Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. Being someone who was directly affected by this, I have been closley watching it as it goes through the steps to pass.
Support the Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage Extension
Kidney transplant recipients who are eligible for Medicare due to irreversible kidney failure, but who are not Medicare-aged or Medicare-disabled, lose their Medicare three years after the transplant. The Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act of 2013 (H.R. 1428 and S. 323) would continue access to Medicare indefinitely, but would cover anti-rejection medications only. All other Medicare would end after three years for kidney recipients, as under current law.

It is long overdue for this common sense, cost effective, humane law to be passed.
I believe that the for the first 3 year and over 65 and/or medically disabled still have to pay the 20% and can run you 20K/year. The over 65 group can qualify for Medicare D plans but they are confusing and subject to change along with having the doughnut hole that will always be encountered. The whole Medicare D program was written for the benefit of Big Pharma.
I have put my transplant status on hold for four years waiting that it might be part of Obamacare but a few years ago the large dialysis consortium was successful lobbying against the change.
Someday it will be passed but currently is not a big issue for Washington. They need to sell it as a cost saving program not just something of benevolence.
Once passed there will be another problem of a flood of people on the transplant list and they will be forced to address the problem of availability of kidneys.

Dman73, you can get a Part D program when you are under 65.
