Title: UK Patients looking for holiday dialysis within the UK?
Post by: Sugarlump on August 27, 2013, 05:50:06 AM
I am interested to know if other UK patients are having problems with
(a) rearranging their own shifts to say get away early for a weekend or flight time and
(b) finding a unit that can offer holiday dialysis within the UK near to where you want

there seems to be an acute shortage of dialysis places developing and our government doesn't seem to think it important enough to help patients
to access holidays/visit relatives/ attend functions etc.

When Blokey was on dialysis we didn't go away for long enough to have to find somewhere else to have dialysis.  This was purely because we couldn't be bothered with the hassle of arranging it all. However we managed a few weekends away and with enough notice they were usually happy for him to go in on a Friday morning instead of in the evening.  Sometimes they moaned but it helps that he had his dialysis at A which has quite a few beds, and an extra mini-dialysis ward off one of the other wards.

I think that more people in the UK are needing dialysis but hospitals aren't keeping up with the demand.  Our worry if Blokey does go back on dialysis is whether they'll be able to fit in with him (as a full-time worker/breadwinner) rather than him having to fit in with them.

We need a UK campaign to create more dialysis facilities  :ukflag;

We are going away for the weekend for my birthday (11th - 14th October) have rented a barn in Gloucestershire where we can take dogs and grandchildren along ... and I have managed to arrange one session of dialysis of Monday 14th at Gloucester Renal Unit so we don't have to belt home to get there in time for Monday dialysis but the biggest problem now, is making sure i get dialysis on Friday 11th morning before we leave as i do NOT want to be going round the M25 at 6pm in the evening...
I normally do 1pm-5pm Mon wed Fri  :bow;

Today I made an official complaint about my dialysis treatment. to centre manager, Chief Executive of The Hospital and my MP.
I have a funeral to go next Friday of a close family member and they are refusing to change my dialysis shift to allow me to go.
This is the third time a change has been refused.

I am sure it must be an infringement of the patient charter as well as my human rights...
My only alternative to attend is to miss a friday sessson and go from Wed to MOn????
We all know I can't do that without getting illl......

Am feeling aggrieved  :boxing;  :boxing;  :boxing;

Wow.  That's awful, Sugar.  Can you go to the local papers too?! If it's a case of just not being able to fit you in can they not see if they can get you in elsewhere just for that day (or Saturday morning)?

Such numpties.
