Title: a rough time frame
Post by: raidym on February 04, 2013, 03:22:39 PM
Hey everybody hope your keeping well, I'm doing good. Just have a few questions and hoping I'll get some answers. My sister is going to donate a kidney to me which I'm blown away by and so greatful I don't think she knows how greatful I am. She has gone through some test and now has to get in touch with the psychologist. I was just wondering whats after that is there many tests. I'm just wondering is there long left to when it happens. Starting to feel nervous now and extremly guilty that she's to through this. I know nobody can say exactly how long its gonna take. But a rough time frame would be good and opinions would be great too.

Rough time frame. My mother completed everything in about a month because I was getting worse fast. Then another month til the operation. Depends on your condition. Could be a couple months if they don't need to fit her into testing but just give her the regular next slot. Could be a long time if there's a problem with any of her results.

I heard my nephrologist telling someone one day that the average time frame was 3-6 months

Once all the testing is done I think it depends on the hospital/surgeons. I know with our donation they asked us when we wanted to go ahead and went with that, but for various reasons we didn't want it done immediately so it was easier for them. We suggested the date and they agreed and it was fourteen months from my initial appointment with the coordinator to the operation (we had to figure in weight loss and work).  I think Riki's thoughts of 3-6 months would fit in with the UK system too, but actually setting a date will depend on what works for the two of you, your support networks and the surgeons.

What tests has she already had?  The testing for us in the UK is a tad different and I'm pretty sure the psychologist was one of my final appointments, but I imagine it didn't have to be.

Yay! for your sister!

I'm in Ireland so I can't imagaine the procedure would be too different to the U.K. I just wasn't sure if th phsycologist was last on the list.. She's had bloods, two urine colletions, cardiogram and not sure what else. My both sisters got tested one was a one in six and the other was four in six so she went ahead. So it doesn't seem too gar away maybe in the next few months if everything runs smoothly. Oh the nerves, thanks for the replies guys..xxx
