Title: Looking for units in New Jersey and New York
Post by: Riki on February 10, 2013, 12:31:06 PM
I'll be doing a bit of traveling in the next year, first to New York City, and then again to Morristown, NJ.  The New York trip is strictly a pleasure trip, to visit with my friend, Kelly.  i have a unit that I go to, but it's on the lower east side of Manhattan, and where i stay and where Kelly lives is on the upper west side, so I was kind of hoping to find a unit closer.  The other trip is to get my guide dog and train with him/her.  None of that has been put into motion yet, but I was trying to be proactive and look into units there.  Information is not easy to find online, and the one bit of info that I want, if the unit takes travelers, is never listed.  i was wondering if maybe anyone who lives in those areas might be able to point me in another direction to find the information I'm looking for.  There has to be more than one unit in Manhattan that accepts traveling patients.  The last time I was there, there was a couple in from Japan.  The wife, who was the patient, didn't speak a word of English, and the husband had to translate.

Your clinic should be able to assist you with this request.  Tell your nurse that you need to make a travel request and give them at least a month's notice.  Have the dates you'll be traveling, the address(es) where you'll be staying, and any other relevant information.  They will try to find a location in the area for you.

I've done this for my father a number of times and it has never been a problem.

Good luck!

I've done this before.. I have to find the places first, and then they find out if I'm welcome there.. I haven't got any dates yet, for either trip.. we don't have a travel coordinator, so I have to do most of the leg work myself

I have no problem finding the centres.. it's finding information on them that's the hard part.  A lot of centres won't take traveling patients, and the particular site you have has no information at all, just where they are

Hi Riki, I live in Manhattan and while there are many centers here, most have a long wait list just for new or transferring patients.  This I believe is the reason why many don't bother with travelers because it becomes a scheduling nightmare when the units are already filled to capacity.

Rogosin Institute has been building a new facility on Riverside Drive, but I don't know if they have completed construction as of yet. I will try calling a couple of nurses and social workers I know in the area tomorrow to see if there are any options available for you.

I usually go to the Lower Manhattan Dialysis Center on 34th Street, but it's so far away from where we stay, and since I'm usually on the third shift while there, trying to find a cab at 5pm is a nightmare.  It's why I thought that maybe if I could get into another unit closer to where I stay, maybe it won't be such a pain in the butt to get there.

The last time I was down, I stayed in Newark, and one night I had quite the trek.. we managed to get a cab to Penn Station at 10:30pm.. then got on the train to Newark.. I had a hell of a time just staying awake on the train.. then, we called a car service when we got to Newark, and they just weren't coming and weren't coming, so we decided to walk to the hotel.. it was only 2 blocks, but after 4 hours on D, it felt like I was walking back home to PEI, and not 2 blocks to the hotel..

Hey Riki,  I don't have much to report back.  Basically I got the same answers that were given here, to use the internet to find units near your visit locations or to try the travel coordinators at Davita and Fresenius.  Good luck with your trip.

I think we're planning on New York in May.  We're usually there during Fleet Week (I do love the sailors. *L*).  I'll probably start bugging the social worker about it around the end of March.  I imagine that I'll be going back to where I went before, it's just a rip roaring pain in the backside to get there and back to the Upper West Side.

I'm going to email the school in Morristown, NJ about dialysis units in the area, as I'm sure they've had students on dialysis before

Have you called or emailed the travel coordinator? They will know locations and services provided.
