-off those candy corn treats!!

-
I couldn't run my distance tonight. I made it to a mile and a half and had to slow down and speed walk to 3 miles. I had a very physical day yesterday and have been eating crap for the past two days so I am blaming that for my lack of performance. I was able to complete my weight training which felt good.
-
Back on pace tonight. The last 5 minutes were kinda tough but I made it without pushing too hard.

I walked 3 times this week - around the RoseBowl which is 3 miles. Then did lunges, crunches and push-ups. Sore but feeling good!
-
Well done everyone!
I did 20 minutes on the stationary bike, 10 minutes on the stepper. And trained my legs and butt with weights and resistance training.
Does anyone know how soon after a transplant can u start training your tummy with crunches and that?? i forgot to ask My doctor... thanks. :)
-
Hey Amanda, my doctors said it was at least 3 mths to workout the stomach. :thumbup;

Another 40 minutes on the stationary bike.
Plus Push ups: 10 reps x 3 sets.
Getting in shape just to get into shape.

Still going strong after a few days off last week, I actually missed it while I was away.
4miles on the tread mill and weight training.
2 sets, 12 reps:
leg press
leg extension
hamstring curl
chest press
shoulder press
chest fly
lat pull down
seated row
bicep curls
tricep extension

Man, i'm so jealous of you guys able to exercise.
Keep up the great work!

Wow! I wasn't sure when I started my conditioning but according to when I posted it was the first week in October. That means it has been two months and I have increased all of my resistance training by at least 50%. If I started the shoulder press at 40lbs I am now doing at least 60lbs, I think the leg press started at 110lbs and now I am doing 180lbs. I continue to feel great during and after training and stand by the recommendation that anyone looking to live better should exercise. You don't have to do exercises that are too hard on your body, start slow and build up.

I had missed a few days due to the Y having holiday hours and such but I was able to get back at it tonight. 4.25 miles (50 min) and weight training. I had to go down 5lbs on the weights. Is that common for missing a few workouts?
-
Yeah George. Seems like it takes so long to build strength, and no time at all to lose it!
I have been lax about exercise this week. Usually walking 3 days a week for an hour, only made it once so I need to get busy.
-
I purchased a ski machine from e-bay with the bargain basement price of 99 cents. I really like the work out it gives me. But now when I jump on my gazelle it seems too easy to be doing anything. I know my heart rate is getting into the target range, but I don't feel anything in my muscles and I can definitely go longer. I guess I am still getting a good aerobic workout. What do you think Zach or George? I like to vary my exercise, but i can't believe using the ski machine for a week would change things that much.
-
I've been trying to be more active, since getting out of the hospital. Boy does it not take long
to lose your strength, and stamina!!
I find if I rest between errands, which involve a lot of walking, I can do more than if I try to do it
all at once. The same works for chores around the house
It feels good. I can feel the muscles and they seem to be thanking me!! I do want to
be able to really exercise again though.
-
I've decided since I can't do any cardio right now besides the bowling I do, I will do crunches on my AB loung, and use my 5lbs dumbbells for my arms... at least it's something. :thumbup;
-
. What do you think Zach or George? I like to vary my exercise, but i can't believe using the ski machine for a week would change things that much.
Hmmm...I am not sure. I don't have any experience with either machine. Nice to hear about others exercising. I think we have to do all we can to help ourselves. Keep it up!
Exercising has helped save my life. I am in decent shape at this point in time and I am working on getting into motocross for additional activity. ;D

It's great what you're doing!!
Is there a way to increase the resistance on the gazelle? Otherwise just increase your speed, distance, or time.
30 to 60 minutes, three to six days-a-week, gives you a wonderful aerobic workout.

The gazelle can not be adjusted. I was doing about 45 minutes. My in laws have a nice exercise bike that gets passed around so I am using that now also. I did a half hour Sunday night. I have a friend that is very into fitness and like to keep her body "confused" by switching her work outs. I am trying that also and I can feel the difference in different muscles being worked. I am up to using 5 pound and occasionally 8 pound weights for my arms. My bi-ceps are coming along nicely. My tri-ceps are another story. My legs have been in pretty good shape because of walking. Cold weather has me indoors.
I agree exercise gives you a feeling of well being.
-
My husband and I went cross-country skiing on New Year's Eve afternoon. It was beautiful...the sun was shining and the snow was sparkling and we had the trails all to ourselves...we only had about 3 inches of snow on the ground, so I guess people figured there wasn't enough but it was PERFECT! Unfortunately, with my hip bothering me more and more I found that the skiing is not the best movement for my hip, as I have been in pain ever since. Too bad, because we got about 6 more inches of snow since yesterday, and I love, love to X-country ski!!! :-\
Next week though, I will be starting an aqua fitness class, plus I will continue with riding my stationery bike and crunches.
-
I just finished 10 weeks of aqua fit and will be starting back up in a few weeks for another 10 weeks, and I love it. I feel better then I have in a long time, the only thing I have to be careful of is cramping in my legs, but this only happened a few times and I just scoot to the side of the pool and press my foot hard against the wall.
-
Hey Kim - what is aqua fit? There's a water areobics class at my club but I am such a wimp I cannot bring myself to hop in the pool first thing in the morning. ::)
I have been walking 3 days a week around the Rose Bowl - takes just under an hour. Yesterday I got a little sunburn so I need to start using sunscreen! :P
-
Oh Boy I can't wait till I need to use sunscreen!!
Aquafit is the same thing as water areobics, I just love it, its always hard to get in but once yo do you its so worth it :)
-
I started going to the gym twice a week as part of a weight loss management program. Recently before I started going to the gym, my doctor put me on oxygen while walking due to being short of breath. After 2 weeks of going to the gym, I got rid of the oxygen and haven't used it since. I started out very slowly, having not worked out at a gym in years, but it still made a huge difference and I feel so much better.
Now I do 20 minutes on a hand bike and 20 minutes on the Nu Step machine and 20 minutes of weights each visit My goal is to get on the treadmill and stationary bike next.
I do 2 sets of 15 of the following using 3 or 4 lb dumb bells:
bicep curls
hammer curls
butterfly
vertical rows
overhead tricep press
forward punches
lateral arm raises with a twist
arm crosses
medicine ball press
leg squeezes using a big rubber ball

Several years ago, I had access to an indoor pool and would go swim for an hour or so at about 6:30 am before I had to get to class, and LOVED it. Stretching the muscles that early in the morning started my days out just right.
These days since I don't have that, I'm walking around my neighborhood, which is small, but has one or two quite substantial hills. It takes me probably 45 minutes to do it these days. I've got a little more distance and one or two more hills I can add as I work up to needing that.
-
I am loving my aqua fitness classes!!! The water gives great resistance for a very effective workout. Because of my hip, this is the best workout I can possibly have without hurting myself. It actually is quite fun...I am going to check out an aqua step class tomorrow in a nearby aqua center that a friend told me about (they had been doing "finning" - a 45 minute workout with fins on your feet!!)

Is that indoors? I might try a similar class after it gets a bit warmer - all the nearby pools are outdoors and not heated (not enough for me anyway!)
I am still walking 3 days a week since Nov. 1 and have lost 28 lbs (also reduced my fat intake and increased my fruits and vegetables.) I think the swimming would be great to add to my routine and help build overall body strength.
-
Congrats on the weight loss Karol - that's awesome!!!! :thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup; The classes I go to are held at area schools, one is just down the street. They are indoors; all of the area high schools and most junior high schools have indoor pools for gym classes and swim teams, along with community events. There aren't any outdoor public pools in our area because of the climate - we had snow just about every day last week, and I will be happy to see 40 degree temp in the next day or so!
-
Nice going, karol!
I'm still plugging away on my exercise machine when I can, and trying to eat less junk. It must be working - I'm down 15 pounds in the last year, for a total weight loss of 30 pounds in the last 18 months. It's still dropping off slowly - about a pound a month. My transplant surgeon was quite happy - they had requested I drop 20 pounds at my first transplant evaluation, and I've managed 15 of that by my one year return check-up.
-
:yahoo; :bandance; :clap; :2thumbsup; Good for you jbeany! :yahoo; :bandance; :clap; :2thumbsup;

Lets not and say we did. :thumbup;

I've ridden my exercise bike for 15 minutes on Tues, Wed, Thurs a total of 45 minutes
I do not want to do too much at one time :lol; :lol;

Every calorie burned helps, twirl! Some days I don't do much more than 15 minutes either, but it adds up.

Apparently, my weight loss has hit a wall. I've lost nothing at all this month - nary a pound. So I decided to amp up my exercise. I've got a mile square to run around on the roads here. The back block is actually a dirt road with no houses. So today I walked briskly the first leg of the square, and when I got to the back road with no witnesses, I tried jogging. ( If I'm going to make a fool of myself, I'd prefer to do it without an audience!) I managed half the block before I had to drop back to a walk. I was a bit slow walking the rest of the way home, but eventually caught my breath back and sped up again. Tomorrow's goal - 3/4 of the block. When I get to the point where I can run without wheezing like a steam engine, I might even try it in front of the neighbors.
On the plus side, I did work up a really good sweat - more water for me! :bandance;
-
Hey Kim, I just stumbled on this. Great idea for a thread. I belong to a gym and I try to go a minimum of 3 days a week but I go every day I can. I have a nice group of friends there and we always sit afterwards and socialize a bit. I just had my access done on Monday so I'm off weights but I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes today at 3.5 pace. Yesterday I felt really nauseous after only 10 minutes so I was pretty happy about today.
Keep it up everyone. I always say I'm in training for a transplant.
-
Well, I didn't manage 3/4 of the block - but I did manage to get out there and do it again! Maybe I'll stick with half a block of jogging for the first little bit. Wow, am I sore! My shins are not happy with me, but I'm ignoring them!
-
We are going for a walk today around the block. What a thrill!
-
My daughter and I are now on a routine - we drive to the athletic track in town 5 mornings a week. I just walk about 4 times around the track- she walks, jogs, racewalks, and does exercises. The companies over here have this big yearly sporting challenge, and she has been asked to do the swimming leg of a triathalon (600 metres swim). she has not swum competitively for many years, so this morning we went for a session at a beach. Now our morning exercise schedule will be TTS - beach, MF athletic track, W-she has a class with a swimming pro.
-
Nope, instead we walked around Costco and bought things.
-
Around the block would have been cheaper, kit - but pushing a cart around a superstore counts as exercise!
-
I can jog 3/4 of the block now, so I'm making a bit of progress. I had to stop going every day, though. I was over tiring myself to the point that I was ending up puking too often again. (The gastroparesis kicks in when I overdo the exercise.) So I'm alternating now - jogging/walking one day, and 30 minutes on my ski machine at a moderate pace the next. the weight doesn't seem to be budging - but I feel good, so I'm still trying.
This weekend, I skipped my regular jog/walk session and went on a nature hike instead. One of the local historic sites added an adventure park, and I took my friend's 12 yr old daughter with me so we could climb the treetop canopy bridge and fly down the zip line. It was their opening weekend, so it was only 50 cents to get in the park, and another 5 dollars to do the adventure tour. It was wonderful! The canopy bridge was an amazing sight - 40 feet over a creek on a bridge of steel cable, rope and 2x12's to walk on. It looked like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. Then we hiked around to the zip line platform. I volunteered to go first in my group - no one else wanted to! Love the part where the trail guide says "Okay, now walk off the edge of the platform," and we're 30 feet in the air. ;D One quick step and then I'm zipping down the line across the lake, and it felt just like flying!

OMG that sounds like SO much fun, I love nature trails, there isn't any around here tho, we have so much nature no one thought to put a trail in it.
Awesome for you Jbeany :2thumbsup;

Good for you! That looks like lots of fun JB! :waving;
Here are some tips I just got in an email:
The Importance of Walking
1. Walking adds years to your life. If you are 50 and you walk, you feel like 60.
2. It is well documented that for every mile you walk, you add one minute to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month.
3. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 now and we don't know where the hell she is.
4. The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.
5. I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.
6. I have to walk early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.
7. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
8. I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
9. The advantage of walking every day is that you die healthier.
10. If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
And last but not least:
11. Don't jog; it makes the ice jump right out of your glass.
;D

This is my third week back at the gym after a years' hiatus. I used to use all the machines, but now with the PD catheter I'm afraid to strain those abs so I just walk on the treadmill. I've slowly worked my way up to 3 miles (I started at about 2.25 and worked my way up over the last 3 weeks) and today I did 3.15. I do the hill setting and just work it out. I can't believe how much better I feel. Now...onward to my next goal: 4 miles!!! :bandance;
-
I am starting PD next week, and I was wondering what I could do for exercise...
-
I am starting PD next week, and I was wondering what I could do for exercise...
Yoo hoo - anyone on PD gonna answer this? I'm on hemo, with a nerve damaged arm, so I can do lots with the lower half of my body - not sure what limitations there are on PD. I'm not picturing doing crunches with a belly full of fluid, though. . . .
I've been playing with the nearly new treadmill that my sister gave me. It has a "weight loss" program that will kick your butt! Automatic changes in incline and speed until you are a sweaty little puddle at the end of the roller. Whew! Although with the nasty cold I've got right now, I thought I was doing well with a nice slow 2 mph walk for a while.

I was told there is no limit except how much you lift if your lifting weight. Do all the cardio you want and low impact weights.

I am now home, and have begun to walk again. THanks for the advice :)

My nutritionist said "No one ever got fat eating fruits, vegetables and chicken."
The walking really helped me too, and the fruit and protein makes me feel full most of the time.

I participated in a study by Avon and Curves. I just completed a month and decided to join. I did 18 workouts in a month. The study asked for participants to exercise at least 3 times a week. I only lost a pound and a half, but I lost a total of 5.25 inches. I do feel stronger. When I was exercising in my basement I did not get results like this. I enjoy the time to myself. My Ritalin usage has gone way down. :2thumbsup;
I am curious to see my labs this month. My cholesterol was good before I started, but my triglycerides were up. I want to see if that number came down at all. I know my anti rejection drugs have something to do with triglyceride levels.

Good for you Romona!

in pool for an hour today
never stopped moving
played keep away from my cow dog and that is hard - he loves to swim and rescue--- rather you want to or not
-
Walked in the arroyo for 90 minutes (it's a dirt path, easier on the joints) and it's heating up outside, so glad I got it done early.
-
I rode my bike to the gas station yesterday... I finally found something I can do without hurting my ankles (like with walking.) however, I realized how out of shape I was because so many of the times on the way there (uphill) I wanted to just quit but I didn't and I pulled through.
How long do I have to do this before I start to build stamina again? I hate feeling so out of breath and can barely move my legs riding!
-
in the pool again today - never stopping - little over an hour
with children, pets, and Trasie
very hot outside
walked around pool one time and said---poo on it, the water is cool and way more fun

It took me about 2-3 weeks I think. I still am breathing hard on the treadmill, but that's because I'm working hard on purpose. When I'm out for a regular walk and encounter a hill it's a breee now!
Today I'm going to (attempt to) play tennis for the first time in several years. I'm really looking forward to it and it's a nice cool day so it should be enjoyable.
-
Thanks :)
Have fun with tennis!

I'm up to 50 minutes of aqua aerobics every day. Missed yesterday, but did 20 minutes in a lake and did a 20 minute walk (too hot for more!)
-
Help!
I want to start moving! I am such a tired old bag all the time and today is the day!
NO MORE.
I don't like walking much ... my choints are sore and I am too tired....
Please tell me how much to do to start off.... Even if I walk to the end of the (very short) street and back.... I want too.....
Please help me set up a program.
-
Des, you don't have to walk far - even a few minutes around the yard, it's a start.
Got little weights? Or a couple of small water bottles or even two jars of canned food. Put them by the tv, and do some weight lifting while you watch.
Maybe try some yoga? You don't have to walk to do it, and the stretching is good for the joints. Lots of DVD's out there with basic moves. Check your local library - they might have some you could try for free.
-
Des - just a little walk to the end of your driveway and back is a start. Do you have access to a stationary bike? I'm going to get one, cos I can't go for long walks. Think of planning two really small walks tomorrow and see how you go. Don't overdo it at first. Swimming is really good - can you swim? I can't unfortunately cos I do PD. That's why I'm so jealous of Aleta's pool.
-
August 19th? Hasn't anyone been exercising since then? Yeesh!
I'm back on my treadmill again. After all that bedrest, I have no muscles left! I used to do intervals of running and power walking for half an hour most days. I managed a plodding pace for 15 minutes today. Ah, well, that's where I started when I got the treadmill. I'll just have to work my way back up!
-
Man , you really are an inspiration to all of us. I am still battling to get over my 15min.... time... but I am going faster now.
-
Good on ya! Six weeks ago, I couldn't walk to the letterbox. Yesterday, I went for a 45 minute walk and climbed 240 steps. Feels great to be moving again!
-
:bump;
Let's all join in!

-
I'm back up to 3 miles an hour - still no running with the open wound, but at least a good walking pace. I alternate between 1 mile and 2 mile days now.
-
I've added a new component to my upper body workout which involves a long, heavy, very thick rope that is threaded through a couple of kettle drums on the floor to keep it in place. You stand about 10 feet away from the kettles with an end of rope in each hand and snap the rope up and down or outwards. It's a great cardio workout that doesn't involve the legs but tones the arms at the same time. Except for the rowing machine, all my other cardio workouts, treadmill, various ellipticals, and cycling all work the legs so I'm happy to have found this new thing. I can't do it for very long and I leave it for the end because it really tires me out. Introduced two friends to it today and they liked it too.
Did a full two hour workout today and am so grateful when I think of just one year ago when everything was so difficult.
-
I am SO glad to know that I am not the only one that has had to start out plodding along on the treadmill. I just started (had to get a treadmill). I knew my muscles were shot...but dang, I didn't know they were barely carrying me around.
I've started on the treadmill and started "opting out" of using elevators when I go to clinic. (Third floor). Thought I was going to need CPR last Tuesday when I got up there.
Maybe this sticking with this thread will be an inspiration....as all of you are!
-
Best friend moving + upstairs apartment = no need for a cardio or treadmill workout. Ouch!
-
What a great thread!! I just recently started going to the gym. My neighbor friend and I joined at around the same time, and go together whenever we can. I have also bumped into a co-worker there, and also bumped into a mutual friend. I say, the more people I know who go there, the better! I have also hired a personal trainer whom I work with once a week. My goal is to build up my stamina/endurance, strengthen my heart, muscles and bones, and have a general, overall feeling of health and well being. I am still in stage 4 ckd, but I don't want my disease to "win", so to speak. I want to beat it in the bud, and be one of those people who can out-do what a "normal" person does in a day! I don't want to over-do it, however.
Today, I did 3 miles on the treadmill in under an hour, non-stop. I didn't do much of an incline, and tried to keep my heartrate at around 120-130. I am also doing some mild weight training. I want toned legs, arms, and a butt you can bounce quarters off of! :rofl;
KarenInWA
-
Nice job on the treadmill, Karen.
Where I come from, bouncing quarters is a drinking game, not an exercise goal, though!
-
I fell of the exercising. I caught a cold a few months back and have not had the energy to get going again.
-
It always takes a while to get back into the swing of things after being sick.
Happened to me a few months ago.

Mike walks 30 mins a day, most days. Has just started running for a little bit afterwards. He also does 40 minutes of weight training, and thinking of starting yoga soon.

I am trying to walk more, have to get out early because it's HOT here.
My back was hurting for a week, so now I am stretching too.
-
My working out has been put on hold temporarily by me. Due to the daylight savings time change, having to work OT at my job, and having low hbg/hematocrit which has now qualified me for epo shots. Yikes! Hoping to get back on the band wagon once things get a little bit back to normal... (what is "normal"? :urcrazy; )

Went for a 45 minute walk this morning. First for a while. Pulled up OK.
-
I went to the gym tonight- 15 minutes on the bike, 10 minutes on the treadmill, 10 laps running in the pool. A little arm work out on two machines.
-
Wow, you guys are brilliant! :2thumbsup;
-
Glad to hear you're back at it Kitkatz. It is hard to return after much time away but hopefully it'll soon be routine once again.
I did the best Pilates class yesterday and noticed some serious improvements. I now do my abdominal rollups on the most intense position and as slow as molasses. No problem at all. Also managed the plank with pushups for about 5 reps, which isn't great but since I could do none before, I'm happy and the instructor told me afterwards that my form was really good. I'm sore everywhere this morning so today I'll do straight cardio, no weights...elliptical, bike, rowing for 20 minutes each and then a 5 minute killer arm workout with the heavy ropes.
-
OK I will go out dancing tonight, I need to move around, my butt is getting big. Yee Haw!
-
:rofl;
-
Hahaha! :rofl; Keep dancin! :bandance;
-
My skin graft took well enough that I can restart on my treadmill, at least walking slowly. Hurray!
-
In the category of what I can still do i went out with a singles meetup.com group and went bowling. I suck at bowling but i had fun trying.
the day before i took a walk around the neighbor hood - well actually more of a shuffle - anybody else here feel like you shuffle like a feeble old lady like me??
-
If you already have the shuffle down, maybe it's time to try tap dancing.... ;D
Shuffling counts as exercise, though!
-
Have done clogging that's kinda like tap

Thanks to the encouragement and information from IHDers I am gonna work on reclaiming my inner athlete. I need to work with my neph to get my hemocrit up as high as possible and make certain my iron is good . I can join the Y and work out with the seniors and do some home strenght excercisese based on my prior training experience. I miss riding my bicycle the most and hope to get the strength back to be able to at least ride the 5 miles to church and back.
I have to loose like 50 pounds to put me in better shape for transplant and get my blood pressure down.
thanks to my new pals here I now know I dont have to put up with being a overwieght weekling. :thx; :cheer: :flower;
-
I am walking 4 days a week for an hour and "trying" to do sit ups too! The weather has been perfect lately, but when it gets hotter I need to have a new plan!
-
I used to be able to walk 3 miles most days, but for whatever reason, my fistula surgery back in March really sapped my energy. I've slowly started walking again, and today I got back to three miles for the first time since my op. I have yet to walk three miles all in one go, though; today, I did it in two stints of 1.5 miles each. Yesterday I put down 3 HEAVY bags of mulch on my front garden beds, so I've been getting a good workout each day lately. The exercise really helps me sleep. Once it gets warm enough, I'm off to the pool! Yay!
-
I make this Whey Protein Ice Cream to eat after a hard workout.
When I perfect it, I'll post it for all to enjoy!

Zach, thanks for posting that link; I went through and read all of the articles and it has inspired me to keep on exercising! I especially liked the article about the importance of exercising the major muscles of the legs. It has been so incredibly hot and humid here in Chicagoland, plus the mosquitoes have been diabolical because of recent flooding, so I have not exercised as much as I should have. I swim most days, though...swimming makes my fistula hum like crazy...it's really bizarre. I am eagerly awaiting cooler weather so that I can get back into my routine.
-
I had been lax on my walking routine this summer because I had hurt my knee. I am glad I gave it time to heal (it's much better) so today I started walking again. I walked for an hour and it felt great!
-
I am very fortunate that here in Seattle the Northwest Kidney Center subsidizes my membership to my nearby YMCA. Its a brand new 2008 facility with a great pool.
My new love is water aerobics. Even though I have been through months of hospitalization and rehab in the past six months (shattered knee and septicimia) in my first class today I was able to pretty much keep up. It was a great work out as felt a little tired afterwards and my muscles were kinda talking to me but it felt great to move again.
Not being able to move due to my knee injury has not only taught me the necessity of movement but also the pleasure and priviledge.

Yes - You Should Exercise to help Kidney Disease!
Exercise to help kidney disease
Did you know that you can exercise to help kidney disease and improve kidney health? Exercise is seldom considered as a necessary component of kidney failure treatment, but it should be. Research has shown that an inactive lifestyle in adults increases the risk of many diseases, including kidney disease. Of course, exercise alone cannot guarantee optimum health, but it certainly is a major contributor. We will look at some of the benefits of exercise and offer some suggestions on how you can get started.
Most people are aware that exercise can help cardiovascular diseases, strokes, circulatory problems, etc... but not many people know that they should also exercise to help kidney disease. Exercise has a profound impact on health and well-being. Regardless of your health and fitness status, it is possible for you to improve your overall well being and health with regular exercise. While we will be mainly focused on exercise to help kidney disease, some other benefits of regular exercise include:
* Increased energy. If you exercise regularly, over a period of time you will develop greater resistance to fatigue and your energy will increase.
* Help in dealing with stress. Exercise relieves tension which enables you to relax and feel less tense.
* Improved ability to sleep. As tension in your body diminishes and you begins to relax, you will go to sleep much quicker and sleep more soundly.
* Improved overall daily functioning. As your fitness improves, your capacity to perform daily tasks at school, home or on the job will increase.
* Improved appearance. As you burn extra calories and your muscles become firmer, it becomes easier to control your weight thus improving your overall appearance.
* Improved overall health. There are many health benefits to be gained from regular exercise. As oxygen is transported more efficiently around the body, circulation improves, the heart becomes stronger, blood pressure is lowered, and your body is better equipped to fight off diseases.
Exercise to help Kidney Disease
What is the connection between exercise and kidney disease? Just imagine for a moment a pound fill with water that remains stagnant for a long period of time. After a while the water becomes discolored, as moss and other pollutants accumulate in it. Contrast that with a fountain that is constantly spouting and moving the water around. It looks a lot cleaner, healthier, and alive. There is less build-up of moss and other pollutants.
This analogy gives a good idea of what happens in the body when we fail to exercise compared to when we exercise regularly. As the blood and other substances are stirred by exercise, toxins and other waste products are eliminated more efficiently and circulation and other metabolic functions improve. This allows oxygen and essential nutrients to be transported more efficiently around the body, resulting in better overall health.
So indeed, you should exercise to help kidney disease, heart disease, circulation problems, reduce stress… and more. Kidney disease is largely a lifestyle disease (meaning it can be prevented by changing lifestyle habits).

I just started a Couch-to-5K (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) running program along with a very good friend. It's slightly difficult to run together, since she's across the country, so we (and our friends) are keeping each other accountable with a running log blog, Two Bros One Couch-to-5K (http://2bros1c25k.wordpress.com/).
I'm running MWF right before dialysis. It probably makes the running harder, but it makes sitting through dialysis easier.
-
Excellent!

I've been trying to run for two and a half weeks now. My joints haven't been taking it well. They've been sore and stiff for the last 2 weeks.
I just had my monthly labs drawn, and my hemoglobin is down to 9-point-something, after months of 13+ numbers. Nothing has really changed except for my exercising. I remember from PD that any inflammation can make EPO less effective. Has anyone else heard that? Could my aching joints and sore muscles be causing my hemoglobin to plummet?
-
:bump;
-
Restorer,
I know it's a little late to respond.
But the more you exercise the more red blood cells you are killing so you need more EPO. Work with your doctor. The cramps in the legs and joints could also be low iron, so get the checked.
-
Is anyone doing any exercise outdoors in this heat? I refuse to join a gym. Not gonna happen. I walk, swim, cycle and snowshoe, plus I have free weights that I work with. Being outdoors is all part of the joy of exercise for me, so I am incredibly frustrated that I feel very very wary about just walking in this diabolical heat. It's expected to be 105 tomorrow here in the western burbs of Chicago, and that's dangerous for anyone. What are you all doing to stay fit in the heatwave? Any ideas for me? I'm not doing any strength training at the moment; that will be possible in a few weeks, so I'm pretty much limited to regular walks up and down the stairs. Dull as dishwater.
-
I like the gym. A lot. I try to get there every morning I can and I like the variety of cardio exercise available to me...3 types of elliptical machines, treadmill, bike (recumbent and regular), rowing machine. I aim for an hour of varied stuff. Then there are the classes if one likes those, I've done pilates and yoga but prefer going solo. I do a half hour of weights, free and machines and finish with stretches and abdominals. On Tuesdays and Fridays I do an hour to an hour and a half of exercises on the pilates reformer (really love this) and I also have many friends there so it's a pretty important social place for me too.
I also aim to get out in the evening (I seriously avoid sun) for an hour of walking in my neighbourhood. Gardening is also on the program but certain times of the year are more rigorous by far than others.
The one absolute about my gym attendance is frequent hand washing and a thorough hand scrub and sanitizing as the last thing before leaving. I use weight gloves for rowing and weights.
Maybe you'd like a pilates tape to do at home MM.
-
I love working out outside. I bought a bike this year and I bike 30-40 km a day but I try to go out early morning or evening when the sun isn't the hottest and the uv is down. I do not work out if it's above 35C (95F) I did it once and went through a 1 liters of water due to sweating and I was tired the rest of the day. During heatwaves I try to do something indoors.
-
But the more you exercise the more red blood cells you are killing so you need more EPO.
Do you have a link to that information?

It has finally cooled off enough that I can get outside and start walking again. Yesterday was my first day out, and I walked 2 and a half miles split between two sessions. I'm really pleased about that. I will start walking each evening and try to cover at least that distance if at all possible. I'm eager to start doing strength work again, but I have to be a bit patient about that. I'm even more eager to be able to begin swimming again.
-
MooseMom that's awesome.. Keep up the good work.
Remember slow and steady wins the race.. so don't push yourself too hard.
-
Thanks, Rain. I appreciate the couragement. I have another post dinner walk scheduled for this evening. I'm not sure I'll have the time to put in 2 miles, but anything is better than nothing. I'm just so glad that the weather has cooled.
-
MUST.SET.UP.TREADMILL. It's cool in the basement, so I'd have no excuse in this crazy heat.

LOL!
Although it seems to me that with all of your house remodelling, you're getting plenty of exercise with activities that actually accomplish something.

Well, I did what I could. I went downstairs after dinner and got to work. Moved all the boxes and furniture into the other half of the room, swept and scrubbed the floor, moved the furniture back, put the treadmill in place, and went to plug it in. No 3-prong outlets in the rec room. So, not today. I have to wait until it's daylight before I shut the power out down there, or I'll trip over something and break an ankle while I have the power shut off.
-
No 3-prong outlets in the rec room. So, not today.
Yeah, yeah..."no 3-prong outlets..." Uh huh. :P
-
LOL! My computer is plugged in with a giant orange extension cord that runs from the office to the living room. Apparently, the last owner only changed the ones he needed for his TV and stereo and didn't touch the rest. I can't even plug in stuff with two different sized plugs in some places, the outlets are so old! My BIL insisted he was going to change them for me, but still hasn't after 2 months, so I'm going to learn to do it myself. My Better Homes and Garden book insists it only takes 10 minutes a plug. Uh huh. We'll see how long it takes with 60 year old wiring that isn't color coded....
-
Well, jbeany, at least your brain is getting a massive workout!
I completed a 2.63 mile walk this morning all in one go, so I'm pretty stoked about that. I'm only 2 weeks post surgery, so I'm pretty proud of myself. It wasn't at my usual fast pace, but it was at least fast enough for my pedometer to register it as "aerobic steps". It felt really good to get outside and walk.
-
I am so happy at the amount of exercise I'm getting while on vacation. We spent 11 hours outside walking and seeing the sight since we are on the west coast and the temperature is comfortable. And tomorrow I'm going on a 30 km bike ride.
My boyfriend made a comment today while walking that it's like i do not have kidney problems. It did take 5 years of training to get back into shape and I still have my off days.
-
Rain, that is outstanding!! I'm well impressed! It's OK to have an off day. Just listen to your body...
Speaking of listening to your body, mine yelled at me after my epic walk the other day. I did too much too soon, and the result was that I was a right waste of space the rest of the day. I had to force myself up off the couch to get anything done. So today, I walked just a mile and a half and hopefully will get another walk in this evening. Maybe breaking it up will be smarter. But I am really struggling with the heat. I got out at 9:45 and it was already both hot and humid, a combination I loathe. But I did get my mile and a half in, so I'm going to rest on those laurels for a while. LOL!
I have to slather myself with sunscreen, and that makes me sweat. Ugh.
I got clearance to lift up to 20 pounds, so I can start back with some light strength training. Don't have clearance yet to resume swimming, but that should come in a couple of weeks once I get the rest of my staples out.
Rain, I hope you enjoy your bike ride. I can't wait to hear about it! And those comfortable temps! I'm so envious!
-
"Want to join me in exercise?"
No!!!!!!
Are you nuts?
-
The bike ride was awesome best $18 I spent. We rented bikes and biked along the sea wall for 2 hours. The view was amazing with ships and mountains. The good thing was I wasn't even sore, my boyfriend was cause its been 15 years since he has been on a bike. Once I get back home I will post a photo.
-
Rain, that sounds just so wonderful. I'm glad you had such a brilliant time. Can't wait for the photos!

I think I am going to walk to the library today - it's a bit over a mile each way. I can bring my parasol and my spray bottle/fan, plus a few drinks and should be able to survive the heat.
I have resolved that if nothing else, I am going to try to do a minimum of 3 activities on the Wii Fit everyday. I like the KungFu because it's a good, gentle warm-up, then the jogging after the cat bit and finally the boxing. If I do the easiest levels of each, it will take me about 10 minutes. If I have more time I will do the more advanced ones and I will skip it if I manage to work other exercise into the day. The boxing is quite a good workout, and there are activities I have not even tried on there. I am surprised how much I enjoy the Wii Fit. It is a great substitute for a gym and I can squeeze it in late at night or first thing in the morning.
I also like the Dance Dance Revolution game, but one of our mats has died so I cannot do a competition with the boys, which is a blast. We'll have to repurchase in the UK.

My two roommates and I moved our entire 3 bedroom apartment into a 2 bedroom apartment in 3 days. Does that count as exercise? :Kit n Stik;
I ignored my fluid limit the entire weekend - drank at least half a gallon on Sunday. I was sweating so much I still came in only 1.7 kilos over my dry weight.
-
Okay, my treadmill is set up in the basement, the tv is hooked up, and the antenna is run up through the floor and mounted behind the living room curtains on the floor above so I can get some reception. ('Cause watching cooking shows while working out is soooo helpful! >:D )
So I alternated walking and jogging for a mile today. I've learned that I need a throw rug under the treadmill if I plan to run on it - it squeaks something awful on the tile floor. I also learned that my destroyed abdominal muscles have finally healed enough that jogging doesn't leave me instantly whimpering in pain anymore. :yahoo; Not that I can go for long, and it's still uncomfortable, but it's better by far.
Finally, I learned that even the cool air in the basement isn't cool enough when it's 95 degrees out. :P
-
I'm really glad that you have healed even more than you realized.
And oh dear Lord, it IS awfully hot.
-
You guys are making me want to get back in the habit of going to the gym :2thumbsup;
-
sorry it took so long to post the photo of me biking out west. I've just been busy.
The sleeve on my arms is where my fistula is, to protect it from the sun and people's stares.
-
I ain't going to the gym; no how, no way.
And that's da thruth!

You look great Rain! :2thumbsup;

Rain, what a great photo! You look like you're having so much fun.
I cannot WAIT for this heat to abate. We're under an excessive heat warning and are also in a severe drought. As much as I enjoy my outdoor exercising, I just cannot stand this heat. I can't do it. Just can't.
-
I understand what you mean. We are under extreme drought as well. We had a sever storm the first sign of any rain in 4 weeks on Monday. But it hasnt cooled down any still in the high 30's early 40's degrees Celsius. If i do go out I try to go out early in the morning when the sun isn't that hot and it's a few degrees cooler. I also bring plenty of water. One day a drank and extra liter of water over my limit and on dialysis I only had to lose 700 ml of fluid.
Also after living in the city for 11 years, I finally bought myself an air conditioner this year since at night it was still hot, and we didn't get much sleep. I started putting ice packs under my pillow at night..
-
how is everyone doing with there exercise? This is my last week off before work and so far I've been exercising every day for 1-1.5 hours. Monday and Tuesday i went biking and this morning I got a free week pass at the gym to try out and I'm heading there. If I like the gym I will sign up for the winter months. I would hate to loss all the work I did this summer with biking. Since I've been out of work for 3 weeks now due to vacation and have gotten lots of rest and exercise I feel great.
Now just to figure out how I could keep this up with the new job and all without burn out. These are the days I wish I didn't have dialysis.

The heat has moderated up here, finally, so for the past several days, I have been able to get my 2 miles in as long as I do it before 11AM. We are supposed to get even cooler weather for a few days before it may get back up close to 90F, so I am looking forward to getting my daily walk for at least the rest of this week.
I now have clearance to begin swimming again (ha..just as the temps are getting cooler!), but I was told that I may feel a bit of pressure so I should just be wary and not let myself get uncomfortable. Fortunately, the surgeon thinks I'm smart enough to be able to judge what is best for me. I think I have a bad muscle strain down real low. I have a sharp, excruciating pain only when I try to turn over in bed. I can walk 2 miles and feel fine, but try to turn over in bed and OMG, it feels like something is tearing. I was hoping that getting my stent out yesterday would have solved the problem, but no. Last night I experienced the same pain, but this time I was extremely careful in finding a comfy sleeping position. I told the surgeon about this pain, and he examined me but found nothing (no hernia or anything like that). He said that whatever it was was not kidney related, so at least there's that. But he told me to take it easy for the next 2-3 weeks, but I don't know what that means. ::) He reminded me that there was still "a lot of healing going on"; I suppose it is easy to underestimate the trauma the body endures from major surgery. So, I guess it means to just move very very slowly while searching for a comfortable sleeping position, so at the very first sign of that excruciating pain, I stop and try to move in a different way.
Rain, I hope you find an exercise schedule that is beneficial but still works well with your job. So much to juggle! I'm thrilled to hear that rest and exercise has made you feel so good. That's terrific! Keep it up (although I know that's hard to do when you have to work).
Truly, this muscle pain feels more like a tear than a mere muscle pull; I've never felt anything like it, and it is waaaaay more painful than anything related to surgery. It's very odd and has been hurting for only the past 4-5 days. I can't imagine what I did to myself that resulting in this. But it doesn't keep me from walking, and hopefully it won't keep me from swimming. I am hoping to get back to the pool on Monday. I'll only have three weeks of swimming left before the pool closes for the season. I had bought two new swimsuits that I haven't been able to use yet! LOL!

Moosemom
Be careful swimming and that it slow at the first sight of pain stop since you don't want to hurt yourself. Is it by the incision site? It might be the muscle hasn't heal yet. Have you also looked at public pools for the fall/ winter. I am planning on signing up for private swim lessons for 6 weeks starting in the fall since biking season will be done. I have also thought of signing up for spinning lessons.
-
Actually, no, the pain isn't at the incision site. It's to the right of it. Believe me, I don't think there is anything to be gained from "fighting through the pain." When I do return to swimming, I will be extremely careful.
Call it a looney prejudice of mine, but I intensely dislike indoor public swimming pools. Having grown up in the South and practically living in my best friend's outdoor pool every summer, in my mind, swimming is something that you do outdoors. I had never even BEEN in an indoor pool until I moved to Chicago 9 years ago. There is a nice Health and Wellness center on the campus of our local community hospital that has a big indoor pool, but ugh...I don't like the idea of swimming in all of those chemicals and germs that inhabit humid indoor facilities. I know that sounds stupid, and maybe I will change my mind, but for now, I'll stick with exercising outdoors. That becomes a problem only once we start getting ice on the roads. I have fallen several times on black ice, and I don't want to do that again, so I may very well sign up at the wellness center so that I can have access to their machines. Like I've said before, I'd like to get back to doing some strength training and have used all of the various machines in the past, but I think I will wait a bit on that. I have a clinic appt early January, and I'll bring up the subject then. I might even arrange for a session or two with a personal trainer just for some preliminary guidance, but that's in the future. For now, I'll just keep walking, add some cycling and also add some strength training with some 10 lbs weights, which is my limit at the moment.
About 12 years ago, I did a weekly Pilates class, and each time I'd end up with a stonking great headache. Same with yoga. I really liked the classes, but they'd make me feel awful afterwards. Isn't that bizarre?
Rain, let me know if you take those swim lessons. I love swimming. It's a good workout, it spares your joints AND the feel of the water is relaxing. The weight of the water and the resistance it provides makes your muscles really work. I hope you'll enjoy it. I've never tried swimming and would be very interested to hear what you make of it if you decide to do it.
-
MM I've had those muscle pulls (more than once I'll add) and the pain is awful. Exactly as you describe, triggered by turning over or, for me, by raising a leg on one particular occasion. So bad this was that I went to the ER in the middle of the night, just prior to the Vegas meetup last year. Anyhow, I do pretty strenuous workouts on the Pilates reformer machine and ab work with weights etc. Our abdominal muscles have been sliced open, mine a total of four times to date, and I think we can strain them fairly easily. I work a lot on my core trying to regain strength there and I try to go a little easy but that's a challenge for me. Hope you heal up soon. Keep exercising but don't do anything that triggers even a twinge in the strained area.
PS..I thought I had a hernia too. Nope, pulled muscles, that was all.
-
Monrein, thanks so much for your post; it has made me feel better (although I regret that you've ever had any pain!), and you are right...I have to remind myself that my muscles have indeed been sliced through and that it does take time to heal. When I turn over in bed, I have to tuck my knees up to ease any pressure on those really low abdominal muscles, and even though it is awkward, it does seem to help. I want to return to exercising my core abdominal muscles; I wanted to ask the surgeon his advice in this regard when I was at the clinic yesterday, but my husband was teaching in the evening and we were already running late as it was. I didn't think I was ready for that sort of workout anyway, so I'll save the question for my next clinic visit. For now, I'll concentrate on regain strength in my legs and also on cardio work. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement!

MM:
Have started serious powerlifting regimen.Bench presses have made my boobs sore. What do I do now?
-
Keep pressing Gerald, the lactic acid works its way out after a couple of days.

Moosemom, I did swimming lessons in the past about 4 years ago. I started with a group class to learn the. A basics and it was fun but it didnt get much swim time. Then I did a session of private and love it. the first 10 mins is exercise drill kicking legs only and the instructor watches your form and corrects you. I got Better, stronger and faster. I started swimming to get back into fitness 4 years ago after a year of dialysis ruined my muscles and I had gained weight from being depressed and sedentary. Swimming also got me off my BP meds. Swimming was my gate way back to my pre dialysis self.
I have to admit that I am finally at my pre dialysis fitness level and my goal this winter it to stay there. It takes a lot of work to maintain since I have to get at least 3 hours in a week to maintain. But it's worth it since I could now keep up with everyone. I could spend the whole day out and not get tired.
I do have 1 fitness goal and this spring I want to run my first 5 km. I entered 2 x 5 km this fall but I plan on walk most of it with a colleague.

Great to hear you're excercising (a bit) Moosey. So pleased as I assume (without reading about through recent posts) that maybe that means you are going okay. Gregory walks every night, I highly recommend it. :beer1;

What a lot of responses! Excellent idea!
I will post as well. So far I have been a huge failure, cause I always mean to work out in the morning, than sleep until nearly the last second. I tried going to bed early yesterday and will try again (couldn't fall asleep, cats wee attacking me).
Great idea!
might I also suggest going to dailyfeats.com?. You earn points toward gift certificates by doing good deeds. It's free and helps you keep track of developing good habits.

2 miles every day now for a week! Between that and watching my diet, I'm down 6 pounds so far. :yahoo;
My new kittens are mystified by the whole treadmill thing, though. Murphy keeps trying to stand on it, and ends up thumping into the wall when he can't move fast enough to keep up. Dora prefers I just hold her and walk, although Murphy enjoys this as well . I suppose it's my fault for having always swayed back and forth while holding them like they were babies. They just think I'm doing it up and down instead of back and forth, and they go to sleep while I'm walking. :urcrazy; Of course, I wake them up when I start giggling. Laughing is good exercise, too, right?
-
How is everyone doing exercise wise?? We are starting to enter fall, and we can't get lazy, exercise is great.
I ended up jogging Monday as part of my training for my 5km in 2 weeks. I wanted to go out again yesterday but it rained, and it's raining again today, so I will be doing some jump rope inside as cardio with some weight lifting.
-
Still chugging along. The weight loss is suffering from toooooo many holiday treats, but I've managed to do some form of exercise nearly every day. The treadmill is still my choice when I'm home, but the kayaking over the weekend at the family cottage was a good substitute.
-
I had to post here... I was very proud of myself.. Today I did a 12 mile bike ride & its been a while since I have made time to exercise, especially since I hadn't been feeling myself the last few months!
Although last week at the beach I was able to get a lot of walking in.. so that counts too! :2thumbsup;
Good Luck All !

This seems like a great topic -- is there any interest in reviving it? Or is there a similar thread that's going currently?
Today, I started a "Couch to 5k" program at our local community center. I haven't run further than a block in somewhere around decades. And between kidney problems and anemia, I'm probably the least fit I've ever been. But, since all the pre-transplant tests have shown my heart's fine, I decided to give it a try again. The first week was going to start out walking. I figured I'd do OK with that -- walking is the one sort of exercise I've done consistently over the last few years. And the woman leading us was quite visibly pregnant -- so I was imagining a leisurely stroll. I could do this!
However, ... I tend to walk at my own pace. Or maybe it would be better to say "meander"? These folks are *serious*. The group took off walking, but it quickly became apparent that everyone but me and one other participant had done this before. (One of them was talking about the half-marathon she was planning to run....) They were all chatting away, and moving at a *very* brisk pace. I pretty much didn't say anything, mostly because it was all I could do to keep up. They (we?) walked 2.8 miles in just over 30 minutes. Whew! That's about twice as fast as I've been going lately. I was pleasantly surprised that I managed to make it -- I knew I could walk for half an hour, but given the choice I would probably go just over a mile. Still, straggling all the way, and a bit tired and sore after, but so far as I can tell, I survived it. Now to do it again, repeatedly. Oh, joy.
cheers,
skg
