I just wanted to let this board know that my mother is in the hospital at the moment. She wasn't feeling well on Friday and went to the ER but they sent her home. Saturday, she was feeling worse and wasn't really responsive, so my father took her back. This time they admitted her and they think it's an infection. They got her on a respirator and it seemed to have perked her back up. That's all I know for now but please keep her in your thoughts and prayers for us.
When I know more, I'll post it or one of the members I have contact will when she gets the message.

Oh, dear. Thank you for letting us know. Send her my best wishes.

Hi everyone! I'm Anne, Kitkatz little sister. I just wanted to pop on here and let everyone know that Kitkatz is back in the hospital again.
She went into the ER Friday morning complaining of a serious stomach ache but the doctor's sent her home, saying it was indigestion. Her condition worsened overnight (spiking fever, more pain, unresponsive to questions) to the point where we finally had to call an ambulance yesterday morning. Thankfully, once they got her to the hospital and on fluids, meds, and oxygen, she started to perk up and talking to people again, though her fever is still pretty high.
The ER docs are now going on the theory that she has a serious infection so they tossed her into ICU and are dosing her with lots and lots of antibiotics while they wait for the rest of the lab results to come back.
We all had a really good scare yesterday and we're still not sure what's going on...so lots of prayers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Anne
PS - you're welcome to stick your well wishes on this thread and either Dani or I will make sure she gets them. Thanks!

UPDATE!!!! (Yes, already!)
After I posted this, I checked my email to see a late night update from her husband. Seems that now they think that either she has an infection in her belly or her appendix ruptured. (The appendix wouldn't surprise any of us - we were all screaming that one Friday, when she went into the ER and they sent her home.) They're talking surgery but don't want to do it until the antibiotics have had a chance to "kick in". They're afraid that opening her up now, with all of her medical issues and an infection raging crazy through her, could kill her.
Lordy lordy lordy...when it rains, it pours!
Anne

Auuugh! Idiot doctors. You tell her I said to get better and get up and kick the damn docs in the ass!

LOL Looks like we double posted, D.

As you can see, our family REALLY wanted all of you to know what's going on with Kitkatz. We know how much you guys love her. ;-)

Just talked to her husband via phone. They're discussing doing the surgery this afternoon but there are concerns about her viability.
Please cross your fingers and pray a lot for Ms. Kitkatz and for all of us who are supporting her. This was a seriously big scare for all of us - for her to go from "going to the gym and roughhousing with my 6 yo son" to "deathly sick" in a couple days was just another wakeup call to all of us about how fragile her health can be.
My mom and I are planning to go to the hospital after she returns from church to get an idea of what's going on and to visit. More info later.
Anne
PS - her daughter, Dani, started a thread in another section over here --> http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=29324.0 <-- so you might want to stick "notify" on that thread too...or a moderator might want to see if they can combine them. ;-)
-
Oh gosh, I'm troubled hearing this. Please give her our regards and prayers. We would appreciate as much updated information as possible! Thanks so much. :grouphug;

Oh no!....
Poor Katherine... I confess that I was worried about them sending her home on Fri... Renal/dialysis patients are made of strong stuff, and aren't going to go to an ER unless they feel that they're VERY unwell....
Please give her our love, and tell her to get well soon...
Love...

Maria sent me a message earlier asking me to post that KK was in the ICU and they thought she had either a burst appendix or a stomach infection. Surgery was a possibility. Poor Kitatz...never ending these awful events. I hope she's better soon.

Thank you for the updates. I just spent the day with Kitkatz on Wed. We had Japanese food for lunch, walked all over the top of the mountain here, and had Mexican food for dinner in Los Angeles. She was in great shape. This is quite a shock and I am hoping to hear more soon. :grouphug; :grouphug; :grouphug;

Hoping for a quick recovery, Kitkatz.

I hope it's not too confusing but I have now merged both threads from Kitkatz's sister and her daughter. Feel free to leave messages here for Kitkatz.

I just got back from the hospital and I don't know more than I did going in. The doctors are still running tests and trying to see when it will be safest time for surgery. She has some issues that can complicate it.
Annie is there with her now, hopefully she or my grandmother can get more out of the doctors.

Thoughts and prayers for kitkatz.

I'm sitting in the hospital room wiith Kitkatz now typing this on my tablet so please excuse any misspellings.
We were lucky to be here when a different surgeon came in to consult on her case. They are still waiting to get the official word on her echo and ekg but if they come back clean there is talk of going into surgery asap.
She's in good spirits when she's awake which isn't a lot right now. They are keeping her well medicated and doing dialysis daily to take off the liquid they are pumping into her and clean out the toxins from her blood. We're in a holding pattern until they decide she is stable enough to go under the knife. Until then they are doing what they can to keep her comfortable.

I am sure the other family members know more than I do at the moment. I spoke with my father and they have had her on a 12 hour watch to see if the antibiotics are working. I am heading there in a few and will hopefully have a better update when I know more.

Her youngest daughter, Maria, flew into So Cal around 11:30 last night and she and I spent most of last night at the hospital, sitting by Katherine's bedside. There hasn't been much change in her condition - not any improvement but at least there wasn't any decline - and we're all hoping that decisions will be made today to move this mess along.
Sorry this is a bit short. We didn't returned from the hospital until around 5:30 this morning and my 6 yo son was up at 6:30 so I'm working off of about an hour of sleep and my brain is now super crispy. Ugh. I'm going to go lay down for a bit and see if I can get some more sleep. I plan to return to the hospital tonight after my kids are in bed to give Victor a rest and visit a bit. Both of Kitkatz's kids are there with her along with Victor and various family friends who come in and out all day long. We're trying to make sure that she has someone around most of the time to keep an eye on things.
Dani or I will keep everyone update as we hear something!

Please get well soon, Kit. We want to see you at the next Vegas meet-up.

BIG UPDATE!!!!
Just got a call from Maria. The surgeon came in and said they had 2 choices - surgery or waiting and Katherine and the family (Victor and their daughters) agreed that it was time to see what the hell this was...so she's going into the OR ASAP for exploratory surgery. They're going to check out the major organs in her belly, her appendix, and a mysterious "bubble" of something around her appendix.
Mom and I are heading back to the hospital now to be with the family. Please send her lots of love and hugs. More updates to come!
-
Lets put our heads and hearts together and keep Kitkatz in our thoughts as she faces this challenge. Whatever focus we can bring, be it via prayer, energy, spirituality, or positive thinking - please send it to her now.
Thank you Soto/Keller family, for any updates.
:grouphug; :grouphug;
-
Sending prayers her way
-
Yes, Okarol -- all our hearts and heads together for our Kit. She sent me a cross when Barry was so sick and it stayed with us during every step. I have the cross out and keeping it by my side to focus while Kitkatz goes through this. Praying for good results from the surgery. Much love to KK and her family. :cuddle;
-
My thoughts are with you KitKatz- Hope they find out what they need to quickly so you can get well fast!!
-
She made it through surgery! It was a twisted bowel and part had to be removed. She is now in ICU stabilizing. :thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup; :thumbup;
-
Thanks for the info, Okarol. I'm glad to know they've located the problem and hopefully had it fixed.
-
Thank you Okarol. And giving much thanks that they figured this out and did the surgery. I've been holding my breath waiting for good news. Now prayers are for a good recovery. :cuddle; :cuddle;
-
Uuugh! Been there - that's excruciating!
-
:flower; If anyone would like Kitkatz's address to send her a card please let me know.
-
Now that I'm home, had food, got to spend a little time with my kids, and now have a beer in my hands, I think I can finally sit and type out what happened today. I'm praying that all of this will make sense to everyone - I've been up for the last 38 hours straight with only an hour long nap this morning, so I'm past fried right now. I'm sure the rest of the family will help to fill in the blanks as they come out of the "semi-consciousness" we were all in when we left the hospital this evening.
So, today's timeline -
10 AM - Surgeons and doctors had a powwow about her condition
11 AM-ish - Surgeon came in to talk to KK and the family. They were given 2 choices - 1) wait and see and 2) surgery. Considering all that KK has been through since Friday AM and that she'd been stable all night long, everyone voted surgery. They called me (I was home manning the phones and watching the kids) and mom and I made plans to get to the hospital ASAP.
12 noon-ish - Mom and I arrived to find that they hadn't taken her to the OR yet but were expected anytime. We joined the family in her ICU room waiting for the OR team to arrive.
1 PM-ish - the team rushed in, scooped her up, and hurried her off to the OR and we went to the waiting room to wait the next 3 hours on pins and needles.
4 PM-ish - The surgeon came out to talk to us. She said that KK had come through the surgery just fine and that she was in recovery. She would have to be on a ventilator for a day or so until her BP regulated and she could breath on her own. Until then she would be sedated, but her prognosis was good.
5 PM - She was rolled back into ICU room and we were able to get a quick peek at her before we headed home.
-----------------
And now, here comes THE REST of the STORY!
As some point late last week, my sister's lower intestine kinked or twisted, creating that excruciating pain she had late Thursday night / early Friday morning. As time passed, that piece of intestine died off and then split, literally spilling shit into her abdomen. Of course, this is a serious concern in itself but her body had somehow "walled off" the toxins to the lower right quadrant of her belly, stopping it from wandering around and causing even more trouble. Of course, that spot is the spot where her appendix was SUPPOSED to be! (They're guessing that during one of her earlier abdomen surgeries as a kid they decided to pop it off and either they never mentioned it to my mom or she didn't remember it.) So, there is the "suspicious infection or inflammation" around that area that concerned everyone.
The doctor did warn us that though the surgery was a great success, she is far from out of the woods. Even in healthy patients that have this issue, they have a high chance of getting worse in the first 24 to 48 hours AFTER surgery before they start to show any signs of improvement. We were also warned that she has a VERY long road to go before she will be hiking Mt. Wilson again or running around LA with her IHD friends.
As it stands now, they are waiting until sometime late tomorrow to pull the ventilator (we hope!) and start bringing her around. They will continue the antibiotics and monitor her in ICU for quite a while until they're sure she's safe. Then I'm sure once she's good, they'll transfer to to a regular room and then home, as they've done before.
So, please please please - keep up the well wishes, light those candles, say those prayers. We're not quite out of the woods but we're beginning to see the light!
Anne

No Jean...
Thankfully Kitz is on a ventilator, and so is heavily sedated in order to let her body recover a bit, and bring up her BP to a manageable level...
So for a least a day or two, she'll be comfortable, thank God....
Darth....
-
Well Crap! This girl has been through way too much. Saying that, she is one of the strongest women I know. Heal quickly Katherine. You are so loved.
-
She is a fighter. I hope her body is resting and healing while she is in ICU. Praying every day for strength and healing. Thanks to KitKatz's family for keeping us updated. :grouphug;
-
Are you kidding? A kinked bowel? That is NOT new medicine. My God it took them how long to discover this Mysterious complication?
OMG!
I would back away when she wakes up to hear this.
:Kit n Stik;
My prayer for Kit is that the Idiots go home and she gets some better care! For God's Sake!
-
Do NOT let them feed her anything but liquids for God Sake for about 2 weeks so she can heal. She doesn't heal very fast so it takes a long time. Nothing but liquids and because the Kitchen down there may not READ Englilsh@!!! you need to be there.
:Kit n Stik;

Fight KIT!!!!! :-*

And cut those trees down, KK is going to need A LOT of BIG STICKS when she gets outta there!

Thank you for keeping us so well informed, Anne. I hope the surgery takes care of the problem and Katherine can now rest and heal. I will continue to send prayers.
-
I'm glad that the doctors finally figured out what the problem was and that it was treatable. I know Kit can get through this.
-
This was so hard to read....
:boxing; :boxing; :boxing;
Fight, fight, fight! Kit, I'm rooting for you! One day at a time, one step at a time.

:cuddle; GEt better and get back here soon, Kit!

Thank goodness they did surgery! I hope that she is better soon.

Mom and I visited with Katherine for a couple hours this evening. We arrived right as she started to wake up and was able to "talk" via a notepad and paper for about an hour or so before going back to sleep again. She's dazed and asking questions about the surgery and what happened but was in good spirits and even joking with us.
She is still on a ventilator while they ween her off the last BP meds and make sure she can breath on her own. Of course, she hates it but understands that it has to stay in. Cross your fingers that it can come out tomorrow and she can be comfortable again.
Anne
(aka - KK's little sister)

crossed my fingers and folded my hands ;D Thanks so much for keeping our nerves down by keeping us updated... :grouphug;

That sounds much better. :grouphug;

Thanks, Anne, for the update. More power to Kitkatz!
-
As Anne mentioned, she was alert and communicating with us with a pen and paper. She still has her humor even with everything that's going on. I swear, she is the most amazing person I know.
We are hoping the ventilator comes out tomorrow so she can be a little more comfortable. Dad and I will be bringing her laptop and stuff to her so hopefully she will be able to log in when she feels better to let you all know how she is doing from her own fingertips.
Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts. You guys are an awesome bunch of people and I know she cares for you.
-
Humor is a good sign :2thumbsup; :yahoo;
I hope they can take her off the ventilator tomorrow. I hated having that in while awake.
Get Well Soon Kitkatz!

:flower; I hope each day is better and better - she is an amazing woman!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

We visited with KK again last night and she was VERY anxious to get the ventilator out. Though her stats had improved all day, she was still on the one med to keep her BP up and she needed to be off of that completely first. There is rumor that the vent could be coming out today....and god forbid when it does because I have a feeling she's going to have a LOT of words to say and they will NOT be nice, if you know what I mean.
Besides the ventilator, she's doing well. Keeps asking us for a Diet Coke and when we tell her no, she flips us off. LOL Victor has promised her that when she gets out, he'll buy her as much diet coke as she wants....and I'm sure she's going to hold him to that one.
Anne
-
I love it!... Flipping people off... Business as usual, then!!!!!!....
Great news!....
Darth....

:yahoo; Good to hear - thanks!

Break out the beer and pompoms, people, because my sister is now minus one ventilator! WOOT WOOT!!!
She has her laptop at the hospital and there is decent wifi so I'm sure once she's feeling up to it you'll see you online either here or FB or both!
Anne

Ok so Mom's fistula had to be declotted today. From what I know, some idiot tech decided to go poking around where he ought not to and tried to screw up her site. It only took 3 hours and they were very gentle with her, according to her own words. She was still in good humor when they wheeled her back in...but she is really high on some awesome painkillers at the moment. They were going to try to dialysis tonight as I was leaving so I am not sure how that went.
We keep updating her with your messages...so please keep good thoughts floating around for her!

I hope she has an arm band on and a sign on her door and above her bed that states do not use so and so arm. I would be mad for her at this idiot.
I am glad she is off the vent and is flying high. I hope she still is in good spirits when they take thatmed away :-[

Katherine Soto I have had food wars going on around the hospital. I called in the morning yesterday to order my lunch.I was told I was on the automatic meal plan already no worried. I told the lady over the phone I have some preferences....never squash on the plate or bell peppers. She tells me fine made a note of it. I had arrived in my new room found a lunch tray I did not order said okay must be the auto tray kicking in. Six thirty slips by and I am asking my nurse when is dinner coming. So she calls down to food place. They forgot to make me a tray. So they tell me forty five minute wait on new tray. There is no choice around here so I wait. So the tray shows up beautiful, except for the huge pile of squash on it. SIGH***

Katherine Soto I had to call the Kaiser operator on the phone to get someone to answer my call bell. I would ring and noone would answer. I ended up with the charge nurse on the floor helping me

Katherine Soto What is going to happen......will she throw the next plate of zucchini that shows upon her meal tray? Will an overdose on a bell pepper case an incident? Will there be no coffee on the tray as requested today, and hot water for tea? Stay tuned to Kaiser and Katherine Kombat.

Good to see you made it through the night. When I left there last night, I was sure you were going to strangle someone. I'm hoping you get better nurses today!

There is a rumor that they could move KK to a care home in the next few days, once she's "medically stable" - their words, not mine. It's not official but they are starting to coordinate everything to make the move "seamless". *snicker snicker snicker* NOTHING happens seamlessly around us.

The hospital wifi went down yesterday. leaving me very bored.
I wish my hospital had wifi.. I'm currently killing my phone data, using the mobile hotspot option..
it is equally boring, however

well, I am GLAD to see you back- even if you get bored!!! :flower; :flower;

:flower; UPDATE! :flower;
It seems that the hospital's wifi doesn't like to work during the day or otherwise KK would be here now, bitching up a storm. Instead, she gave me an earful and I'm now posting it at her request.
So, wanna hear the latest?
1) The staff of the ward she's in now is inept idiots who couldn't find their heads from their "you know where". When she calls to get help with something urgent or asks for pain meds, the person who answers the call over the intercom tells her "Someone will be with you shortly." and then no one shows up for 20-some-odd minutes. Earlier today, a specialist came by to see her and found her sitting in her own feces because the staff ignored her calls for help. He ended up cleaning her up and helping her get changed....and then stepped outside to talk to the staff. A few minutes later, her nurse comes in and tells her, "You know, you need to tell us when you need help." "I DID!!!! You guys IGNORED me!"
2) She's still in a lot of pain. They removed her morphine drip yesterday morning but were not keeping on top of the pain. When I saw her around lunchtime, she was complaining of being in a LOT of pain (a 9 on the pain scale, which means a 12 or 13 for normal people - all three of us as a high pain tolerance) and had been for hours. The meds (Norco) they gave her at 10:30 didn't work at all but the nurse and doctor were determined about not giving her any more IV pain meds. So, they let her sit there in pain for 3 hours, waiting for the Norco to "wear off".
Well, as you can guess, she started throwing fits around 1:30, almost in tears, saying the pain was now a 10 and demanding meds, so the nurse returned with another Norco. We both said, "OH, HELL NO!" at the same time and the nurse looked shocked. "BUt this is all the doctor will prescribe you right now." "Get me the doctor now." "Well, I'll call him but until then, take the Norco." "I'm not taking anything until you talk to the doctor. Norco doesn't do anything for me and you know it! I'm not about to take that med, have you talk to the doctor, get a new med, and then tell me I can't have it until the Norco comes out of my system. I want a new pain med and I want it NOW."
It took then A FULL HOUR to get a hold of the doctor, get a new prescription, have the pharmacy release the meds, get the meds, and then administer it. All in all, she was in severe pain for 4 hours yesterday and ready to MURDER someone.
3) The docs (and probably the nurses of the ward) really want her to be discharged to a care home this afternoon. Now, it's not the care facility that worries up but the fact that they said that my sister's husband (an amputee) would be responsible for taking her to dialysis. That means 3 times a week, he would have to go to the care center, load her into the car, take her to dialysis about a mile or two away, unload her into a wheelchair, and wheel her inside for her treatment...and then do it all in reverse 4 hours later.
We all just stared at the coordinator yesterday - you want us to do WHAT? KK can't get out of bed right now without 3 people seriously helping her. She can barely walk 5 steps without serious fatigue. And you want her to do WHAT? Suuuuurrrrreeeeee..... *sigh* There is talk about getting her on Medi-Cal so her transportation costs could be covered....if she qualifies, that is. We'll have to see....
4) Lastly, I have a funny story for you:
KK was sitting up in her hospital bed, eating lunch, when this perky, short, blonde chick (her words) bounced in with a wheelchair and told her, "Hop in! We're going to dialysis!" KK stared at the crazy lady, wondering if she had the right patient, "What?" "You're Mrs. KK, right? You have dialysis this afternoon. Jump in and I'll take you down there." That's when KK laughed at her and said, "I'm not going ANYWHERE with you, lady." Perky blonde bounced off to talk to the doctor and he called her up a few minutes later, angry at her for denying dialysis, "You haven't had a session since Sunday. You need to go today." That's when KK laid into him, setting him straight about her current condition and where he could stick his little wheelchair. From what I understand, the dialysis machines are up their way up to her room right now....
---------------------------
Personally, I don't know whether to feel bad for the nursing staff or for KK. Please pray for her sanity....and send lots of cards and letters to keep her spirits up. You can PM me or Karol for her address.
Anne

:rant; JEEEZZZZ! :rant;
I hate that she is in pain. She needs to be careful if they are feeding her and giving her pain meds as they will stop up her intestines.
But they need to find a way to keep her comfortable!! (Take 2 vicodyn and 2 stool softeners lol)
I am glad she's able to speak for herself, but no one should ever be left alone at the hospital. They are too busy and the patient will suffer.
I have even called Jenna's doctor's answering service and had him paged when they delay with care for too long.
Please give her a hug from me.
She needs one of my husband's air horns.

"Hop it"????????
Where are they getting their staff from? The story about the lack of response to the call bell reminds me of a story. The daughter of a friend of mine was in the hospital after surgery, and was told not to attempt to use the bathroom by herself but to ring for the staff who would then - presumably - come and help her. Of course, you know what happened. When nature called, she used the call bell as requested...and no one came. Concerned after a bit that she might have an "accident", she simply called 911 and told the operator that she needed to use the bathroom. The 911 operator, looking up where the phone call was coming from, realized that it was the hospital across the street. Needless to say, there were several nurses in her room within minutes ready to assist her....I'm sure the hospital was tremendously embarrassed, but his daughter also did not have that problem again during her hospital stay. This is a true story, btw.
Not that I'm suggesting that you would do such a thing. Ahem. But sometimes drastic situations require drastic solutions.
:sos;
-
I never would have thought of calling 911.. nice touch.. I'm lucky enough that I haven't had to use the call bell here yet, but if I have surgery, I may need to..
I haven't had any trouble with incompetence just yet. Even the doctor who's covering for my family doctor this week is great. I may see if she has her own practice. She's smart, and she has a personality, which I can honestly say that my family doctor does not.
kitz, I wish I had your guts to tell it like it is. I only do that when I'm in extreme pain and just don't care about decorum anymore.
-
"Hop it"????????
"Hop IN."
Now see what happens when I have three cups of coffee in the morning? Utter chaos when I try to type. ;-) Just thankful it was just that one Boo boo!
Anne

drastic measures need drastic actions.... but calling 911? Not somethin I would do because it could be holding p an emergency call (even though it is an emergency, just not that sort of emergency)
-
I've just read back through the pages to try and work out what's been going on. Twisted and busted intestines. Yowsers. My mother in law died of bowel cancer which created holes in her intestines allowing her faeces to leak through her vagina, and being acidic, that was excruciating for her. The doctors and nurses and physios were all using phrases like "medically stable now" and "time to get up!!" and "needs to move to a nursing home". She moved to a nursing home under our great protest (if we hadn't found a place we could bear her to be, they were all set to move her to a shocking looking place just down the road, full of the living dead. Anyway she died two days later in unfamiliar surroundings, and we could see she was dying so I was never sure what they meant by "medically stable" ay.
But KK had her operation on the 15th, right? That's nearly ten days ago. Gregory has had 10 abdominal surgeries and they always get him out of bed within about two days. He insists that he heals faster because of it. He says, it hurts a lot, but if you don't do it it hurts more and for longer. After surgery, most of the hospital staff rapidly become annoying because they want the patient out, and getting out of bed sucks, but KK - can you not get out of bed? If you can't get moving, what's the problem, is there something else going on? Getting up is a good option, much better than remaining stuck in hospital and FAR FAR better than this "moving into a home" business? Plus it will help you poo, and Okarol has pointed out the problem with painkillers and poo. Not that there's that problem yet, by the sounds of it.
I wonder if they want to have done with the IV painkillers to encourage you to get up. Though you can have one of those rolling stand things. Marge's doctors and nurses were obsessed with her getting up. In her case, she was dying, why couldn't they leave her alone? But KK.... you're recovering, aren't you?? Worried about this. Is there a phsyio around who has told you not to get up? Maybe if that's the case, then there's a reason behind it. Maybe I'm leaping to conclusions here and you are getting up. Even transplant patients, even cardio patients get up a day or two after surgery. If you don't get up soon after surgery you start getting complications: chest infections, constipation, deep vein thrombosis.
I think (dodging a barrage of rotten eggs and old tomatos) that you should call for a physio, KK, and regardless of how damned annoying and incompetent (s)he is, get that idiotic person to help you to start getting up. It will hurt like crikey. Keep doing it anyway. Be careful with your blood pressure so don't just jump up without help from the goddamned annoying incompetent physio please.
Please? :bow;
-
What is a physio? Is that like a physical therapist?
I just spoke to Kitkatz and she said it's tough to get up because her abdominal muscles have been cut, so that, plus intense pain and a stoma too, all contribute to making it hard to get up. She needs help, so tonight they should be moving her to a convalescent hospital where she will be recovering.
-
One way to make moving a little easier is to hold a pillow up against your abdomen. It helps stabilize and support the incision and cut muscles. I am surprised that you have not had a physio. (physiotherapist) to help you get moving. Maybe that is something they only do in the UK?
-
I feel so badly for you Kit and wish I could help you. Good that you are telling them like it is, and I bet by now they are ready to have a parade at the door to wave as you leave. That's our girl!!!

They got her moved to the care home around 2 AM this morning and is now settling in.
They came to take her around 8 last night but then realized that they had brought the wrong gurney. DOH! So they tell her, "We'll be back in a few hours with the right one." Lordy lordy lordy....I can't imagine how she "happy" was when they finally came by at 2 AM to move her. We do not like our sleep interrupted, if you know what I mean!
Anne
(kk's little sister)
-
That is one hell of a time to move a patient. Sometimes I do think medical people are brain dead. They tell you to get lots of rest, then they wake you up every half an hour, so you get no sleep at all then you tell you that you should get out of bed more. CRAP!!!! Good luck Kit.
-
Last November I was in ICU and on the doctors' rounds they told me that I could move to a regular ward. I waited and I waited and I waited, and they finally moved me at about 2.30. in the a.m. The nurse on night duty was a real B**** . I tied to help get all my stiuff gathered together and there was a lot as it included my personal scales. I could tell that she didn't want to help me. She had already out my back up trying to treat me as if I was an idiot when she took my BP. So I can understand your frustrations, K .K. Nurses that tick me off, certainly know that they have ticked me off, particularly when they try to Patronize me with their 'superior knowledge'.
-
I hope the care home is up to scratch.
-
grumpy about care homes due to my previous bad experience though it turned out the care at the place we chose, though less specialised, was far more caring and kind. THANK GOD. I hope you find good people in this new spot KK

I hope so too or all hell is going to break loose. KK will do that "exorcist" spin thing will her head a split second before it explodes all over the place. LOL

Thank God for Anniede my sister. She came here this morning, got a hold of the nursing staff supervisor and we started whacking at moles with the big stick. :Kit n Stik; :Kit n Stik;
-
That's what family is for, right, KK? ;)
To summarize -
KK called me at 10:15 last night with a long list of complaints about the care she had received in the less than 20 hours she had been there, which included:
- taking 20 minutes to an hour to respond to a nurse call
- not keeping up with her pain management well and taking 40 minutes to get her meds
- taking 6 freaking hours to change out her wound dressing
- the food they served did not align with what the doctors had told her to eat
- lack of communication between staff, departments, and her so she had no idea what was going on
- not getting the wifi turned on on her computer
She begged me to come over in the morning and bring my baseball bat. (Personally, I wanted to bring the 10 lb sledgehammer out in the garage, but that's just me!)
So, I dragged my mom out of bed at 6:45 so I wouldn't have to bring the kids and trekked on over to her care center to give them hell. After saying hi to KK, I tracked down a nursing supervisor and dragged him back to her room. Poor Russell...he got hit by both barrels but he promised to solve or issues right away.
Not surprisingly, things started happening right after we talked to him. The nutritionist showed up and helped her figure out the food issue. Then 2 different social workers (the care center and her insurance company) both arrived to talk to her, and then PT arrived to set up a time to come and explain what would be going on. All the while, the nurses were being extra attentive to KK and the two other women in her room.
So, In the span of an hour and a half, we got a lot of shit handled and KK was much happier....
Oh, and don't get me started on the transportation driver that took her from the care center to dialysis yesterday. He was a total ass, telling her that since she wasn't in the right wheelchair he couldn't take her, complaining about how long it took to get the right wheelchair and transfer her over, and then grumbling about the oxygen tank that was a bit too unwieldy for him to load and unload.
I got a hold of her cell phone, looked up the transit company's phone number, and gave them an earful about that driver. "I do NOT want him back here EVER. He was rude and unkind to my sister, acting as though he was doing us a favor instead of doing his job, and I won't have that!" Poor girl - I went into her good and she couldn't stop apologizing. We should hear from a manager in the next day or so about that incident.
I have a feeling that I'll be making more early-morning jaunts to the care center to make sure they know that KK is being watched over by a "VERY ATTENTIVE" sister who won't take shit from anyone. ;-)
Of course, I do something nice for my sister and my car decides to pay me back by not starting. *sigh* Stupid Karma owes me one!

I have thrown up all afternoon.
I will let my social media person update you all here. I am a little loopy.
A little loopy?!?!?!?? Oy.... *ducks and runs away*
I just got home from visiting KK and yeah, she spent a good 3 hours puking up everything in her stomach. I'm hoping that she picked up a bug while at Dialysis yesterday but since it had to do with her gastric system, they went ahead and took a few xrays to see if everything was okay. Still waiting for those to be read.
Between the throwing up and the meds and the pain and all that had happened this morning, KK was starting to mentally climb the walls by the time 6:30 PM rolled around so she asked for a anti-anxiety pill. Three requests later, it still hadn't showed up. That's when the nurse finally told us that they had to call the doc and get a RX and y'all know how long THAT takes.
I plan to return early tomorrow morning to check on KK before I head off to my best friend's son's 10th birthday party in the High Desert. I think the more times they see me (the bitchy sister) around, the better her care will get. At least they were keeping up with her meds after our complaint....though the kitchen staff still needs to be smacked around a bit.
Anne
((KK's little sister))
-
:waving; I just Skyped for about 45 minutes with kitkatz - she finally got the anti-anxiety pill at 9:30 PM and she seemed to be ready to sleep now.
She's so grateful for the help her sister and hubby have given her. She worries she is wearing them out. :stressed;
Tomorrow she will hopefully have a smaller oxygen tank, and street clothes to wear when they transport her to dialysis.
I don't know what time she has D but I know she'd appreciate company if anyone wants to Skype tomorrow.
:P I hope this stomach stuff is done with, poor girl. Good news is her temperature went back to normal.
I love the bitchy sister!! :boxing;
-
Can I borrow your sister when my time comes Kit??? Hoe you are feeling at least a little bit better today.
-
I'm glad to see what you are posting. It shows people how much can actually be accomplished if you and/or your family/patient advocate speak up. This is so important. Kudos to you all.
Kitkatz, get better and get back home.

:flower; UPDATE :flower;
The Care Center sent KK back to the ER this morning. Seems that her nausea and puking didn't stop through out the night so around midnight they made the decision to send her back in and get her re-evaluated. I tracked her down this morning around 6 AM and she was still in the ER and getting ready to go down to do a CAT scan. Her husband is with her now - I don't think he's seen his bed in the last 24 hours, poor guy - and I hope to be kept updated once they figure out what's up with her.
Cross your fingers and pray that its just a stomach bug. KK doesn't need any more craziness in her life right now....
Anne

Can I borrow your sister when my time comes Kit???
My motto is "Mess with my family, you mess with ME!" LOL And this is just my sister - you ought to see me when someone messes with my kids. Mama Bear comes out and she is NOT happy!
I'm not a total bitch when dealing with the staff. I'm nice and respectful but am quite clear about what sort of care I want my sister to have. And most importantly, I try to talk to the right people (aka - supervisors and managers that can do something), write down names and departments, go out of my way to thank people for their time and help, and follow up as much as I can to ensure these things are handled.
I also try to stand between KK and the staff so they don't have to take the full brunt of "I haven't had my meds and they've F'ed up my food for the 10th time and I'm PISSED!" dragon lady. I'm like her - I get VERY grumpy when I'm in pain and can go from 0 to bitchy in 10.2 seconds, especially if someone is being stupid around me - so I don't take whatever she says personally. I know it's just the pain talking. ;-)
Anne
((KK's (bitchy) little sister ;) ))

I'm with you, Anne....

Just had a text from my pet dragon....
Panic over(ish!)... She has a faulty enzyme in her pancreas causing the vomiting... They should be able to get on top of it...
She's also going to a new place for rehab... Needs a change of scene... Hopefully, this one will be up to a better standard!...
Love to all...
Darth....
-
wow, Kitz.. you're totally going through the mill. hope things start looking up for you soon.
Anne, I could sure use you when I have to go to my transplant hospital in Nova Scotia. Over there I'm a non-compliant, attention seeking, trouble maker, even though in reality, I'm none of those things. They treat me like crap, and I'm usually on my own with no family nearby. I'm the kind of person who cries when they get angry, and it makes it hard to articulate to anyone what I'm trying to say, because I can't yell through the sobs. I really need someone who can speak for me. I have called my mom before, who's called the nurse's station back, long distance, to yell at them for me.
-
:flower; UPDATE :flower;
Well, it seems that they are admitting our little troublemaker for the night so they can do dialysis and keep an eye on her condition, with hope of shipping her off to a new place tomorrow (maybe?).
They're officially calling it "pancreatitis". As I tell people, "When KK gets sick, she gets SICK." Oy....
Anne
(KK's little sis)
-
The little troublemaker and her bitchy sister! :rofl;
-
Anne, just a thought as you're trying to deal with step-down care....
Would the insurance company be interested in providing some home care for our Kitz instead of a nursing home placement???... It would be far cheaper for them, Kitz would be saved from a home (and if I'm honest, the home saved from Kitz!)... LOL!!!!!....
Someone coming in a few times in the day to help with personal care, and perhaps preparing a meal, a physio coming in to get her mobile, and perhaps a nurse visit here and there, and most of all, our Kitz recovering in the comfort and privacy of her own home could be worth looking into....
Just a thought!....
Darth...
-
They're officially calling it "pancreatitis".
That's what I had.. was caused by gallstones blocking the ducts... painful, OMG.. I've never felt such pain.. I wasn't puking, or anything like that, though
-
I know angels walk among us. I have had five or more helping me since arriving in ER last night. anyone who has seen my veins now I am an almost impossible stick. Average Pokes for an IV are 3, They sent my ER nurse down to ct scan to place Iv. she walked in, gave me pain meds she then proceeded to put n an iv ------IN ONE TRY! THANKS ANGEL.
-
Good nurses are worth their weight in gold! I'm so glad you're well enough to post, Kit. If there's anything I hate in this world, it's nausea and vomiting, and being in pain just makes it that much worse.
Get well soon!

Kitkatz wanted me to pass on her Skype name: kitkatz2 and asks that if anyone wants they can call her on there.
Though I will warn you - the meds are still making her little loopy and more apt to fall asleep on you and talk in her sleep - yes, even answer the phone and have a full conversation....
So, if you do call her make sure you ask her for her special talking password for IHD.com people - Ming. That way, you can make sure you have Kitkatz and not her sleeping persona.

:flower; update :flower;
The last few days has been a bit crazy....literally. Katherine has been having some wild mood swings, along with a lot of anxiety attacks, talking to people in her sleep, and repeating words, sentences, and complete conversations with us and the nursing staff at the hospital. All day Sunday, she complained of being really really tired and would start to fall asleep every 5 minutes or so. She begged us to keep her awake....and then would yell and curse at us for waking her up. She was so wild and out of it last night that when mom and I left the hospital, we had the consensus that KK was "bat-shit crazy". ((Lovely medical term, huh? Just remember, KK< if you read this later, we all do love you lots!!!))
This afternoon, after a long discussion about her reactions and mental state with her husband and her, the doctor decided that it was the morphine and administered an anti-morphine shot to start counteracting the drug's bad reaction. She immediately started to perk up, finding the energy to stay awake, and talk with her husband. Though she was acting a little more like herself, he said that she was still very confused and weak.
Just now, Victor called me with the disheartening news that KK had become unresponsive again this evening and they were in the process of transferring her back to ICU. As of right now, no one knows what caused it and I have a feeling we won't know until morning - their hospital seems to like to keep people in ICU stable for the night and then delve into reasons and diagnoses during the daylight.
Please keep KK in your prayers tonight and over the next couple of days. I think we're going to need all you can give right now.
Anne
((KK's little sis))

Oh poor Kitz!....

:flower; UPDATE :flower;
KK was placed back on the ventilator at 4 AM this morning.
*insert a lot of curse words here*
No one knows why she's having this sudden regression - she was doing so well and then she slid back, losing everything she's achieved in the last 2 weeks. Tests are continuing...
Once she heard the news this morning, mom said, "I think she's given up." I really hope she's wrong. KK is a strong-willed woman....but a body can only take so much abuse.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. *sigh*

Now that I am on the internet and caught up, I have no words. Just utter shock!
-
:'( Please get better Kit, we have so much still to explore...
-
Wishing you well kitkatz, keeping fighting , my prayers are with you and your loved ones.
-
My thoughts are with you, Kit. Please find the fight to get through this. Please.
-
:pray; praying hard for you KK. Please get better.
-
I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope it's just a temporary setback.

Yesterday they started a feeding pump as Kitkatz was in deep sedation on the ventilator. She has 4 IV's and a stoma.
They took 3 liters of fluid during dialysis. Her blood pressure remained good during treatment.
Her hubby Victor said tonight that they are slowly decreasing the sedation and she's aware more, and awake for short periods.
She is frustrated that she cannot communicate. She tried to write but he said it was too hard to make out the writing.
After some time he was able to decipher what she wrote, and figured out that she was cold.
He got her a sheet and extra blanket and she went back to sleep.
Victor is staying with her all day.
I tried to drive out there tonight but traffic was so bad that I will try again tomorrow.
Cards and notes are appreciated, I'm sure.
-
Thanks a million for the update, Karol...
Fingers, toes, legs and eyes staying firmly crossed for our KItz....
Love to all...
Darth...
-
I so hope she is better soon.
-
I JUST saw this,
i cant believe ive missed all of this.
You all are in my thoughts.
-
Kitkatz is always the one in our corner when the proverbial excrement hits the rotating blades. Am keeping her in my thoughts, and Victor best keep her stick shined up so she can wield it when she's feeling better
lots of love to Kitz and her family at this time and praying for a full recovery
-
My prayers go out to her; may God be with her and help her thought these difficult times. :o
-
In prayer for KitKatz. May the Good Lord provide healing and recovery.

:flower; UPDATE!!!! :flower;
Victor's update included some good news (FINALLY!).
KK is awake, ventilator-less, and talking today. WOOT WOOT WOOT!!!
This is a far cry from last night where she kept her eyes closed most of the time, barely answered yes/no questions, and was still on the ventilator.
Anne
(KK's little sister)

Very good news - Keep it up KitKatz !!!

Small good news is good. Let's keep that coming.
-
Good!
-
we must keep sending the healing vibes her way.. I'm glad she's off the ventilator.. that's always a good sign
-
I am sitting in the hospital parking lot and had to post a message. I just left kitkatz and Victor and everything is so much better than it was yesterday. I spent 2 hours here and kitkatz was as aware and alert as I have ever seen her, and able to tell me what's been going on. I honestly was surprised to see her doing so well. The best news is that she is not in pain, and she's no longer on pain medications. They hope to move her from ICU if all goes well, so she may be in a regular room by tomorrow.
She had her feisty spirit and sense of humor. She said the Grim Reaper took two swipes at her but she told him "No, this is not my time."
Poppy, she said the card you sent was beautiful.
Darth, she said she's not dead yet. She's going to get you, and your little dog too.
Keep sending her good mojo! I think it's working. :yahoo;
-
This is good news!
-
Ahhhhhh what a relief. Hope it is clear sailing from here on in!!
-
Thanks Karol.... Yes, I got an 'interesting' text from the site's favourite battle-axe this morning!!!... I wish her luck 'getting' the dog... I've been trying for years!!!... LOL!!!!!....
Drat!... And I was on commission with the undertaker!... LOL!.....
Love you, Kitz....
Love to all...

you mean, kinda like a playoff beard? I kinda have one of those, but it's mostly cuz they won't let me have scissors, and standing at the sink in the bathroom is actually a little painful for me at the moment

It hurts to read this. We all want her to be better. I hate that she is back on the ventilator. Maybe she can feel all our love and prayers and can fight a little more. Please Dear Lord, watch over our friend and hold her in the palm of your hand.
Hear hear.

Hell hath no fury like Victor and I dealing with a pushy bueareuucrat paper pusher n the phone today. 3pm. call; we are discharging nyou. Like hell you are. Iwill discuss this withe doctor. She was an insistent paper usher and could not get the story straight. I said I wll be discharged when the doctor and I have agreed together tp discharge me home. with home health care and cna help and equipment.Needless to say i paged the doctor and pitched a helllacious fit. I had the wound care nurse telling her I was not medically fit to go. Doctor said an error had been made.
-
Ahhh, the squeaky wheel!!! Kit, you and Victor just keep giving them fits. Sometimes the incompetence amazes me.
