Title: Burning Feet Syndrome
Post by: Hazmat35 on May 17, 2013, 07:14:20 AM
Hello, has anyone ever dealt w/ this before, caused from CKD!!!!!  I just started experiencing smyptoms from this....!  :sos;  ???

A burning sensation in your feet may be caused by nerve damage in the legs, also called neuropathy. Although many medical conditions can cause burning feet, diabetes is the most common. Most burning feet treatments focus on preventing further nerve damage and reducing pain.

Causes of Burning Feet
Most often, neuropathy, or nerve damage, is the cause of burning feet. Damaged nerve fibers are more likely to become overactive and misfire. The damaged nerves send inappropriate pain signals to the brain, although there is no wound or injury.

In most people with neuropathy, the leg nerves tend to become damaged first, at their furthest ends in the feet. These people often have tingling and numbness in the feet as well.

Diabetes is by far the most common cause of neuropathy in the legs. Many other conditions can cause neuropathy with a burning sensation in the feet:

Chronic kidney disease (uremia)
Vitamin deficiency (vitamin B12 and occasionally vitamin B6)
Alcohol abuse
Low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism)
Lyme disease
HIV/AIDS
Amyloid polyneuropathy
Drug side effects, including chemotherapy drugs, vitamin B6 overdose, HIV medicines, isoniazid, amiodarone, metformin, and  others
Heavy metal poisoning (lead, mercury, arsenic)
Vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels)
Sarcoidosis
Guillain-Barre syndrome
Arterial disease
Edema or fluid retention
Hypertension

Yes, I have burning feet, expecially noticeable at nighttime.  I've had it for several years but have never mentioned it because I just figured that it was just another CKD thing to deal with.

My husband bought me a flat, quilted looking freezable pack that I wrap in a towel and place on the bed at night.  I rest my feet on it while I indulge in my nighttime reading.  My feet finally cool down enough so that I can fall asleep.

I know I don't have any of the other conditions you've listed bar one...hypothyroidism.

I got my thyroid checked several years ago, and it was OK, but I can't remember if my burning feet started before or after that test.  Interestingly, at my tx neph appt last week, I mentioned that I was having trouble with fatigue.  Nothing in my labs pointed to any reason for that, but my neph did suggest that I have my thyroid checked.  So, maybe hypothyroidism is the villain of the piece.  I've requested a lab order, so once I have that test done, maybe I'll know more.

Thanks for this post, Hazmat.  I never realized that low thyroid might be making my feet burn!

Glad to help!  If even ONE person can get some relief, I've done my job!   :yahoo;  Hope that it does help.

Seems that I've been somewhat of a TEST SUBJECT for my Nurses at the clinic.  Everytime I ask them questions about something or have "symptoms" of something, they usually answer with " I've never heard of that before ".  . . . . But when I start talking to other patients, they always say "yeah, I've had that; or yes, that has happened to me; Yes, I feel the same way"....makes me wonder that my fellow Dialysis patients, aren't fessing up to their actualy symptoms and aches and pains.

I recently joined the 'burning feet' club. I had already booked an appointment with a podiatrist and both he, and subsequently my GP, identified the condition as peripheral neurapthy of the feet. Renal failure is the cause.

My GP prescribed Lyrica (pregabalin). He started me on 25 mg daily and said we may need to raise the dosage to 75 mg. However the lower dose has done the trick. The burning has gone!!! :bandance; :clap; :bandance;

Thre is also the most marvellous side effect. I take the capsule after my evening meal, and am now enjoying the best sleeps I have had in 40 years. Bloody marvelous!!!!!!!!!!
