I am doing incenter Nocturnal HD for 8 hours. I am also needing Cataract Eye Surgery. Anything I should know?
I would have the surgery on a off day hopefully but then what about heparin the next dialysis session?
Anyone been through this?
:waiting;

I had cataract surgery, but I wasn't on D at the time, in fact, it was less than a year after my last transplant. I'm not sure what they cut, so this would be a good question to ask your ophthalmologist about

Laurie is also having cataract surgery in the near future . He is on warfarin which he needs to stop a week prior to surgery but we were told heparin will not be a problem . He was scheduled to have it done in December but had to postpone as he was in hospital with other issues but his eye specialist was doing it early in the morning same day as dialysis . The main hurdle we were facing was the fact Laurie only has one eye and you have to keep the cataract eye covered for 24 hours after surgery . We have spoken to quite a few people who have had it done and they all say it is great , almost instantaneous results . His cousin said she saw colours she didn't know existed . Laurie is looking forward to getting it done as he can barely see at all . Good luck , let us know how you go .

Thank you for responding. Let me know how Laurie does. I too only have one "good" eye so they are hesitant to do it.

.I. had cataracts removed from both eyes in Oct. each eye a week a part. The worst thing about it was not being able to eat for 6 hrs before hand and the month of eye drops 3 times a day. I had them removed on a dialysis day. I do M W F and Mon was the only day unless I waited 3 mos. The surgery only took about 7 min I did not have to keep the eye covered. As soon as the dilation was back to normal I could see. Passed the eye test and I don't have to wear glasses to drive. good luck you'll be glad you did.

I have a cataract on the other eye, but I haven't decided on whether or not to have it removed. The other eye still doesn't work right. The surgery was successful, but the muscle in the eye doesn't work as well as it did before, and I now have a lazy eye. It's harder to focus both eyes now and I sometimes see double. I'm not sure if I want to risk the same thing happening to the other eye, especially since I'm eventually going to be totally blind anyway

Greg recently had both his done but it was done with laser surgery so no real cutting. I frankly didn't even think of dialysis impacting it other than I think his eyes "change" depending on his fluid levels.
We had mentioned it to his neph and his nurse prior to and nobody blinked an eye - so to speak - about it.

The two cataract surgeries I had both required an appointment the next day with the opthalmologist for post op follow up to check on the eye. When you have the surgery you will have an eye shield that maybe clear plastic or metal, but you will need someone to drive you home that day. Next day you will be fine and after seeing the doctor you will be allowed to have the shield off during the day, but must have it on while sleeping. There will be a variety of eye drops to put in 4x a day and as time goes on, times a day will decrease, medication drops will be discontinued, to finally none. Then your cleared to get new glasses. Of course the doctor will go over your meds and some may need to be stopped a week prior to surgery and or on the day of. It usually is aspirin, bp, pain meds.
Just be prepared for possible setbacks that can happen such as an infection starting, but that's rare.
Good Luck Rerun
